Background / History

Family and Early Training

Fang Lin retains memories of a previous life and knowledge of the original story's characters and events. At his awakening, he recognizes his saber's resemblance to Tang horizontal sabers from that previous life; later, he uses his foreknowledge to identify opportunities involving Dugu Bo and the Immortal Herbs 1 13.

His father began teaching him saber techniques roughly two years before his Martial Soul awakening. After Fang Lin awakened with level-five Innate Soul Power, Fang Yuanqiao gave him his personally modified meditation method and planned an education at Heaven Dou Royal Academy 1 2.

Recognizing that his weak physique restricted cultivation, Fang Lin secretly consumed his father's Whale Gelatin. He then maintained a demanding routine of physical conditioning, saber practice, and meditation until reaching level ten. After obtaining his first Soul Ring, he spent ten months sparring with his father and experienced Soul Grandmasters before leaving home 3 5 6.

Heaven Dou Royal Academy

Fang Lin entered the academy through Marquis Klein's recommendation, secured by his father's past military service. Its Mimicry Training Grounds and credit exchanges gave him access to cultivation facilities, body-tempering resources, and Soul Ring opportunities beyond those available at home 2 6 7.

He supplemented academy training with Soul Arena matches for money and practical experience. Before meeting Yu Feng, he had completed eighty-nine matches over two years, recording fifty-six wins and thirty-three losses 8.

During the academy tournament, he defeated Niu Heng, Yang Yue, Gong Qing, and finally Yu Tianheng, becoming champion and receiving 5,000 academy credits. Qin Ming regarded his performance as an example of what ordinary Soul Masters could achieve through diligence and technique 10 11 16 17 18.

Imperial Fighting Team and Dugu Bo

Fang Lin initially intended to reach Soul Ancestor and return to Soto City rather than travel with Niu Heng and Yang Yue. His foreknowledge of a future war between the Heaven Dou Empire and Spirit Hall made his comparatively unimportant hometown seem a safer place to settle 16.

He nevertheless joined the academy's regular team after Qin Ming offered to arrange treatment for his physical and meridian damage. During team endurance training, Fang Lin recognized the exercise's emphasis on cooperation and carried extra weight for struggling teammates 21 24.

After demonstrating a countermeasure to Dugu Yan's poison, Fang Lin offered advice on her family's venom backlash to obtain an opportunity to negotiate with Dugu Bo. At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, he refined two Immortal Herbs and acquired the Ice and Fire Golden Body. In exchange for using his blood in Dugu Bo's antidote, he remained at the herb garden for six months, practicing and cultivating 13 28 29 31.

Return and Later Cultivation

After returning to the academy at level thirty, Fang Lin persuaded Qin Ming to investigate a four-thousand-year third Soul Ring. Its successful absorption raised him to level thirty-three, strengthened his Martial Soul, and gave him a decisive advantage during subsequent team sparring 31 33 34 36.

He also pursued treatment for his father's hidden injuries. Qin Ming arranged an appointment with the Healing System Soul Saint Ye Xinhua, whose treatment left Fang Lin with an implied personal debt rather than a straightforward academy transaction 26 42 43 44.

To fund further cultivation, Fang Lin undertook a guard assignment at Xue Beng's residence. After nearly three months, he left with a hundred Gold Soul Coins, later purchased five-thousand-year Whale Rubber, and returned to Dugu Bo's grounds. His latest documented cultivation involves consuming Full Moon Wearing Autumn Dew to strengthen his spiritual power 39 46 47 49.

Appearance

  • Hair and features: Black-haired, with sharply defined facial features 7.
  • Build: Broad-framed and muscular; already over one and a half meters tall at his level-ten breakthrough and over 1.7 meters by level twenty-eight 3 7.
  • After ice-and-fire tempering: Becomes taller and sturdier, with somewhat fairer skin following the expulsion of impurities 43.
  • Martial Soul: Initially a straight, approximately 1.1-meter iron saber with a long hilt and cold, snowy gleam. Later develops flowing red-and-blue patterns and a faint dark-gold blade 1 29 34.

