Cosmology

  • A universe within a leaf: Chaos is not the entirety of existence. It is a primordial world born on the Tree of Eternity, one of many such worlds beyond which lies the Primordial Sea 568 595.
  • Shared origin of world and inhabitants: According to the Immortal Ancestor, Chaos’s primordial beings arose from a drop of Water of Eternity nurtured by the tree, sharing an origin with Chaos itself 568.
  • The Tree of Eternity: Han Xuanji sees countless world leaves surrounding the tree. Worlds and their inhabitants receive nourishment from it while feeding information back to it 522.
  • The Other Shore: The Eternal Continent lies beyond Chaos and is also called the Other Shore. Soul Ancestor identifies it as her original homeland 595.
  • Relative scale: An Eternal True God can destroy an entire Chaos with a wave of the hand, illustrating the gulf between Chaos’s native powers and higher cultivation realms 596.

Environment and Travel

  • Unfixed laws: Unlike the Immortal Realm, the open expanses of Chaos lack fixed laws of heaven and earth. In Lin Feng’s simulation, even a Taiyi Golden Immortal would struggle to travel there, while his Chaos Physique makes the environment especially suitable for him 392.
  • Immense distances: Crossing Chaos takes substantial time even for Hunyuan cultivators. Exploring its entirety is a daunting undertaking even for Hunyuan Wuji experts 534.
  • Chaos tides: Turbulent currents fill its depths. Some sleeping Chaos Devil Gods are as large as worlds, and their breathing stirs the surrounding tides 522 528.
  • Predatory creatures: Strange beings swim through Chaos’s currents, preying on weak world bubbles and creatures that have lost their way 522.
  • World-devouring threats: Chaos Devil Gods, Heavenly Devils, and other ancient beings can consume world origins or leave shattered Heavenly Daos behind them 324 411 459.
  • Cultivation opportunities: Lu Fan trains in a human territory within Chaos among human prodigies and returns to the Immortal Realm stronger than before 382.

Laws, Origins, and Transcendence

Chaos Origin and the Great Daos

  • Chaos Ultimate Principles form Chaos’s fundamental structure. The three thousand Great Daos derive from these underlying Principles 548.
  • Chaos Origin Power is the foundational power constituting Chaos, encompassing ultimate Principles such as creation and destruction. Under ordinary circumstances, it cannot be extracted without destroying Chaos 548.
  • Chaos Qi carries Dao resonance capable of giving birth to all things. It is more powerful than Innate Qi; the exceptional Chaos Qi examined by Han Xuanji’s disciples is difficult for ordinary cultivators even to sense 378.
  • A cultivator attaining Hunyuan Wuji establishes a Great Dao that becomes one of Chaos’s cornerstones. Han Xuanji’s breakthrough changes the Great Dao’s resonance and is sensed by powerful beings throughout Chaos 415.

Chaos Eras

  • Each restart of Chaos marks a Chaos Era 550.
  • Only beings who reach Hunyuan Wuji can survive such a restart. Not every Chaos Devil God reaches that realm, making surviving primordial Devil Gods especially rare 550.
  • The Immortal Ancestor establishes the Immortal Realm during the current Chaos Era 550.

Transcendence

Transcendence means escaping Chaos’s bonds, not automatically entering a higher cultivation realm 581.

  • Primordial attachment: Native primordial beings are bound to Chaos through their shared origin. They struggled to transcend even before Chaos Will emerged 568.
  • Attempted methods: Ancient experts created worlds and nurtured younger cultivators, or reincarnated into mortal bodies to escape their original connection to Chaos 568.
  • Chaos Will’s interference: Chaos Will obstructs attempted transcendence. The Supreme Divine Venerable suffers damage to his Dao foundation during his failed attempt, while the Immortal Ancestor is imprisoned after studying an ancient transcendent’s method 551 568.
  • Later reform: Han Xuanji orders Han Husheng to maintain order without blindly preventing living beings from transcending 613.
  • Different external laws: After leaving Chaos, Han Xuanji finds that the Primordial Sea’s more stable laws restrict powers and treasures that had been far more effective within Chaos 624.

History

Primordial Origins

At Chaos’s birth, there was no light, darkness, time, space, or life—only endless Chaos Qi nurturing the primordial Great Dao. Over countless ages, the Great Dao and Chaos’s primordial essence produced the first Chaos Devil Gods 403.

Chaos Will emerged later. The primordial beings’ difficulty escaping Chaos preceded its existence, but its interference added a further obstacle to transcendence 568.

Rise of the Mystic Heaven Dao Palace

The Devil Ancestor and Merchant Venerable Juntian gathered rival powers against Han Xuanji and the Immortal Realm. Their alliance brought together the Dragon Ancestor, Star Ancestor, Soul Ancestor, and armies from their respective forces 534 571 572.

Han Xuanji overwhelmed the Immortal-Exterminating Alliance, prompting Soul Ancestor to retreat. The defeat left the major rival factions vulnerable; Lin Feng helped take control of the Myriad Worlds Merchant Alliance, while the Chaos Dragon Nest and Chaos Star Realm also passed under the Mystic Heaven Dao Palace. The Soul Race subsequently declared its submission 581 586 594.

Subjugation of Chaos Will

After reaching Eternal Dao Master, Han Xuanji deliberately awakened Chaos Will and demanded that it stop blindly obstructing transcendence. Chaos Will refused and ordered its two enforcers—the Forbidden Lord of Darkness and Primordial Lord of Tribulation—to attack 609 610 611.

Han Xuanji suppressed both enforcers and Chaos Will using the superior quality of his Power of Eternity. He later bound Chaos Will to his command, named it Han Husheng, and instructed it to protect living beings, preserve order, and heed his disciples and the Immortal Ancestor in his absence 611 613.

Departure and Return

Han Xuanji and Hun Qianling left Chaos aboard the Thousand Spirits and entered the Primordial Sea. Much later, his improved understanding of Fate allowed him to locate his former world again. He recognized it as a leaf floating in the sea and entered the fragile world using only a wisp of divine thought 624 806.

He subsequently brought the Immortal Ancestor, Supreme Divine Venerable, and others beyond Chaos. Showing them the leaf containing their former universe, he explained that he would take Chaos with him and protect it 810.

Yun Wuji’s Simulated Future

In a simulated future—not the main timeline—Chaos Will unleashes its two Lords of Tribulation to purge living beings and restart Chaos. Their assault destroys most of Chaos’s worlds, and their connection to its origin allows them to regenerate after defeat 546 547.

The Immortal Ancestor sacrifices himself to create an opening. Yun Wuji burns his Dao Fruit and merges with Chaos Will, engraving the rule that “all beings may seek the Dao” into its origin. He transforms the two destructive lords into guardians called Eternal Gloom and Primordial Fire, while damaged worlds begin to heal and transcendence is opened to all sufficiently strong beings 547 548.
