Background / History

Hashirama and Madara Uchiha knew each other from childhood before eventually taking opposing sides. Despite their conflicts, they shared a desire for peace and founded Konoha together, hoping to overcome inherited hatred. Hashirama’s stated purpose in founding the village was to keep children from having to go to war 8 12 25 28.

Their rivalry culminated in Hashirama’s victory at the Valley of the End. Unknown to him, Madara bit off a piece of his flesh before the battle ended, survived through a prearranged Izanagi, and later transplanted the flesh into himself. Hashirama only learns much later that his cells helped Madara obtain Wood Release and eventually awaken the Rinnegan 194.

Tobirama later criticizes Hashirama for leaving much of Konoha’s administration to him while spending his time seeking out Madara for fights, outings, and stone-skipping contests. Hashirama admits that he failed to think through the burden this placed on his brother 288 290.

Appearance

Personality

Hashirama is friendly, conciliatory, and quick to speak on other people’s behalf. Immediately after being summoned, he assumes Madara is responsible but tries to discuss the situation rather than attack him. He subsequently explains Madara’s harsh manner to Zhang Yu and asks the tavern owner not to hold it against him 7 8.

His affection is often exuberant and embarrassing to its recipients. He attempts to embrace Tobirama as soon as his brother returns, becomes openly sentimental when drunk, and cries with happiness over Tsunade becoming Hokage. He is also mischievous: he joins Madara in stealing liquor and enthusiastically experiments with impractical ideas, including a wooden post propelled by fireworks 20 33 39 257 305.

His easygoing manner disappears when Konoha’s founding ideals are betrayed. Hearing about Sakumo’s suicide, Orochimaru’s experiments, and the estrangement of Hiruzen’s disciples leaves him furious. Nevertheless, he gradually accepts his new life at the tavern, eventually telling Jiraiya that he is no longer the First Hokage, but an ordinary employee 25 115.

Hashirama’s signature kekkei genkai supports large-scale combat, chakra suppression, construction, and precise manipulation. His Wood Release and Sage Body are described as having been developed to their limits 17 39 183 196.
