Cosmology and Geography

A Wuji World

  • The Immortal Realm belongs to the rare class of Wuji worlds, which have produced Wuji-level beings. Its immense origin makes it a coveted target for powerful beings in Chaos 388 460.
  • It has produced multiple native Wuji existences and a transcendent. Merchant Venerable Juntian considers this exceptional, judging its inherent potential merely above average among Wuji worlds 528.
  • Its creator gathered numerous Chaos Supreme Treasures while establishing the world 495.
  • An entrance to Chaos lies within the Thirty-Three Layers of Heaven. The Devil Ancestor identifies this connection as the realm’s weakest point 476.

Domains and Notable Locations

The upper realm’s fragmented landscape includes inhabited immortal domains, devil-controlled territories, and ruins with damaged natural laws 194.

Government and Major Powers

Heavenly Court

The Heavenly Emperor’s authority derives from his position as the Dao Ancestor’s direct disciple and the Immortal Ancestor’s inheritor. His duties include maintaining the Heavenly Dao’s balance and suppressing the Devil Ancestor; this authority also burdens him with the realm’s karma and expectations 388 505.

  • Haotian eventually retires from the throne and travels Chaos as a rogue cultivator. A new Heavenly Emperor succeeds him, though the succession notice does not name the replacement 603.
  • The Heavenly Court coordinates military defense, territorial grants, and cooperation among major powers. Agreements with Han Xuanji’s disciples include intelligence sharing, resource allocation, and rewards for merit against the Devil Race 460.
  • Following the realm’s restoration, the Heavenly Emperor permits Devil Race members to enter immortal domains if they abandon the Devil Ancestor, sincerely pursue the Dao, and have neither participated in the war nor shed the blood of the realm’s inhabitants. Officials are assigned to screen applicants 556.

Other Major Powers

Power Position in the Realm
Mystic Heaven Dao Palace Han Xuanji’s cultivation sanctuary and a major source of rising experts. Its later control of defeated Chaos factions makes it the dominant power in Chaos 572 594.
Spirit Void Heavenly Palace Ruling power of the Spirit Void Immortal Domain and an overseer of lower realms. It later becomes one of the Immortal Realm’s foremost sects 194 248 621.
Human Emperor Palace Ancient human inheritance ground, reputedly founded by the first Human Emperor. The Human Emperor gathers human fortune and acts as the race’s savior rather than merely ruling one dynasty 303.
Sacred and Divine Dynasties Fortune-based states whose strength can rival top sects. The Spirit Void Immortal Domain contains ancient sacred dynasties controlled by the Jiang and Li lineages 303.
Demon Court Strengthened by demons arriving from across the immortal domains. Its internal struggle for territory and resources turns human lands into a target for expansion 279.
Devil Race A long-standing enemy operating through devil domains, infiltrated factions, and the Devil Ancestor’s ancient subordinates 194 350 371.

Ascension and Cultivation

Arrival from the Lower Realms

  • Cultivators reach the Immortal Ascension Realm before ascending from the Spirit Realm. Some delay the Immortal Ascension Tribulation to strengthen their foundations or retain their privileged position below 104.
  • Ascension can mean falling from the summit of a lower realm to the bottom of the upper realm’s hierarchy—even becoming an ordinary heavenly soldier 104.
  • Newly ascended cultivators encounter sect recruiters and military representatives. Some possess upper-realm backers, making mistreatment by recruiting envoys dangerous 183 279.
  • Upper-realm powers can oversee lower realms. Spirit Void Heavenly Palace disciples explicitly invoke that jurisdiction when resisting a demon immortal’s attack 248.

Immortal Cultivation Hierarchy

These are cultivation ranks practiced within the realm, not stages of the world itself.

Realm Defining Attainment / Standing
Earth Immortal Requires the complete conversion of spiritual power into immortal power, an immortal physique, and an immortal soul 119.
Heavenly Immortal Attained by a perfected Earth Immortal who condenses a personal Heavenly Immortal Principle 183.
True Immortal Requires completing the Heavenly Immortal Principle and comprehending a personal True Immortal Principle through insight into the Great Daos 183.
Mystic Immortal The cultivator’s Principle begins transforming into the more primordial Dao. Mystic Immortals count among a major sect’s core forces 183.
Golden Immortal Possesses a Golden Immortal Dao Fruit and initial mastery of the Great Dao; a regional hegemon known as an Immortal Lord 183.
Taiyi Golden Immortal Follows Golden Immortal in the hierarchy recorded by the Primordial Immortal Instruction 183.
Daluo Golden Immortal Associated with Immortal King Artifacts; the Myriad Phenomena Sacred Canon provides a cultivation path to this realm 191.
Hunyuan Taiji Held by several ancient Heavenly Court experts 437.
Hunyuan Wuji The level attained by Han Xuanji upon becoming the Mystic Heaven Dao Venerable; such experts can decisively affect the realm’s survival 415 437.
  • Immortal Realm cultivators generally emphasize their own cultivation and comprehension of Dao principles, rather than the external methods later encountered on the Eternal Continent 646.
  • The realm’s documented artifact hierarchy runs from low-, mid-, high-, and supreme-grade Immortal Artifacts through Immortal King Artifacts, Immortal Emperor Artifacts, and Great Dao Sacred Artifacts 191.

