Appearance

  • Original appearance: Purple hair, green eyes, fair skin, red lips, and a sweet, gentle voice 10.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears fitted qipaos, including purple and green designs. Fang Lin connects this preference to her legs becoming a serpent’s tail during Martial Soul Possession 14 20.
  • Martial Soul Possession: Develops pale green scales, vertically slit pupils, and a long serpent’s tail in place of her legs. By the later team-training matches, the scales on her neck and forearms have faded considerably 13 35.
  • Changes after poison treatment: Her purple hair gradually returns to black after her serpent poison is transferred into a Soul Bone. Disliking the change, she dyes it green; her previously noticeable sickly-sweet scent also fades 41 44.

Personality

Dugu Yan initially enjoys teasing others with flirtatious remarks and deliberately unsettling displays of poison. She makes Fang Lin dizzy after catching him staring at her, then jokes that his late-night visit must be a confession. Her playfulness can turn sharply into suspicion when she believes someone threatens her or her family’s poison techniques 11 12 13.

She is proud of her strength and reluctant to concede defeat. During training, she attempts to outlast Fang Lin rather than surrender after he penetrates her poison mist. After reaching rank 38, she confidently promises to protect him in the Soul Fighting Arena 35 50.

Her enthusiasm for competition is less consistent than her confidence. She admits that she attends the arena because of Qin Ming’s assignment, sometimes refuses Fang Lin’s requests to compete, and stops going once they obtain their Silver Soul Badges. Yu Feng also observes that she becomes less habitually flirtatious over time 39 41 44 46.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison

An innate poison of the Dugu bloodline that merges with a Soul Master’s Soul Power and grows stronger as cultivation advances 13.

  • Imbues her Soul Skills with serpent poison 13.
  • Enables her to deny opponents access to large portions of an arena, repeatedly forcing them toward the edge 10 40.
  • Can be recalled into her body after release 10.
  • Accumulates within its wielder and can cause backlash; Dugu Yan’s early scent and hair color are associated with her inability to fully control it 11 13.

Second Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorous Blue Poison

A poisonous mist with both offensive and supportive applications 13 35.

  • Against enemies: Corrodes Soul Power and causes dizziness and paralysis when inhaled. Dugu Yan states that even a Soul Elder would be reduced to seventy or eighty percent of their strength 13.
  • Poisoning risk: Its mixture with her innate serpent poison can become fatal without an antidote within two hours; Soul Ancestor-level Soul Power or above can suppress it 13.
  • On allies: Numbs pain and increases defense, as demonstrated when she envelops the Shi Brothers in the mist 35.

Third Soul Skill: Purple Poison Mist

Her thousand-year Third Soul Ring produces a spreading purple mist containing potent Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison; the skill’s name is not supplied 35 40.

  • Corrodes both Soul Power and flesh. Dugu Yan warns opponents that poisoning can become fatal within one hour 40.
  • Obscures vision and forces opponents to retreat as the mist advances 40.
  • Requires more Soul Power to cover a larger platform 40.
  • Also obstructs her own side’s view, allowing an incoming ice-arrow barrage to approach before she and Fang Lin notice it 40.

Martial Soul Possession and Close-Range Combat

Possession transforms her lower body into a serpent’s tail while retaining close-range offensive options 13 35.

  • Attacks with powerful tail lashes 35.
  • Projects an eerie green beam from her eyes that slows Fang Lin during their training match 35.
  • Uses two Soul Skills on herself while attempting to stall Fang Lin, though their names and exact effects are not specified 35.

Weaknesses and Restrictions

  • Burning realgar wine: Fang Lin disperses her poison mist using realgar and strong liquor ignited together. He cautions that this countermeasure applies to incompletely developed poison and may cease working once her cultivation reaches Soul Ancestor or higher 13.
  • Wind-type opponents: Wind can disperse or blow back her poison mist, making these opponents particularly unfavorable matchups 39.
  • Long-range area attacks: Lin Qing’s ice-arrow barrage exposes her vulnerability to wide-area attacks launched through the mist 40 41.
  • Nonlethal arena rules: She must detoxify poisoned opponents and control her dosage carefully enough to avoid killing them before treatment is possible 39.

