Background / History

Former Pope and Great Enshrined

Qian Daoliu served as Pope before his daughter, Qian Xunji. As Great Enshrined, he retains a stronger power base and greater prestige than she does; Lin Chuan identifies him as the person with the greatest authority in Spirit Hall 31 32.

His achievements also serve as Qian Xunji’s personal benchmark. Since awakening her Martial Soul, she has devoted herself to cultivation, theory, and strengthening Spirit Hall in an effort to prove herself better than her father 16.

Interest in Lin Chuan

When Qian Xunji accepts Lin Chuan as her second disciple, Qian Daoliu initially complains that she has not reported either disciple to him. Learning that Lin Chuan possesses a healing-type Angel Martial Soul, he privately speculates that his unmarried daughter might be raising a future husband. This is his own conjecture, not an arrangement made by Qian Xunji 3.

Golden Crocodile Douluo later reports Lin Chuan’s accomplishments at the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, including his rescue of Liu Erlong and his role in exposing Yu Xiaogang’s poor talent. Qian Daoliu interprets Liu Erlong’s growing attachment to Lin Chuan as evidence against his matchmaking theory 28 29.

Initially, he believes Lin Chuan needs further proof of his qualifications to become Holy Son. His position changes when Qian Xunji reveals the boy’s Twin Angel Martial Souls, concealment ability, Light Wing Blade, and capacity to strengthen Soul Power, Soul Rings, and Soul Bones through Power of Faith. He approves raising Lin Chuan as Holy Son and insists that such important abilities must not be concealed from him 31.

Whale Rubber and Personal Guidance

Qian Daoliu first meets Lin Chuan directly while the boy is refining Whale Rubber. He invites both Lin Chuan and Bibi Dong to call him “Grandpa.” After warning Lin Chuan against testing unknown medicine on himself, he personally consumes the refined ingredient and confirms its body-tempering effect 32.

In recognition of the discovery, he promises rare Whale Rubber and two weeks of personal instruction. He also states that victory in the coming exchange with the Clear Sky Sect will justify Lin Chuan’s appointment as Holy Son 33.

During this training, he assesses Lin Chuan’s abilities, supervises a spar with Bibi Dong, and teaches him the Qian Family Sword Technique. He later decides that Spirit Hall should visit Sea God Island to seek Whale Rubber and support Bibi Dong’s growth through Sea Soul Beasts 33 34 36.

Clear Sky Sect Exchange

When Tang Chen arrives at Spirit Hall, Qian Daoliu meets him in an aerial clash before both elders turn their attention to the younger generation. Their rivalry continues through boasts about their respective prodigies and Tang Chen’s teasing over Qian Daoliu’s lack of grandchildren 38.

During the competition, Qian Daoliu accepts Jin Kuang and Qiangu Feiyun’s request to record their two-against-one victory over Tang Hao as a draw. He then backs Lin Chuan against Tang San, wagering a Soul Bone more than fifty thousand years old against Tang Chen’s stake 40 41.

At the decisive moment, he tells Lin Chuan to stop, after which six concealed Light Wing Blades are revealed around Tang San’s vital points. Following Tang San’s surrender, Qian Daoliu accepts the prize Soul Bone on Lin Chuan’s behalf 43 44.

He subsequently proposes exchanging the fifty-thousand-year Evil Eye Red Scorpion Soul Bone for a roughly seventy-thousand-year Inherited Soul Bone. Although the prize could suit the Fallen Angel, he warns that using it would disrupt the balance between Lin Chuan’s two Martial Souls 44.

Personality

Qian Daoliu is deeply concerned with continuing the Qian family line. Tang Chen’s descendants sharpen his desire for grandchildren, and his repeated pressure on Qian Xunji to marry creates friction between them. He sometimes raises the subject impulsively even when he intended to discuss something else, immediately regretting it afterward 3 31.

He often masks concern with irritation or apparent indifference. Golden Crocodile Douluo recognizes that both father and daughter stubbornly refuse to give ground despite caring about one another. Around Lin Chuan and Bibi Dong, however, Qian Daoliu becomes openly affectionate and feels younger in their company 29 32 35.

As a mentor, he is demanding without being rigid. He praises Bibi Dong’s sound decisions, identifies Lin Chuan’s weaknesses, and offers inventive ways to combine existing abilities. His confidence in Lin Chuan also gives him a mischievous streak: he enjoys allowing Tang Chen to believe victory is assured 34 41.
