Background / History

Imperial standing and exploitation of the Fire Ghost Clan

The Fire Clan belonged to the native imperial clans that controlled the universe’s eight Powers of Origin. Its name afforded members considerable protection: even cultivators stronger than Yan Yao ordinarily treated him courteously because of his clan status 436 438.

During the second war between the Eight Great Imperial Clans and the Ascenders, the Fire Clan exploited the Fire Ghost Clan’s cultivation characteristics. Its members sexually assaulted Fire Ghost women to seize cultivation benefits, substantially strengthening the Fire Clan and briefly bringing its prominence close to that of the Lei Clan. When the Fire Ghost Clan resisted, Fire Clan experts drained and killed hundreds of its strongest cultivators in one night 529.

The exploitation continued afterward. Fire Ghost women who reached the Samsara Realm were required to surrender their first sexual experience to selected Fire Clan youths. Mei Chu was among the victims: Yan Lang assaulted her when she was a Sixth-Grade Heavenly Venerable, reducing her cultivation while advancing his own from the Seventh to the Ninth Grade 529.

The Ninefold Heaven dispute

The Fire Clan attempted to trap Lin Heng through a martial-contest wager. Its representative offered territory and an Origin Vein while demanding that Lin Heng submit to a century of confinement if he lost. Instead, Lin Heng defeated Yan Ming and secured a private promise of a high-grade Origin Vein in exchange for sparing him 426 429.

The settlement became another source of conflict. Yan Lan maintained that the agreement involved only twenty thousand Source Crystals, while Sun Yuan exposed that Yan Yao had delivered merely two thousand. Yan Lan killed Yan Yao and threatened to settle the dispute through force 437.

Internal rivalries gave Lin Heng another opening. Yan Lin’s branch had lost control of the clan’s Ninefold Heaven affairs after Yan Lan’s branch impeached him over his failures in the Soul-Burying Mountain Range. Lin Heng’s side proposed helping Yan Lin recover his position in exchange for a low-grade space spirit treasure 446.

Battle Heaven Pavilion’s establishment

At the Battle Heaven Pavilion’s opening, Yan Lan challenged its treatment of visiting leaders and insisted that it satisfy the Thirteen Factions’ requirements. Sun Yuan subsequently killed him in the first platform fight. The Fire Clan’s envoy, Fifth-Grade Heavenly Venerable Yan Tianxin, accepted that result and entered the second round, only to lose to Lin Heng 478 483 486.

The victories secured the pavilion’s recognition and ten thousand years of protection against attack. Yan Tianxin nevertheless insisted that Lin Heng move to the Eighth Heaven within ten years 486.

Before that move, Yan Lin supplied Lin Heng with four Ninth-Grade Heavenly Venerable Origin Treasure swords bearing fire, metal, earth, and yang powers. In return, Lin Heng agreed to find an opportunity to deal with Yan Lie in the Eighth Heaven—another instance of a Fire Clan branch employing an external enemy against a rival 492.

Defeat in the Eighth Heaven

The Fire Clan coordinated with the other seven imperial clans to restrict the pavilion’s development and push it toward a remote region. Lin Heng instead targeted the Dragon Flame Sect, the strongest sect under Fire Clan protection in the Eighth Heaven 494.

The dispute led to three arena battles using forces selected by the Fire Clan. Its representatives included the Heaven-Swallowing Flame Flood Dragon Clan and the Turtle Field Clan. The Battle Heaven Pavilion won all three contests, obliging the Fire Clan to surrender its sect grounds. The other imperial clans blamed the Fire Clan for the humiliation and departed 499 501 509 515.

Lin Heng chose the Dragon Flame Sect’s territory for his base instead, suspecting that the Fire Clan would remove its Origin Veins and prepare a trap. His suspicions proved justified: the clan deployed the Heavenly Ghost Fire Spirit Array, whose operation did not spare its own clansmen. Yan Lang died during the ensuing confrontation 515 516 518 529.

Failed assault and subordinate defections

Yan Luo secretly provided Lin Heng with intelligence about the Four Lords and Eight Generals and warned him of descending upper-realm experts. Prepared in advance, the pavilion resisted an assault led by clones of Yan Juetian and Yan Xuanming using the Water Race’s Profound Ice Heaven-Defending Formation 537 538 539.

The attack ended with four Primordial Realm experts fleeing and dozens of Fire Clan Heavenly Venerables captured. Lin Heng confiscated the captives’ storage rings and natal Origin Treasures before demanding ransom. Yan Juetian later came in person to negotiate their release 548 549.

Rumors distorted that visit into an alliance or marriage arrangement between the two factions. The Fire Clan destroyed a force responsible for spreading one version, but its retaliation only intensified suspicions. The rumors were later dispelled when Mei Chu publicly announced the Fire Ghost Clan’s departure from Fire Clan rule 551 566.

The Fire Ghost Clan’s defection encouraged the Nether Flame Tribe and more than ten other sects to pledge allegiance to Lin Heng. Their departure exposed widespread dissatisfaction among the Fire Clan’s subordinate factions 566.