Equipment & Items

  • Thousand-year right leg Soul Bone — Obtained by Dugu Bo after he failed to find a better bone despite a month-long hunt. Dugu Yan successfully transfers her accumulated serpent venom into it, preventing the poison from continuing to harm her body 13 27.
  • Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid — Chosen for its cultivation-speed benefits after Dugu Bo questions whether Aromatic Silk Beauty would suit her Martial Soul. She consumes it and advances from rank 32 to rank 38 49 50.
  • Silver Soul Badge — Earned through her two-person partnership with Fang Lin 46.

History

Academy Tournament and Poison Treatment

Dugu Yan enters Heaven Dou Royal Academy as one of its specially recruited talents. During the academy tournament, she defeats a level-29 spear-wielding opponent by spreading poison across the platform until he has no safe route of attack and withdraws. She subsequently reaches the top eight 9 10 12.

Before their scheduled quarterfinal, Fang Lin privately demonstrates that burning realgar wine can neutralize her current poison. He also explains that transferring her accumulated venom into a Soul Bone could resolve her developing backlash. Concerned about her grandfather’s condition, she promises that Dugu Bo will not harm Fang Lin and will owe him a favor if the advice proves true. She does not appear for the quarterfinal, allowing Fang Lin to advance by default 13 14.

Dugu Bo searches for a suitable Soul Bone, rejecting an available thousand-year bone at first. After failing to obtain an older one, he gives her a thousand-year right leg bone, and the venom transfer succeeds 19 27.

Imperial Fighting Team Training

Under Qin Ming, Dugu Yan participates in endurance and coordination exercises with the developing Imperial Fighting Team. During the weighted mountain run, Fang Lin takes her stones so she can help Ye Lingling; she and Yu Feng alternate supporting their exhausted teammate until the group completes the exercise 22 24 25.

She also helps maintain contact between Fang Lin and the academy during his stay with Dugu Bo. After seeing that Fang Lin has survived refining the ice-and-fire herbs, she offers to explain his whereabouts to Qin Ming and the education committee 28.

By Fang Lin’s return, she has become the first of the team to reach Soul Elder. In subsequent group matches, Fang Lin defeats her despite her poison and counterattacks. His apparent immunity surprises her; he conceals its true source by claiming to rely mainly on Dugu Bo’s antidote pills 31 35 36.

Blade and Jade Phosphorous

Qin Ming assigns Dugu Yan to earn a Silver Soul Badge within a year. Fang Lin proposes a partnership because he can fight inside her poison mist and cover its weakness against wind-type opponents. She accepts and chooses the team name Blade and Jade Phosphorous 39.

Their first documented match is against Lin Qing and Yang Chen. Dugu Yan’s advancing mist pressures the pair into withdrawing, while Fang Lin protects her from Lin Qing’s ice-arrow barrage. They later obtain Silver Soul Badges, after which Dugu Yan refuses further arena visits 40 46.

Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid

Dugu Yan brings Fang Lin to her clan’s ancestral grounds after Dugu Bo emerges from seclusion, then persuades her grandfather to take them to the herb garden. Fang Lin initially suggests Aromatic Silk Beauty as a possible route to Martial Soul evolution, but Dugu Bo doubts its compatibility and recommends safer alternatives 46 47 48 49.

She selects the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid for its ability to accelerate cultivation. After refining it, she reaches rank 38 and feels confident enough to promise Fang Lin protection in future Soul Fights. No Martial Soul evolution is documented 49 50.

Relationships

  • Dugu Bo — Her doting grandfather and protector. He hunts for her Soul Bone, oversees her treatment, and helps choose her Immortal Herb 19 27 49.
  • Fang Lin — Teammate, poison-treatment adviser, and partner in Blade and Jade Phosphorous. Dugu Bo considers allowing them to be together if Fang Lin reaches level 45 before twenty, but no romantic relationship is established 13 30 39.
  • Qin Ming — Her team instructor, responsible for combat training, endurance exercises, and the Silver Soul Badge assignment 24 34 39.
  • Yu Feng — A teammate and frequent companion who calls her “Sister Yan.” They share shopping trips and cooperate in helping Ye Lingling during endurance training 20 25 41.

  • Yu Tianheng — A teammate she formerly enjoyed teasing and initially considered partnering with for two-person Soul Fights. She also buffs him during a training match against Fang Lin 36 39 41.
