| First Appearance | Announced in Chapter 1; Li Wei is identified by Lin Yang’s inspection in Chapter 2 1 2. |
Appearance
- Human disguise: Facelings can look like ordinary people, converse, laugh, form apparent friendships, and eat human food. Li Wei is chewing bread when Lin Yang publicly accuses him 11 45.
- Distorted anatomy: Exposed individuals display unnaturally bending necks, twisted limbs, and jaws opening far beyond human limits 12 30.
- Split mouths: The attacker targeting Liu Jialiang tears the corners of its mouth open, exposing blackened flesh. Shen Cheng’s face splits from the mouth toward the ears 30 35.
- Vertical pupils: Visible in the Faceling killed during the attack on Liu Jialiang and in Shen Cheng’s revealed form 31 35.
- Blood and other fluids: The balding Faceling leaves a black-blooded corpse. Another individual’s severed bone spike leaks grayish-white mucus 26 37.
Abilities & Skills
Human Disguise and Behavioral Imitation
Facelings imitate human behavior well enough to remain embedded in survivor groups for days 20 26.
- Participation in group activities: Li Wei fights alongside Lin Yang’s faction and shares food, giving witnesses reasons to defend him 10 11.
- Emotional acting: The balding Faceling cries, invokes his supposed young son, and pleads innocence convincingly enough that survivors physically shield him 25.
- Consistent answers: The balding man answers questions about his activities and family without hesitation; ordinary questioning does not expose him 25.
- Possible replacement: The Yellow Room broadcast warns that familiar companions may already have been replaced. It does not explain when or how replacement occurs 41.
Strategic Deception
Facelings exploit trust and the survivors’ dependence on special identities rather than relying solely on physical attacks 33 35.
- Seer impersonation: Shen Cheng claims to possess inspection powers and publicly assigns identities to other survivors 33.
- False accusations: He later declares Lin Yang a Faceling and attempts to have him restrained, presenting the accusation as a reluctant duty 35.
- Social pressure: His request that Lin Yang stay with him creates a dilemma: accept a potentially lethal arrangement or refuse and lose the group’s trust 34.
- Isolation tactics: Li Wei repeatedly tries to draw Lin Yang away from other people under the pretext of talking privately and teaming up 2.
- Priority targets: Broadcasts warn that Facelings pay special attention to the Seer. Jiang Yu’an also concludes that their attack on Liu Jialiang reflects fear of his Gunslinger identity 31 45.
Strength, Speed, and Natural Weapons
Exposed Facelings can overpower individual humans and remain dangerous against armed groups 30 31.
- Rapid movement: One closes a distance of three or four meters almost instantly 30.
- Piercing fingers: The same attacker drives its fingers two inches into Fatty’s shoulder 30.
- Bone spikes: Another attacks Lin Yang’s neck with a spike extending from a twisted arm 37.
- Resistance to injury: The attacker targeting Liu Jialiang withstands repeated blows, stabbing, and a spear through its chest before the survivors finally kill it 31.
- Residual movement: A severed hand continues twitching and scraping its nails against the floor after being shot off 37.
Slaughter State
The broadcast states that Facelings abandon their disguises and enter the slaughter state when they outnumber the survivors, warning that everyone will die once this happens 8.
- Lin Yang applies this rule to an isolated group of three: if two had been Facelings, they should have attacked the remaining human during the night. He therefore concludes that at most one is a Faceling 24.
- An exposed attack does not by itself establish that the slaughter state has begun. One Faceling openly attacks Liu Jialiang while humans still greatly outnumber the remaining impostors 30 31.
Detection and Countermeasures
| Method | Evidence and Limitations |
|---|---|
| Seer inspection | Lin Yang’s ability explicitly identifies Li Wei and Shen Cheng as Facelings. It also clears the suspicious Liu Jialiang by identifying him as the Gunslinger 2 22 33. |
| Physical evidence and privileged knowledge | Jiang Yu’an dates blood on Li Wei’s hand to roughly eighteen hours earlier. His subsequent claim that Zhang Lei died at four in the morning reveals knowledge the others do not possess 11 12. |
| Group protection | A broadcast says Facelings dislike displaying their abilities before outsiders and may be very strong when acting alone. Lin Yang interprets this as possible weakness in crowds, not a guarantee of safety 12. |
| Organized watches | Lin Yang establishes four-person groups with rotating watch duties and support from neighboring groups. His faction survives the following night without a death 13 16. |
| Lighting and visibility | Firelight makes faces easier to monitor. In the brightly lit Yellow Room corridors, Lin Yang judges that open sightlines and few hiding places reduce opportunities for isolated attacks 30 42. |
| Weapons and coordinated attacks | Facelings can be killed with collective beating and stabbing, improvised spears, and gunfire 12 26 31. |
Suspicious behavior alone is unreliable. Liu Jialiang’s solitary movements and refusal to eat draw accusations, but inspection reveals a helpful special identity. Conversely, fighting for the group, sharing food, and appearing emotionally sincere do not establish that someone is human 11 22 25.