Continued clashes with the pavilion

The Fire Clan continued participating in the imperial clans’ efforts to suppress Lin Heng. After Yan Xishan reported his strength in the ancient ruins, the clan leaders renewed their determination to kill him, fearing his potential and suspected four-layer Primordial Chaos World 668.

Its representatives also suffered further arena losses. Yan Kun lost a flaming longsword of the First-Class Primordial Chaos Spirit Treasure rank that the Fire Clan Saint Emperor had lent him. Sun Yuan then challenged the other imperial clans to continue the contest 685 687.

Destruction of the lower-heaven establishments

The Fire Clan’s treatment of Mei Chu’s grandmother, imprisoned in the Heavenly Origin Fire Prison, triggered a larger retaliation. Situ Jiannan attempted to bring her back but was injured, and the Battle Heaven Pavilion mobilized against the clan. The Ascenders warned the Fire Separation Saint Emperor not to intervene, while the other imperial clans declined to support him 569 725 726 727.

In less than half a day, the pavilion destroyed the Fire Clan’s sects from the Ninth through Third Heavens, leaving more than ten thousand dead or wounded. At the Third Heaven confrontation, Yan Juantian killed a clansman attempting to surrender, provoking opposition from Yan Jiuyin and other members. The surviving experts ultimately swore allegiance to the pavilion 729 731 732.

The Fire Separation Saint Emperor initially ordered defectors hunted down, but his own experts ignored him and honored Yan Juantian’s body instead. After advice from his brother Yan Yan, he brought substantial resources to negotiate for the surrendered members. His apology and offer to relinquish his title and the Fire Source Spirit Pearl restored their affection, but their lifelong oaths to the pavilion prevented their departure 732 734.

Collusion with the otherworlders

Resentful of the Lei Clan’s superiority, the Fire Separation Saint Emperor sought a breakthrough beyond the Nine Heavens’ restrictions. He arranged for the Fire Clan to guard the planar passage using the Azure Firmament Origin-Locking Formation, funded by the other twelve factions. Secretly, he intended to cooperate with the otherworlders in exchange for the Origin Soul Spirit 764 774 775.

Eight Sovereign Realm experts endorsed the scheme after being promised future opportunities to transcend the Nine Heavens. However, Situ Jiannan used Makeduolang to convince the otherworlders that the Fire Clan intended to betray them. When Yan Xifan loosened the passage seal to negotiate, the otherworlders attacked, destroyed the formation, and killed eleven of the twelve experts stationed within it 775 785.

The clan continued its plans in secret. Its disciples were ordered to gather materials in the Ten Regions and lower realms for a formation requiring the flesh, blood, and departed souls of one million people. The Fire Separation Saint Emperor subsequently reached an agreement with Sasaki, still intending to turn against the foreigners after obtaining his breakthrough 788 793.

Final attack and judgment

The Fire Separation Saint Emperor eventually brought out the Fire Soul Sword and led the clan against the Battle Heaven Pavilion. He intended to kill Dijiang and seize Liu Ling’er as leverage to force Situ Jiannan to surrender the Origin Soul Spirit 798.

By the final judgment, the clan’s remnants knelt before Lin Heng. The imperial clans demanded extermination, but Qin Hongmian argued that the Fire Clan’s bloodline was necessary to control the Power of Fire Source and preserve the Nine Heavens’ stability 810.

Lin Heng spared only cultivators at the Nirvana Realm and below. Three days later, Yan Xifan and the remaining Fire Clan cultivators above that threshold took their own lives, preserving only the lower-level bloodline 810.

Abilities & Skills

Origin of Fire

The clan’s defining power is the Origin of Fire, one of the eight strongest Origins governing the universe 520.

  • Can absorb power from subsidiary Origins under the Origin of Fire 520.
  • Supports large-scale flame attacks, including fire tornadoes and dragon-shaped strikes 523 710.
  • Full control of the Fire Source power requires the Fire Clan bloodline, making the bloodline’s survival important to the Nine Heavens 810.
  • The Origin Pearl endures, but its bearer is not inherently immortal 798.

Flame Dragon Break

A clan killing move demonstrated by Yan Ming 428.

  • When powered by the Origin of Fire, a single strike is described as capable of leaving no vegetation alive within one hundred thousand li 428.
  • Yan Ming could not draw upon that Origin because he had not reached the Heavenly Venerable Realm 428.

Formations

Formation Function and limitations
Heavenly Ghost Fire Spirit Array Used in the trap at the clan’s Eighth Heaven grounds; its operation also consumed Fire Clan members 518.
Azure Firmament Origin-Locking Formation Could resist the foreign army and required Saint Emperor-level power to break. Its controller had to supply Origin power continuously, risking backlash and cultivation regression 775.
Otherworld passage formation Prepared in the sacred land to open a passage to another world after gathering the flesh, blood, and departed souls of one million people 788.