History

Creation and Ancient Disorder

Pan, the Immortal Ancestor, created the Immortal Realm to nurture companions who might help break the shackles of Chaos and produce true transcendents. During its creation, the Lord of Myriad Voids ambushed him, but was defeated and imprisoned at the bottom of Reincarnation Purgatory. Much of the prisoner’s power was subsequently used to sustain reincarnation 495 566 567 568.

During the Immortal Ancestor’s absence, the realm endured warfare among primordial powers. Shaman Gods shattered mountains and rivers, Star Gods manipulated mortal destinies, netherworld spirits devoured souls, and invading Chaos beings seized territories. The Dao Ancestor rose amid this disorder and established order in the world 493 505.

Ancient War and Fragmentation

A chronicle studied by Han Xuanji describes the Heavenly Court’s former rule over the Great Luo Heaven Domain and a devastating war involving a devil god and the Devil Ancestor. It records the Heavenly Emperor and Devil Ancestor as seemingly perishing, while the Immortal Realm and Tenfold Devil Realm were shattered 193.

The resulting landscape contained countless domains. Relatively intact regions became immortal domains, while devil-tainted fragments became devil domains. The worst battlefields survived as hazardous ruins with broken space and distorted Principles 194.

Renewed Devil Threats

The Devil Race gradually infiltrated powers within the Spirit Void Immortal Domain and prepared for renewed conquest. The awakening of the Nine Lives Imperial Lord signaled a more aggressive phase, including orders to eliminate an unidentified “variable” in the realm 350 371.

Han Xuanji’s defeat of the Great Heavenly Devil’s incarnation revealed his Hunyuan Wuji strength to the Heavenly Court’s ancient experts. They agreed to observe him without provoking him 437.

Lord of Greed’s Invasion

The Devil Ancestor recruited the Lord of Greed by offering a share of the Immortal Realm’s origin. Border defenders from the Heavenly Court and multiple races faced the resulting invasion, with reclusive experts helping repel an early assault 460 477 479.

The Lord of Greed later demanded half the realm’s origin and sent fiends through a Chaos rift. His true body forcibly tore open the sky and entered the realm; his influence could disturb living beings’ minds and upset the Heavenly Dao’s balance 482 483 484.

Reincarnation Crisis

The Devil Ancestor exploited unrest around the Nether Sea to accelerate the theft of reincarnation authority. He also released the Lord of Myriad Voids, whose spreading power of nothingness threatened reincarnation throughout the Immortal Realm and its lower realms 507 514.

While the Heavenly Emperor, Nether Lord, and Underworld forces attempted to stabilize reincarnation, Han Xuanji entered Reincarnation Purgatory alone to confront the imprisoned being 514.

Restoration and the Immortal Ancestor’s Return

The Heavenly Emperor later restored the desolate domains and reorganized the realm into twenty-eight Immortal Domains. Some Devil Race members surrendered, while others went into hiding 556.

Han Xuanji rescued the Immortal Ancestor from confinement at the end of spacetime and brought him home. Over the following thousand years, the Immortal Ancestor secretly nourished the realm’s origin, increasing its fortune, Spiritual Qi, and Dao resonance. Numerous cultivators broke through long-standing bottlenecks, and the immortal domains began expanding 566 567 570 572.

Immortal-Exterminating Alliance

The Devil Ancestor spread claims that Han Xuanji held the Dao Ancestor’s secret of transcendence, drawing hostile Chaos factions toward both him and the Immortal Realm 533.

The resulting Immortal-Exterminating Alliance included Merchant Venerable Juntian, the Star Ancestor, the Dragon Ancestor, and the Soul Race. The Heavenly Emperor established three defensive lines beyond the realm and recalled experts traveling through Chaos 572.

Han Xuanji defeated the alliance, and the Immortal Ancestor’s public appearance confirmed his return. A victory banquet at High Heaven Hall celebrated the realm’s safety and opened discussion of its future 585.

Supremacy and Later Prosperity

Control of the Myriad Worlds Merchant Alliance, Chaos Dragon Nest, and Chaos Star Realm made the Immortal Realm—or more precisely, the Mystic Heaven Dao Palace—the sole hegemon of Chaos. The Soul Race also publicly acknowledged Han Xuanji as its master 594.

Returning Dao Venerables established new lineages, Haotian relinquished the throne, and sects flourished throughout the immortal domains. When Han Xuanji later returned to Chaos, Li Taiqing reported that the realm had remained peaceful and continued growing stronger; the Immortal Ancestor and Supreme Dao Venerable had prevented ancient experts from investigating Han Xuanji’s transcendence 603 621 808.

Simulated Futures

The following events occur in Han Xuanji’s simulations and are not established history.

Simulation Fate of the Immortal Realm
Su Ming The Nether Lord’s attempt to seize reincarnation authority fails to balance life and death. Reincarnation collapses, the dead cannot be reborn, and the living begin losing their soul flames 375.
Lin Feng After Su Ming sacrifices himself by merging with reincarnation, the realm restarts. Lin Feng teaches its newborn beings, becomes Heavenly Emperor, and guides a revival before the Chaos Dao Devil attacks 394.
Lin Feng: defense against the Chaos Dao Devil Lin Feng remains the Heavenly Dao’s spokesperson rather than the world’s master. He combines the wishes of living beings with Heavenly Dao Origin purple qi to form an immense Heavenly Emperor Dharma body 395.
Yun Wuji A Chaos invasion leaves half the realm shattered. Recovery brings renewed prosperity, but the awakening of the Forbidden Lord of Darkness and Primordial Lord of Tribulation later threatens it with destruction 545 546 547.
