Background / History
Previous Life
Tang San was a Tang Sect disciple and a skilled assassin in his previous life. His experience included working with corpses, using poison, and handling Hidden Weapons. He retains techniques and principles from that life, including the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record's instruction to show no mercy once an opponent is identified as an enemy 22 29 63 118.
Enrollment at Nuoding Academy
Tang San arrives at Nuoding Academy with Old Jack but is stopped by its gatekeeper. After Lu Yu intervenes, Tang San begins to suspect that someone deliberately arranged the obstruction. His father, Tang Hao, follows him secretly and also notices that the encounter seems suspicious 22.
At Dorm Seven, Xiao Wu defeats Tang San and replaces him as the dormitory's boss almost immediately. He later defeats Xiao Chenyu, who acknowledges Xiao Wu as “Sister Xiao Wu” 29 36.
Tang San initially regards Yu Xiaogang as a possible human trafficker after Lu Yu challenges the man's claimed identity at the academy gates. Even after an academy teacher vouches for Yu Xiaogang, Tang San approaches their private meeting cautiously and prepares his Sleeve Arrow when his second Martial Soul is exposed 23 29.
Yu Xiaogang explains that he deduced the second Martial Soul from Tang San's Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power. Impressed by the deduction and the promise of suitable cultivation guidance, Tang San kneels, kowtows three times, and formally becomes his disciple 30.
Disillusionment with Yu Xiaogang
Acting for his teacher, Tang San repeatedly approaches Lu Fei to locate Lu Yu. He defends Yu Xiaogang's expertise and argues that their shared External Beast Martial Soul makes him a suitable mentor for Lu Yu. Privately, however, Tang San resents his teacher's fixation on another prospective disciple 37 60 61.
When Tang San finally meets Lu Yu, he proudly presents Yu Xiaogang's Soul Ring limits and his own Hundred-Year ring as evidence of his teacher's knowledge. Lu Yu questions the precision and universality of those limits, then argues that introducing snake venom into a naturally non-toxic plant Martial Soul could damage its foundation. Tang San accepts the argument and begins to believe that his teacher has endangered his cultivation 62 63 64.
Tang Hao reassures his distressed son but insists that Yu Xiaogang must remain alive because he is still needed to resolve the problems of cultivating Twin Martial Souls. He also endorses Lu Yu as someone Tang San may consult about theory 65.
Tang San subsequently tends Yu Xiaogang's injuries while secretly adding slow-acting poison to his medicine. Over three days, he cultivates the appearance of a devoted disciple while deliberately weakening his teacher's Qi and blood. Yu Xiaogang mistakes the care for genuine affection and resolves to teach him without reservation 67.
Shrek Academy Entrance Assessment
Six years after their earlier discussion, Tang San reunites with Lu Yu during Shrek Academy's entrance assessment. He introduces himself as a level 27 Control System Soul Grandmaster and Xiao Wu as his younger sister. His independent research has by then reinforced his contempt for Yu Xiaogang 117.
During the assessment, Tang San uses Blue Silver Grass to restrain Zhao Wuji. After Xiao Wu suffers a Soul Skill backlash, he challenges Zhao Wuji directly, combining control skills, Hidden Weapons, evasive footwork, and the Clear Sky Hammer. Zhao Wuji ultimately blasts him away with Soul Saint-level power; Lu Yu catches him before he can fall onto a broken blade embedded behind him 119 120.
Purification and the Path of Life
In the Star Dou Great Forest, a Man Faced Demon Spider obstructs Tang San while he is trying to pursue Xiao Wu. Lu Yu intervenes and takes over the confrontation. Tang San and Xiao Wu later wait for his return, and Tang San apologizes when Xiao Wu questions him tactlessly 127 134.
Xiao Wu supplies Tang San with an unusual medicinal herb that raises his Soul Power and removes half the poison from his Blue Silver Grass. A two-thousand-year Holy Lotus Soul Ring removes the rest. Although the purification weakens his first two Soul Skills, his Martial Soul changes dramatically and he reaches level 37 135.
Lu Yu then proposes combining Blue Silver Grass with Tang San's Hidden Weapon expertise: an Iron Needle Pine Soul Ring might harden its leaves and grant a leaf-projectile attack. Tang San recognizes the potential, but the supplied passages do not show him acquiring that ring 136.
At Shrek, Tang San continues to conceal his hostility toward Yu Xiaogang beneath outward obedience. He also steps between Flender and Lu Yu when their confrontation escalates 137 138 140.
Appearance
- Early childhood: Described as small and thin when arriving at Nuoding Academy 22.
- Shrek entrance appearance: Wears a short blue jacket and blue trousers 116.
- Technique effect: Purple light appears in his eyes when he activates Purple Demon Eye 29 118.
Personality
Tang San is cautious, observant, and confident in his assassin training. When meeting Yu Xiaogang privately, he locks the door to delay a possible ambush or prevent the man from escaping, then prepares a lethal shot when his secret is exposed. He can also quickly regain his composure after being shocked, as demonstrated when he examines Lu Yu's unusual Soul Rings 29 118.
His attachment to authority is particularly strong toward his father and, initially, his teacher. He treats Yu Xiaogang's instruction with near-religious admiration and resents the possibility of sharing his attention with Lu Yu. Tang Hao's endorsement later becomes a major reason he trusts Lu Yu's advice 60 62 63 135.
Once he feels betrayed, Tang San becomes calculating and vindictive. He considers killing Yu Xiaogang but postpones it for practical reasons, poisons him while performing devoted care, and feels no guilt over the resulting debilitation 65 67 137.
