Liu Ling'er grew up serving in the grand commander's residence and became Su Ying's personal maid. She accompanied Su Ying into the Chishui royal palace after her mistress married Lin Changqing. Beatings and scoldings from Su Ying were a routine part of her life as a servant 1 2 7.

Her pregnancy originated in Su Song and Su Ying's attempt to secure a child for Su Ying. Su Song supplied God-Intoxicating Brew, while Su Ying ordered Liu Ling'er to deliver sobering soup containing Illusory Soul Powder. Liu Ling'er briefly considered taking Su Ying's place but decided to leave; Lin Changqing deliberately pulled her back and later admitted that he had acted to spite the Su family 13 15.

After she became pregnant, Lin Changqing appointed her a secondary consort. The promotion placed her at the same formal rank as her former mistress but left her without comparable family backing. Su Ying arranged poisoning, while principal consort Shi Feifei threatened to throw her into the Devil-Sealing Well after childbirth 1.

Liu Ling'er is self-reliant and capable of answering contempt with sharp wit. Banishment to the crude Palace of Reflection did not distress her: having served others since childhood, she could cook and wash for herself and welcomed the absence of constant supervision. When Su Ying mocked her upbringing, she pointed out that she had grown up in Su Ying's own household 2.

Her growing strength allows her to abandon the deference expected of a vulnerable former maid. Nevertheless, she initially conceals her cultivation because she wants a peaceful, safe pregnancy rather than attention or political entanglement 4 7 12.

She sincerely believes her opportunities are blessings from the human ancestors. That belief gives her a strong sense of responsibility, but also makes her fear that cowardice or misuse of her strength could cause those blessings to be withdrawn. Her eventual forgiveness of the palace faction is tied to her conviction that divine power was not bestowed merely for revenge or bullying the weak 9 25.
