Background / History

Arrival on Nostramo

Han was a schoolteacher before being taken from Earth into the Warhammer world. The Emperor was responsible for bringing him there, provoking the Will of Earth’s anger. She forbade genetic alteration of Han and established a blue barrier in the Warp that destroyed attempts to investigate his intentions 12 27.

He awoke on Nostramo in the 30K era with knowledge of his new surroundings. Terrified of the fate awaiting souls in that universe, he attempted suicide in a toxic mining pit even after recognizing the infant Eighth Primarch’s nearby incubation pod. The Will of Earth intervened, and he subsequently awoke in the miners’ dormitory with Curze beside him 1.

Raising Konrad Curze

Han raised Curze as his son, teaching him Chinese, which he called the Old Terra Language of the 2K era. He wrote fairy tales on salvaged materials and used literacy lessons to introduce wisdom, courage, moral responsibility, and the practical use of knowledge 1.

Curze’s destructive visions remained a persistent concern. Han taught him to observe frightening thoughts without following them, comparing an unengaged thought to a thief finding nothing to steal in an empty house 2.

When Curze began attacking Mining Hive Three’s administrators, Han endured questioning by the Adeptus Mechanicus and continued waiting for his return. At their reunion, he gave Curze a handmade copy of The Art of War, expressed confidence in him, and declined to accompany him immediately 4.

Reforming Quintus Hive City

After Curze established himself in Quintus, Han directed him toward internal administration and investigated the city’s accounts. His first confrontation with corrupt nobles was exceptionally violent: he ordered executions for screaming and vomiting, ultimately having roughly a third of those present beheaded. Shen’s willingness to object drew his attention and earned the young man a place among those who called him uncle 7.

Han subsequently rejected the nobles’ demand to govern through Imperial law. Over three months, he recited historical Chinese legal works—including the Classic of Law, Han Feizi, the Book of Lord Shang, and successive imperial codes—while Curze adapted and improved their provisions for Nostramo 14 15.

At the confrontation over the resulting Evernight Code, Han insisted that legal protections could not be separated from responsibilities. He forced the nobles to surrender their privileges, threatened lethal force against resistance, and ultimately spared their lives while imposing 95-percent fines and taxes 20 22.

Building a Family Around the Legion

Han treated Curze’s closest companions as family rather than merely his son’s subordinates. He cooked for Curze, Sevatar, Shen, Talos, Cyrion, and Agrid, then corrected their excessive formality by explaining that his invitation to call him uncle was sincere 9.

Concerned that Curze might relapse into madness after his own death, Han cultivated Sevatar and Shen as future sources of guidance. He helped Sevatar reconcile compassion with the need for law, but deliberately allowed him to reach his own conclusions 12 13.

He also answered the anguished letter signed “Lemur Solus,” later confirmed to have been written by the Night Haunter. Han accepted this older Curze from a parallel world as another son, rejected his claim to be inhuman, and asked him to help guide the younger Curze 17 18 40.

Recovering the Brush and Meeting Trazyn

An Underhive disturbance brought Han to Mills Tarry and the Thunder Warrior captain Kamon. Kamon returned the brush that had calmed his brothers’ madness and eventually written Han’s name. Han offered the warriors peaceful rest and brought fifty of them into the Upper Hive before withdrawing to study his now-complete cheat 25 26.

Trazyn the Infinite later attempted to collect Han and Nostramo. The brush disrupted the encounter, striking Trazyn and subsequently pinning him to the floor. During this crisis, the Will of Earth explained that Han’s soul projection was buried beneath the Warp: he would have to uncover it himself before she could take him home 34.

Han’s offer to restore Necron souls initially enraged Trazyn. Facing death, he demonstrated his ability by producing a soul seed. Trazyn experienced genuine feeling, apologized, and left Han protective gifts. Their later cooperation restored Trazyn to a living body and developed into a friendship 35 36 41 44.

Securing a New Home

Han challenged Curze and the Night Haunter after discovering that they had concealed plans to relocate Nostramo’s population using its moon, Tenebor. His anger centered on their secrecy and renewed identification as demigods rather than people. He promised to find another solution 39 40.

Rejecting travel through the Warp, Han turned to Trazyn. He supplied an Earth-inspired design for a habitable system, which Trazyn’s Crypteks completed within two weeks. Han named it the Peaceful Star System and received its master control device. He also asked Trazyn to destroy or collect the sector if it ever became a hellscape 41 46 47.

As the Emperor approached, Han completed more than a year’s work on five thousand enchanted equipment sets for the Legion’s original members. He instructed them to receive the Emperor respectfully, but standing rather than kneeling 50.

Appearance

  • Youthful appearance: Quintus’s nobles are startled by how young Curze’s father looks; Curze likewise rejects Han’s description of himself as an “old bag of bones” 7 15.
  • Early clothing: Wears a miner’s uniform while teaching Curze near the mining barracks 1.
  • Formal dress: Dresses formally alongside Curze for their meeting with the nobles over Quintus’s government 20.

Personality

Han regards teaching as a profession requiring conscience. His priorities are raising people who can think and act responsibly, not simply producing powerful followers. He praises Curze’s personal growth rather than his conquests and gives his students room to work through difficult moral questions themselves 9 12 13 42.

His warmth coexists with intimidation, corporal punishment, and calculated brutality. He offers family dinners, reassurance, and second chances, yet also uses exemplary executions and threats to break noble resistance. His insistence on equality does not prevent him from treating violence as the practical foundation of political power on Nostramo 7 9 18 22 39.

He is deeply wary of the Warp and initially longs for safety or a return to Earth. Recovering his brush changes his willingness to intervene: instead of retiring after Nostramo joins the Imperium, he decides to make active use of his abilities 14 27 28 34.

  • Signs five thousand copies of the Evernight Code and personally answers legionnaires’ messages 16.

Knowledge Repository and Memory

The book in Han’s mind acts as a repository of knowledge and strengthens his memory 15 16 26.

  • Can retain practically everything after reading it once 15.
  • Recalls extensive legal texts for Curze to adapt to Nostramo 15.
  • Remembers the names attached to all five thousand books he signs 16.

Han can use his soul power and brush to provide the beginnings of a new soul 35 36.

  • Initially has a maximum of three recipients; after helping Trazyn, he reports capacity for two more 35 46.
  • Uses blood for Trazyn’s soul edict, although he states that plain water would normally suffice 42.
  • Explains that Trazyn’s emerging golden cane-shaped mark proves his soul exists; its full manifestation will indicate that the soul is sound 45.

Forging and Enchantment

Han studies forging under Priest Herbert and later combines craftsmanship with supernatural inscriptions 31 50.

  • Hand-adjusts details across five thousand armor-and-weapon sets 50.

  • Remains physically mortal and relies on Trazyn for the young men’s combat training 46.
