Background / History

Service as the Ruler of Death

Phanes created Ronava and Asmoday together, assigning death to Ronava and space to Asmoday. Ronava’s duties included returning lost souls to the Ley Lines, work that left her little opportunity to rest 1 37.

She spent most of several thousand years alone, treating constant work as an answer to loneliness. By the time she lost her authority, she had become weary of both her responsibilities and the scheming associated with her former position 9 32.

Her earlier dealings included helping Nahida after Greater Lord Rukkhadevata’s fall and teaching her how to face parting. She had also met Egeria and previously helped Natlan 39 50 59.

Snezhnaya and Rescue

Before the opening chapter, Ronava attempted to retrieve Paimon for Celestia. Lumine believed she had intended to kill Paimon, but Ronava later insisted that returning a creation of Celestia—not killing her—had been her objective 13.

After losing her authority and suffering grievous wounds from the Jester, Ronava prepared to use herself to destroy the Skyfrost Nail. Lin En intercepted her and administered a Soul-Returning Pill. When her remaining strength failed, he caught her and took her to shelter 1.

Initially suspicious of his knowledge and motives, she repeatedly questioned why he had saved her. Despite her insistence on independence, her injuries forced her to accept his care 1 2 5.

Appearance

• Hair: Long, silver-white hair that falls over her shoulders and takes on a faint silver sheen in sunlight 1 6.
• Eyes: Usually described as golden; one early passage describes them as silver-gray 3 4 19.

Personality

Ronava is proud, blunt, and resistant to appearing helpless. Early in her recovery, she rejects assistance even when she cannot stand securely and threatens Lin En when his behavior crosses her boundaries. She also dislikes owing favors and promises to repay his help once she recovers 1 2 5.

Her caution is practical rather than purely prideful. She recommends fleeing from dangerous Fatui encounters while weakened, studies unfamiliar mechanisms before acting, and recognizes that the Tsaritsa’s diplomatic approach is an attempt to assess her recovery and Lin En’s origins 14 28 54.

Ordinary life gradually softens her reserve. Yue Ning’s kindness unsettles her more than hostility does, while festivals, sightseeing, and quiet time with Lin En become experiences she openly admits enjoying. Her tenderness often appears through actions before words: tending his injuries, holding his hand, and remaining close while he rests 6 31 40 50 57.

Although she initially claims to have accepted death, losing Lin En becomes a deeply personal fear. She admits that she cannot answer what she would do without him and says she might fight the Heavenly Principles to the death if they killed him 4 68.

Ronava formerly governed death and handled the passage of lost souls back to the Ley Lines 1 37.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Liyue and Dragonspine

Recovering under Lin En’s care, Ronava experiences the Moonchase Festival and accepts his gift of a rose hairpin. Their journey to the Nail of Retribution becomes a turning point when he takes a potentially fatal blow for her, provoking an unusually emotional response 6 7 11.

After avoiding a confrontation with Lumine in Liyue Harbor, they travel to Dragonspine. There, Ronava helps defeat a dragon remnant and absorbs power from the Skyfrost Nail before continuing to Mondstadt 13 14 19.

Inazuma and Tsurumi Island

Ronava agrees to investigate Tsurumi Island’s disappearances in exchange for Yae Miko providing the token Phanes gave Raiden Makoto. She discovers and destroys a Ley Line-draining array, but its final signal alerts its creator and releases a dangerous purple haze 26 28 29.

The ensuing battles leave both travelers injured. While sheltering during their return voyage, Ronava kisses Lin En and tells him she does not regret bringing him along. Following the Abyss invasion of Inazuma and her unexpected reunion with Asmoday, she returns to Tsurumi Island to absorb power from its nail 30 31 33 37 38.

Sumeru and Fontaine

At Mount Damavand, Ronava and Lin En fight Apep’s regenerating substitute before confronting Apep itself. Nahida’s intervention ends the battle, allowing Ronava to recover more power from the nail 45 46.

She then chooses Fontaine as a vacation destination. Their stay includes sightseeing, photographs, and growing romantic intimacy, interrupted by Arlecchino’s delivery of the Tsaritsa’s offer. Ronava refuses cooperation and keeps Lin En close after recognizing the implied threat to him 46 50 54 57.

Natlan and the Chasm

In Natlan, Ronava defeats Mavuika in a spar but cannot access the Celestial Nail. She uncovers Asmoday’s intention to destroy Natlan’s Ley Lines and release the Abyss to force Phanes into a confrontation; she and Lin En choose to wait rather than intervene 60 62 63.

Later, the pair battle Pierro and the Tsaritsa in the Chasm. Their combined attack wounds the Tsaritsa and forces both enemies to retreat, but leaves Lin En badly injured. Zhongli subsequently arranges shelter for them at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor 72 74 76.

Chenyu Vale

Ronava helps expose a kidnapping operation that uses Dream-Lingering Flowers to incapacitate herb gatherers. She ambushes abductors, interrogates their associates, and obtains the locations of captive hideouts from Zhao Siyan 81 84 86.

After Lin En frees the captives, they plan to hand the kidnappers over to the villagers and settle in town to open a Wangsheng Funeral Parlor branch 86.