Known Individuals
Names below identify the human identities presented to the survivors.
| Identity | Exposure or Distinguishing Actions | Documented Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Li Wei | First confirmed Faceling. Attempts to isolate Lin Yang, later betrays knowledge of Zhang Lei’s death, and transforms before attacking Jiang Yu’an 2 11 12. | Restrained by Lin Yang and beaten and stabbed to death by the survivors 12. |
| Balding middle-aged man | One of the three men associated with Zhang Hao. Uses tears, family claims, and previous food-sharing to resist Lin Yang’s accusation 24 25. | Shot by Liu Jialiang; the broadcast confirms a Faceling’s death 26. |
| Unnamed attacker targeting Liu Jialiang | Openly attacks the Gunslinger and wounds Fatty when he intervenes 30. | Speared and beaten to death by the group 31. |
| Shen Cheng | Returns after an apparent sacrifice, claims to be the Seer, and attempts to frame Lin Yang. Lin Yang’s inspection confirms his identity 33 35. | Exposed when the two Yanbian men attack him and his disguise tears apart 35. |
| Unnamed bone-spike attacker | Ambushes Lin Yang at close range during the confrontation’s aftermath 37. | Shot by Liu Jialiang; its severed hand is crushed by Fatty, leaving one Faceling 37. |
| Liu Yan | Reveals herself to Lin Yang on the rooftop as the school’s last Faceling 37. | Lin Yang fires at her after she assumes his gun is empty; the supplied chapter ends before the result 37. |
Story Role / Major Arcs
School: Level - Behind
The opening broadcast announces 36 survivors and six Facelings hiding among them. Lin Yang’s first successful identification exposes Li Wei privately, establishing inspection as his means of distinguishing impostors from humans 1 2.
The discovery of Zhang Lei and another victim turns initial disbelief into panic. Accusations nearly lead to Chen Yu’s execution, prompting Lin Yang to demonstrate how easily unsupported claims can make the survivors kill one another 6 7 8.
Li Wei’s death proves that Facelings are killable. The later deaths of the balding impostor and the attacker targeting Liu Jialiang reduce their reported number to four and then three 12 26 31.
Shen Cheng’s false-Seer scheme shifts the conflict toward control of the group. After his exposure and another impostor’s attack, Lin Yang deliberately makes himself available as bait rather than wait for starvation to destroy order. Liu Yan takes the opportunity and reveals herself as the last Faceling 33 35 37.
Level - Yellow Room
Upon entering the Yellow Room, the survivors receive a new announcement: 18 survivors and four Facelings are present. A further warning raises the possibility that familiar companions have been replaced 40 41.
After Liu Yunwei is killed while away from the group, Lin Yang judges a Faceling responsible with at least 85 percent probability. His reasons include the isolated victim, the attacker’s concealment, and the targeting of a supposed prophet; the identity is not confirmed in the supplied account 48.
Four Facelings remain at the broadcast following Li Xuan’s death 50.
Related Entity: Faceless Ghost
The Yellow Room introduces a naming ambiguity: Lin Yang’s system labels a black, featureless humanoid “Faceling (hostile),” but he names it “Faceless Ghost.” The survivors subsequently discuss these black monsters separately from the four human-disguised Facelings among them 44 45.
| Feature | Documented Details |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Approximately two meters tall, entirely black, with a smooth surface instead of facial features 44. |
| Movement | Glides across shadows. A knife-carrying individual moves faster than a human can run 44. |
| Behavior | Hostile to intruders and able to sense being watched despite having no eyes 44. |
| Preferred environment | Damp, dark places 44. |
| Inspection guidance | Keep at least ten meters away; do not stare at, approach, or offend them 44. |
| Lin Yang’s response | Leads the survivors toward dry, brightly lit corridors 44 45. |
The supplied passages do not establish whether Faceless Ghosts are a subtype of the infiltrating Facelings or otherwise explain the shared system label 44 45.