Xiao Wu receives a much gentler side of his personality. He indulges her criticism of his teacher, comforts her, and becomes furious when she is injured. His protectiveness can override his judgment, leading him to continue attacking Zhao Wuji despite their overwhelming difference in strength 61 119 120.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
His primary Martial Soul initially develops through poison-based control before being purified and redirected toward Life 63 135.
| Soul Skill | Applications | Limits / Changes |
|---|---|---|
| First Soul Skill — Blue Silver Entanglement | Produces strands of Blue Silver Grass to bind an opponent's limbs and torso 119. | Zhao Wuji can break the restraints through raw power. Its effectiveness declines after Tang San removes the poison from his Martial Soul 119 135. |
| Second Soul Skill — Parasite | Uses seeds deposited through contact with Blue Silver Grass to produce sudden restraints across the target's body 119. | Briefly arrests Zhao Wuji's movement, creating an opening for Hidden Weapons. It also loses considerable power after purification 119 135. |
| Third Soul Skill — Blue Silver Purification Leaf | Produces consumable leaves that instantly cleanse poison, paralysis, and Mental Interference. A leaf also removes Lu Yu's travel fatigue 136. | Tang San states that a one-hour interval is required 136. |
- Purified form: Becomes a meter-tall sapling with blue-green foliage and fine golden threads. Lu Yu wonders whether it has evolved into the Blue Silver King, but this identification is not confirmed 135.
- Proposed development: Iron Needle Pine could potentially supply harder leaves and a projectile ability, allowing him to replenish leaf-based Hidden Weapons through Soul Power. This remains advice rather than an acquired ability 136.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San's second Martial Soul is a small black hammer, initially kept secret 29 120.
- Strikes Zhao Wuji's blocking hand and head hard enough to knock them aside and leave his skull ringing 120.
- Its long-term cultivation is the reason Tang Hao insists that Tang San preserve his relationship with Yu Xiaogang 65.
Purple Demon Eye
An observational technique that lets Tang San perceive fine details and scrutinize an opponent's movements 29.
- Reaches the second realm, Detailed, by the Shrek entrance assessment 118.
- Detects traces of disguises, sophisticated illusions, and falsified Soul Power; confirms that Lu Yu's four white Soul Rings are genuine 118.
- Tracks muscle movements and gaps in Zhao Wuji's circulating Soul Power during combat 119.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
An evasive footwork technique used to avoid Zhao Wuji's attacks and move behind him 119.
- Enables narrow dodges against a much stronger opponent 119.
- Becomes substantially slower under Zhao Wuji's Gravity Enhancement 120.
Hidden Weapons
Tang San combines concealed mechanisms, thrown projectiles, and precise targeting with his control skills 119 120.
- Uses restraints to create openings for attacks aimed at acupoints and vulnerable joints 119.
- Launches dense barrages from stored weapons, although Zhao Wuji's protective Soul Power deflects most of them 119.
- Inflicts persistent pain with a Dragon Whisker Needle that Zhao Wuji cannot readily expel using Soul Power 120.
- Believes his sleight of hand can secretly replace detoxifying leaves with ordinary ones, preventing Yu Xiaogang from curing his poisoning 137.
Poison Expertise
Tang San retains substantial knowledge of poison from his previous life and initially regards it as a personal advantage 63 64.
- Secretly administers cumulative, slow-acting poison through Yu Xiaogang's medicine 67.
- Targets Qi and blood to cause prolonged weakness, fatigue, and diminished vitality rather than immediate death 67.
- Retains this expertise after removing the poison attribute from Blue Silver Grass 135 137.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Storage Soul Tool worn around his waist; holds everyday supplies and Hidden Weapons 66 119.
- Sleeve Arrow — Wrist-mounted concealed weapon prepared against Yu Xiaogang during their first private meeting 29 30.
- Godly Zhuge Crossbow, Bone-Piercing Needles, and Flying Locust Stones — Used in his barrage against Zhao Wuji 119.
- Dragon Whisker Needle — Causes Zhao Wuji pain that he cannot easily resolve with Soul Power 120.
- Neck-mounted crossbow mechanism — Fires a seven-inch spiral bolt during close combat 120.
- Concealed sole blade — Used for a surprise kick toward Zhao Wuji's crotch 120.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and trusted authority. Secretly protects Tang San and directs him to retain Yu Xiaogang for Twin Martial Soul guidance. Lu Yu later kills Tang Hao; Tang San is not shown learning the truth in the supplied passages 22 65 142 150.
- Ah Yin / Blue Silver Emperor — His mother. Lu Yu considers using her to influence Tang San before his conflict with Tang Hao makes reconciliation impossible 136 149.
- Xiao Wu — Closest companion, whom he introduces as his younger sister. He has special feelings for her, fiercely protects her, and credits her medicinal herb with enabling his purification 61 117 119 135.
- Yu Xiaogang — Formal teacher, first revered and later secretly despised. Tang San maintains the appearance of loyalty while poisoning him and waiting to obtain the knowledge he still needs 30 65 67 137.
- Lu Yu — Theoretical adviser and occasional rescuer whom Tang San trusts partly because of Tang Hao's approval. Their apparent cooperation conceals Lu Yu's growing hostility, particularly after Tang Hao's death 65 120 135 136 150.
- Lu Fei — Fellow Nuoding student whom Tang San repeatedly pressures for information about Lu Yu, souring their relationship 37 61.
- Zhao Wuji — Shrek examiner whom Tang San challenges after Xiao Wu is injured during the entrance assessment 119 120.
