Background / History

Sacrifice and life in the Heavenly God Cave

Chen Duo’s parents disappeared while she and Chen Mu were young, leaving their eldest and third uncles’ families to care for them. Her congenital high myopia prevented her from seeing clearly beyond one or two meters. The villagers considered the condition incurable and sent her to the Heavenly God Cave as a sacrifice despite Chen Mu’s opposition 1 3.

Chen Mu rescued her but could not immediately take her home. They survived in the cave for more than five months, eating hunted animals and sheltering behind fires and, later, rune defenses. At five years old, Chen Duo helped clean their shelter, dry meat, and make clothing from rat skins 4 5 8 11.

Chen Mu eventually made glasses that corrected her vision. He presented her restored eyesight as a miracle from the heavenly god, overcoming the elders’ refusal to readmit a sacrificial offering. After Chen Shanxiong tested her vision, she was allowed to return to the village rather than live under guard on the mountain behind it 10 11.

Martial training and journey to Central Land

After returning home, the siblings discovered the hidden Acala Heart Sutra. Chen Mu began teaching it to Chen Duo, whose martial talent contrasted sharply with her inability to understand talisman cultivation. He eventually stopped pressing her to study talismans and encouraged her to specialize in the Martial Dao 12 14 25.

Chen Duo later accompanied Chen Mu and A Huo toward Central Land, with Mingye joining them along the way. She rescued a little girl from beneath a corpse in a tribe massacred by horse bandits and proposed taking her as a sworn younger sister. The journey also exposed weaknesses in her combat experience, which improved through repeated dangerous encounters 50 52 54.

Heaven-Questioning Pavilion

Chen Duo received a high Spiritual Power aptitude rating in the Pavilion’s admissions examination. During the subsequent competitive trial, she provided gunfire support and defended Chen Mu’s central array disk. Niu Buqu eliminated her from the trial while she refused to abandon that position; the examination’s protection prevented her death 63 70 73.

Qiu Zhen personally sought her out as a disciple. She first asked to consult Chen Mu, then formally became Qiu Zhen’s personal disciple through three kneelings and nine kowtows 89.

Her time at the Pavilion ended in conflict over Mingye’s identity. Chen Duo refused to surrender her to Ge Yu and Hu Peng, suffered an injury from Hu Peng’s Thundercloud Palm, and escaped with Mingye. During the later breakout, she shot Ge Yu dead and forced Yi Qiao’er to surrender at gunpoint before fleeing with the others 181 188.

Defense of Chen Village and the Jianglan campaign

Back in Chen Village, Chen Duo became commander of the guards, overseeing village defenses and the protection of logistics forces. Chen Mu regarded defensive command as her particular strength, although she wanted to fight the Flame Blessing Tribe directly to avenge their mother’s suffering 193 210.

During the war against the allied tribes, she repeatedly proposed a surprise attack on the Jianglan stronghold to capture its leader and break the enemy coalition. Once authorized, she led the Five Elements Army using reconnaissance puppets and the All-Terrain Detection System. Her performance won the acceptance of Chen Rufeng, who had initially resisted serving under a younger clanswoman 235.

When Jiang Ji returned, Chen Duo survived his Setting Sun Divine Arrow and ordered her army to retreat while she held him off. Additional enemy legions blocked their escape, but A Huo arrived to reinforce them. Chen Duo subsequently captured Jiang Kechang, sealed his dantian, and returned with the victorious forces and their spoils 238 239 240 242.

Service to the Chen Kingdom

Chen Duo continued defending key positions during the beast tide and fighting Otherworldly Demons as Chen Village developed into the Chen Kingdom. At Moon Capital Pass, her liquid metal armor made her particularly effective against the enemy’s King Level combatants 287 301 363.

Chen Mu later declined to increase her military authority because her judgment had not kept pace with her strength. Instead, he entrusted her with establishing an organization that would recruit powerful Emperor Level experts as Attendants. She understood the reduction in military responsibility but welcomed work that offered greater freedom and opportunities to challenge strong opponents 402.

Before leaving the continent, Chen Mu gave Chen Duo and A Huo emergency control chips capable of shutting down Taichu. During the later fall of the imperial capital, Chen Duo protested abandoning the million soldiers in the outer city, then boarded the Saint Fighter after vowing revenge against the Heavenly Puppet Sect 425 507.

Netherworld, bloodline altar, and Buddhist diplomacy

Chen Duo accompanied Chen Mu to the Netherworld, where Mingye used the Netherworld Pearl to remove the Heavenly Dao’s rejection of her. After two days of sightseeing, she began cultivating with suitable saint-grade medicinal herbs; a Saint Level breakthrough was expected, though not confirmed in that account 552 553.

After absorbing super bloodline essence, she remained inside the clan’s altar for more than eighteen shichen—longer than Chen Zihu or Chen Hongjie. Chen Mu suspected this exceptional duration was connected to Chen Haoran’s identity as the new generation’s God-Slayer, but the passage does not establish her eventual awakening results 630.

She later helped arrange Netherworld support for the Chen Kingdom and traveled with A Huo to establish relations with the True Esoteric Buddhist Sect. Her criticism of ascetic withdrawal drew the attention of its Supreme Living Buddha, who recognized her mastery of the Sixteen-Foot Golden Body 674 704 706 707.

At Source Wood City, Chen Duo fought alongside Little White Fox, Ghost Sword Saint, and Elder Ming to keep Ancestor Tianhen away from the defensive array’s foundations. She was the strongest of the four, having greatly improved her golden body techniques under Master Yuanqing 743.

Appearance

  • Childhood: At nine, wears finely crafted wooden-framed glasses, two braids, and leather gauntlets 25.
  • Pavilion years: Described as petite, light-footed, sweet-looking, and endearingly innocent; wears a water-green dress in one appearance 150.
  • Young adulthood: At seventeen, has become a graceful young woman. Years of military command later give her a more mature, capable bearing 210 301.
  • Battle attire: Uses silver liquid metal armor that transforms into blades, firearms, and cannons 363.

Personality

Chen Duo is cheerful, affectionate, and direct, remaining lively around her family even after becoming steadier through military service. Childhood hardship makes her practical: she initially loses interest in the Floating Light and Fleeting Shadow Disc when Chen Mu describes it as entertainment without practical value. She nevertheless develops expensive habits, including buying attractive clothes and accessories that she soon discards 91 96 210.

She is deeply protective of people close to her. She shelters Mingye despite threats of arrest, remains attentive to her sworn sister Chen Ju, and becomes visibly distressed when A Huo appears to have died. Her compassion also has an uncompromising side: after encountering the aftermath of a massacre, she develops a lasting hatred of horse bandits 55 132 181 329.

Chen Duo loves fighting but has little attachment to military authority. Although capable of bold operational planning, she can be impatient and underestimate political consequences. Chen Mu attributes some of her carefree judgment to his own overprotection; she accepts reassignment rather than clinging to command 235 402.

She is willing to revise her views. After initially undervaluing Central Land’s customs, she embraces their reasoning and becomes particularly sensitive to bad manners. Her criticism of Buddhist asceticism likewise centers on a concrete concern: powerful cultivators pursuing personal liberation while doing little for others 55 63 706.
