Background and History
Original Life and the Eye of the Moon Plan
Madara fought during the Warring States era and eventually founded Konoha alongside Hashirama Senju. His younger brother Izuna died at Tobirama Senju’s hands, leaving a grievance Madara still refuses to dismiss after their summoning 8 12 87.
After losing to Hashirama at the Valley of the End, Madara survived through Izanagi and implanted Hashirama’s flesh into himself. He spent decades waiting for the Rinnegan to awaken, later sustaining himself with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 194.
His Eye of the Moon Plan sought to use the Ten-Tails and the moon to place the entire Shinobi World under genjutsu. He regarded a dream without war, betrayal, death, or suffering as salvation from a corrupt reality. To prepare for his resurrection, he secretly transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato and groomed Obito Uchiha as the plan’s executor 3 4.
Summoning and Employment
Zhang Yu chooses Madara as his first summon because his name and strength can deter the Shinobi World. Madara initially assumes that Nagato has resurrected him, then becomes suspicious of both his unusually complete body and Zhang Yu’s immunity to his Sharingan 1 2.
Zhang Yu reveals knowledge of Madara’s secret plans and explains the Undead Tavern System. Madara repeatedly tests its restrictions, discovering that hostility toward Zhang Yu immediately seals his Chakra. Zhang Yu then briefly sends him back to the Pure Land and recalls him, demonstrating that Madara cannot refuse his authority 3 4 5.
Madara resents being made to serve drinks and wipe tables. Nevertheless, he begins working at the tavern and acknowledges that Zhang Yu’s abilities operate beyond the Shinobi World’s known techniques. Zhang Yu gives no definitive answer about whether Infinite Tsukuyomi succeeded 4 5 13.
Reunions and the Scroll of Seals
The possibility of seeing Hashirama again gives Madara a personal reason to support further summons. Hashirama’s arrival quickly restores their familiar pattern of arguments, teasing, and reluctant cooperation 6 7 8.
During the Scroll of Seals mission, Madara kills Mizuki with Majestic Destroyer Flame, setting Konoha’s back mountain ablaze. He also enters Naruto’s mindscape and frightens the Nine-Tails before arguing with Hashirama over who deserves credit for retrieving the scroll 17 19.
Zhang Yu rewards the successful mission by summoning both Izuna and Tobirama. Izuna’s return matters more to Madara than the material rewards, and Madara allows his brother to thank Zhang Yu formally for their reunion 20 21.
The Uchiha Clan Massacre
While helping test Team 7, Madara learns from Sasuke that the Uchiha Clan has been wiped out. His own Chakra sweep finds the former clan compound empty. He threatens to confront Hiruzen and destroy Konoha if he receives no satisfactory explanation, but Zhang Yu recalls him before he reaches the Hokage 30 31.
Izuna comforts him after hearing the news. Hashirama later promises to investigate alongside Madara, arguing that they should punish those responsible rather than destroy a village full of uninvolved people 31 35.
When Danzo visits the tavern, Madara exposes the Sharingan beneath his bandages and questions his involvement in the massacre. Danzo admits that he pushed for the clan’s elimination. The confrontation ends when Zhang Yu orders those involved to stop acting, and Madara immediately deactivates his Mangekyō 202 203.
Upon learning that Itachi is at the tavern, Madara returns with Zhang Yu to question him personally. Zhang Yu specifically instructs him not to kill Itachi outright; the supplied account ends with Madara preparing for that confrontation 240.
Later Tavern Life
Madara accompanies Team 7 to the Land of Waves, later becomes Sasuke’s instructor, and takes part in the tavern’s gardening, construction, and entertainment activities. His first recorded assignment for Sasuke as a student is harvesting vegetables and carrying them into cold storage 43 140 141 145.
He repeatedly defeats Indra in sparring, then uses Perfect Susanoo when Zhang Yu sends them to the Dispute Arena. By this point, Madara’s combination of ocular power, Hashirama’s cells, Chakra, and experience surpasses Indra’s demonstrated combat ability 193 194 195 196.
At the Valley of the End, Madara bets that Sasuke will defeat Naruto, with the loser buying everyone drinks. Sasuke’s victory proves his prediction correct 318 320.
When the tavern discusses securing the Three-Tails, Madara proposes overwhelming Kirigakure with his Perfect Susanoo and Hashirama’s True Several Thousand Hands. The discussion does not establish an agreed plan 346.
Appearance
Madara appears in crimson armor with long black hair reaching his waist and a hard, cold face. His presence is oppressive even when he is not actively releasing Chakra 2 43.
- Eyes: Can display the Three-Tomoe Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and purple, ring-patterned Rinnegan 2 4 304.
- Bearing: Frequently stands with folded arms and an unsmiling expression; even his attempt at a welcoming smile unnerves Kakashi 10.
- Summoned body: Breathes, circulates Chakra normally, and has none of the visible cracks associated with Impure World Reincarnation 2 202.
Personality
Madara is proud, blunt, and resistant to coercion. He refuses to abandon the Uchiha name and initially treats tavern service as an indignity. Hashirama describes him as harsh in expression rather than wholly unreasonable 3 8 13.
His attachment to Izuna and the Uchiha remains powerful despite his disappointment in the clan’s choices. News of the massacre turns that attachment into indiscriminate rage, while Izuna’s reassurance visibly softens him 12 31 35.
He is also extraordinarily patient when pursuing a goal. Madara says that, had the Rinnegan never awakened, he would have continued waiting until death—a resolve that earns praise from Hashirama, Indra, and Asura 194.
