Background / History

Civilian Life and the Tavern’s Opening

Zhang Yu spends years in the Naruto world as an ordinary Konoha civilian. With neither a powerful family nor chakra talent, he never attends the Ninja Academy. He works odd jobs and saves enough to take over a struggling tavern on an out-of-the-way street. Initially, its upper floor contains one room for himself and two intended for future employees 1.

The Undead Tavern System activates once he possesses a fixed place of business. Given one initial summon, Zhang Yu chooses Madara Uchiha for the deterrent value of his name and strength. Although frightened by Madara’s presence, he maintains a composed front, uses his knowledge of Madara’s plans as leverage, and demonstrates the system’s ability to suppress hostility and return employees to the Pure Land 1 2 3 4 5.

Building the Undead Staff

The opening mission provides another summon, which Zhang Yu uses to bring back Hashirama. He establishes rules against fighting, frightening customers, and casually using destructive techniques in Konoha. Rather than conceal his employees, he deliberately places the two legends where visitors can recognize them, turning their identities into publicity and opportunities for system rewards 6 7 8 10.

After the Scroll of Seals mission, a special reward allows him to summon Izuna and Tobirama together using one summoning opportunity. He subsequently divides responsibilities among the staff: Madara handles troublesome guests, Izuna prepares food, and Tobirama manages accounts, inventory, schedules, and rules 20 21 28.

Recruitment and Business Expansion

Zhang Yu sends Hashirama and Madara to recruit Zabuza and Haku through posthumous employment agreements. After the pair die, their contracts intercept their souls at the edge of the Pure Land. He summons them into restored bodies, welcomes them as employees, and gives them the day to recover before assigning work 37 50 73.

The tavern’s expansion includes a vegetable garden, fishpond, outdoor swimming pool, and the purchase of a neighboring shop. Establishing a self-sufficient ingredient base earns him the reward used to replicate Madara’s abilities. The business later includes a hot pot and barbecue restaurant and a game room 104 146 208 224.

Chunin Ninja Exams

Zhang Yu enters the Chunin Ninja Exams with Haku and Yugao. Unable to answer the written questions, he gives up on solving the paper. In the Forest of Death, he treats scroll collection as a business opportunity and takes Karin under his protection, intending to recruit her for the tavern 168 170 177.

He sells all the collected scrolls—including his own team’s set—thereby eliminating himself, Haku, and Yugao from further participation. They proceed to watch the matches instead. Before the finals, he briefs Hashirama, Madara, and Tobirama on Orochimaru’s impending Konoha Crush operation and his interest in Sasuke 189 211.

Tsunade and the Hyuga Clan

After Hiruzen’s death, Jiraiya approaches Zhang Yu because the revived Senju brothers may be able to persuade Tsunade to become Hokage. Tsunade later thanks Zhang Yu for making her reunion with her grandfather and granduncle possible. When she oversleeps on the morning of her succession ceremony, he enters her room with a spare key and wakes her 222 237 255.

Zhang Yu also safely removes Neji’s Caged Bird Seal. Afterward, he presents himself as too weak to stand, prompting Hiashi to leave Hinata in charge of his care 263.

Sasuke’s Departure

During the pursuit of Sasuke, Zhang Yu locates him and the Sound Four from more than a hundred kilometers away. He combines Kamui and Flying Thunder God to reach their destination and transport the others there. He later accepts Tayuya as a prospective maid after refusing her proposal of marriage because she is fourteen 309 314.

The pursuit ends with Sasuke choosing Orochimaru and the other Genin returning without serious injuries. Zhang Yu receives 100,000 gold coins for helping Tsunade plan the mission 323.

Journey to the Land of Water

In a hot spring town, Zhang Yu exposes a gambling hall’s rigged dice and table mechanisms, wins twenty million ryo in the final round, and forces the establishment to close. His party later accompanies Kakuzu and Hidan toward the Land of Water, where they are searching for the Six-Tails’ jinchuriki 343.

When Tobirama proposes exploiting Kirigakure’s instability, Zhang Yu rejects the idea, pointing out that the village is not Konoha’s enemy and that he belongs to himself rather than Konoha. He later agrees to let Mei Terumi guide the group toward Mount Katsuragi 346 356.

Personality

Zhang Yu is ambitious but pragmatic. Before receiving the system, his lack of strength forces him to suppress his desire to accomplish something significant. Once the tavern becomes a source of power, he prioritizes missions, summons, and system gold over ordinary money or political office. He openly tells Danzo that he has no interest in controlling Konoha’s institutions 1 6 10 202.

He frequently teases others and uses personal knowledge, bargains, and technicalities to gain an advantage. He enjoys provoking Hashirama and Madara about their closeness, trades information for abilities, and circumvents Anko’s prohibition on ninjutsu by using genjutsu instead 8 28 178.

As an employer, he insists that even legendary ninja follow work rules. He reprimands staff for drinking away the inventory and neglecting customers, but distinguishes between willing misconduct and alleged coercion when deciding punishments 41 126.

His sharp tongue coexists with practical generosity. He gives newly summoned employees time to recover, provides Karin with a room close to his own when she feels unsafe, and gives gifts to ordinary acquaintances.