Tavern life exposes his competitiveness and fondness for drinks. He steals liquor, exploits loopholes to drink cola, and worries that finishing garden work too quickly will deprive him of the next day’s beer reward. Despite his initial refusal to work, he eventually declines a sparring invitation with the excuse that he has work tomorrow 90 105 117 288.
Abilities and Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Madara possesses both the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and powerful genjutsu, though neither can bypass Zhang Yu’s system protection 2.
- Uses ocular power to enter Naruto’s sealed mindscape 17.
- Overwhelms Indra’s Mangekyō with his own ocular pressure 193.
- Tracks movement and subtle visual details, but cannot see through clothing; his attempt to determine Haku’s sex fails even after activating the Mangekyō 81.
Rinnegan and Yin-Yang Release
Madara awakens the Rinnegan after the powers obtained from Hashirama’s flesh merge with his own. He states that he subsequently masters Yin-Yang Release and learns additional forbidden techniques 194.
- Retains access to the Rinnegan in his system-summoned body 4.
- Historically summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to prolong his life 194.
- Cannot use these powers against Zhang Yu: hostile intent causes his Chakra to stagnate immediately 4.
Perfect Susanoo
Madara manifests a towering blue Chakra construct with layered skeletal structures, channels, armor, and enormous wings 23 196.
- Uses it in the Dispute Arena against Hashirama and Indra 23 195.
- Its scale and ocular power exceed Indra’s demonstrated Susanoo 196.
- Proposes using it to advertise the tavern and later to overwhelm Kirigakure; neither proposal is shown being carried out 6 346.
Fire Release
Madara’s Fire Release produces destructive effects far beyond ordinary utility needs 17 183.
- Majestic Destroyer Flame: Engulfs a forest in a sea of fire, kills Mizuki, and leaves the back mountain burning 17 19.
- Great Fireball Technique: Vaporizes Haku’s incoming ice needles before they reach within three meters of the group 53.
- Fine-control limitation: Even while deliberately minimizing his output to light firewood, produces a fireball over two meters across 183.
Wood Release and Senjutsu Chakra
His selected summoning form includes Wood Release and Senjutsu Chakra. The system later identifies his Wood Release constitution among the abilities available for Zhang Yu to replicate 1 104.
- Acquires Wood Release following the implantation of Hashirama’s flesh 194.
- Combines Hashirama’s cells with his Rinnegan and Uchiha powers, contributing to his advantage over Indra 195 196.
Taijutsu, Shadow Clones, and Combat Experience
Madara combines overwhelming strength with swift, economical attacks and extensive battlefield experience 30 50 195.
- Uses a Shadow Clone to conduct Team 7’s bell test, catching Sasuke’s kunai between two fingers 30.
- Kills two hostile Kirigakure ninja by breaking their necks before they can react 50.
- Repeatedly defeats Indra in sparring 195.
Chakra Sensing and Concealment
Madara detects distinctive Chakra signatures and can suppress his own presence 13 14 175.
- Identifies the Nine-Tails’ Chakra within Naruto 14.
- Searches Konoha for surviving Uchiha Chakra signatures 30.
- Detects Orochimaru’s unusually powerful Chakra beneath a Kusagakure disguise 175.
- Notices brief Chakra signatures five kilometers southeast of his inn 234.
- Remains undetected by Konoha patrols and Anbu while observing the village with Hashirama 13.
System Restrictions
His physical completeness does not free him from the Undead Tavern System’s authority 4 5.
- Cannot harm Zhang Yu through genjutsu or other attacks 2 4.
- Loses access to Chakra whenever he forms hostile intent toward Zhang Yu; circulation resumes when he abandons that intent 4.
- Can be recalled to the tavern or returned to the Pure Land at Zhang Yu’s discretion 5 31.
Equipment and Associated Items
- Crimson armor — Worn upon summoning and during his early work greeting tavern customers 2 10.
- Nine-Tails summoning contract — Listed among the capabilities of his historical Valley of the End form 1.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Historically summoned to sustain his life after awakening the Rinnegan 194.
- Jiraiya’s novel — Takes one of Jiraiya’s books as payment toward his unpaid tavern debt 113.
Relationships
- Zhang Yu — Summoner and employer. Madara initially challenges him, later acknowledges his abilities, and eventually becomes the template for Zhang Yu’s power replication 4 13 104.
- Hashirama Senju — Konoha co-founder, lifelong rival, and explicitly Madara’s “dearest friend.” They alternate between cooperation, sparring, petty arguments, and shared attempts to obtain drinks 6 14 38 288.
- Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother whose death remains a deep wound. Their reunion is a major personal reward, and Izuna helps calm Madara’s grief over the clan massacre 12 20 31 33.
- Tobirama Senju — Izuna’s killer and a persistent adversary in arguments. They nevertheless work together at the tavern and jointly teach Hashirama proper garden preparation 12 90 202.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Fellow clansman and student. Madara criticizes his pride and Sharingan use, but reacts sharply to Orochimaru’s interest in taking him away 87 140 211.
- Indra Ōtsutsuki — Madara’s earlier incarnation and frequent sparring opponent. Indra admires his perseverance but consistently loses to his greater combined powers and experience 194 195 196.
- Haku — Coworker whose stated identity as a boy Madara repeatedly disputes. His unsuccessful investigation involves the Sharingan and thoughts of obtaining access to the Byakugan 81 97 132.
- Nagato Uzumaki — Recipient of Madara’s transplanted Rinnegan and the intended means of his resurrection through Rinne Rebirth 3.
- Obito Uchiha — Rescued and groomed by Madara as an executor of the Eye of the Moon Plan 3 4.
- Itachi Uchiha — Condemned by Madara for killing the clan and taking the blame upon himself. Madara returns to the tavern intending to question him directly 240.