Personality

Fang Lin is exceptionally disciplined. Yu Feng reports scarcely seeing him outside meals because he is usually cultivating, practicing his saber, or participating in Soul Fights. Even on the morning of a tournament semifinal, he follows his normal training routine 11 16.

His ambition is practical rather than indiscriminately heroic. He seeks stronger rings, better resources, and an improved Martial Soul, but also plans around future danger and remains wary of factional commitments. He declines recruitment by both Spirit Hall and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect while leaving open the possibility of joining a faction once circumstances become clearer 16 38.

He is resourceful and occasionally mischievous: he prepares a realgar-wine countermeasure against Dugu Yan and misdirects his teammates about the source of his rapid physical improvement. His concern for family and teammates remains genuine, shown by his efforts to obtain treatment for his father and his willingness to shoulder others' training loads 10 24 26 42.

Fang Lin also resists saying things merely to please powerful people. When Ye Xinhua questions him about Ye Lingling, he gives an honest assessment rather than disparaging her to curry favor 44.

Abilities & Skills

Iron Saber Martial Soul

An ordinary Tool Martial Soul at awakening, distinguished early by its unusually great weight and low Soul Power consumption. After Immortal Herb tempering and his third Soul Ring, Qin Ming assesses it as an entirely new Martial Soul of at least high quality 2 34.

  • Initially weighs more than seven or eight times his usual practice saber, making premature training with it a wrist-injury risk 2.
  • Develops red-and-blue flowing-cloud patterns during his stay at the herb garden 29.
  • Its improved weight, hardness, and offensive power reduce his earlier dependence on armor penetration to threaten stronger Martial Souls 33 34.
  • Fang Lin suspects the ice-and-fire Immortal Herbs contributed more to its improvement than Qin Ming realizes 34.

First Soul Skill: Hell Power

A physical enhancement skill that increases strength and speed by fifty percent and improves resistance to abnormal states 5 18.

  • Covers the saber and body in a dark sheen, making his muscles appear firmer 5.
  • Supports rapid advances, forceful saber exchanges, and escape from physical restraints 11 16.
  • Comes from his first yellow Soul Ring 5.

Second Soul Skill: Shadow Blade

An armor-breaking skill obtained from a 780-year-old Shadow Poison Bee 10.

  • Grants a hundred-percent armor-penetration boost and an armor-corroding property 10 18.
  • Lengthens and sharpens the saber while turning its blade pitch-black 10.
  • Breaks through Niu Heng's defenses and later shatters the Shi Brothers' combined shield 10 35.

Third Soul Skill: Profound Nether Overlord Body Saber

A four-thousand-year Soul Skill that provides a hundred-percent boost to all attributes and places Fang Lin and his saber in an Overlord Body state 33 34 36.

  • Strengthens the saber's weight, hardness, and explosive power; its dark-gold light also forms an armor-like layer 33 34.
  • Allows the saber to grow larger as he supplies additional Soul Power 34.
  • At nearly seventy percent of his Soul Power investment, the saber approaches five meters long and becomes too heavy for him to hold 34.
  • Fang Lin compares its enlargement effect to a low-end Tool Soul Avatar, but it is not his seventh-ring Martial Soul Avatar 34.

Ice and Fire Golden Body

Acquired by consuming the octagonal mysterious ice grass and infernal delicate apricot, then refining them in the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 28.

  • Grants immunity to poison, ice, and fire while greatly improving his physique 28 29.
  • Makes his blood a key ingredient in treating Dugu Bo's venom backlash 28.
  • Does not immediately raise his Soul Power, although his subsequent cultivation becomes much faster 29 39.
  • Lets him move safely through Dugu Yan's poison fog 35 39.
  • Is not a Soul Skill named “Invincible Golden Body.” Fang Lin shouts that name during training to disguise his poison immunity; Qin Ming notices that he has not activated his third ring 35 36.

Saber Technique and Soul Power Control

Fang Lin's fighting style emphasizes precise interception, seizing the initiative, and maintaining pressure through chained strikes 6 8 18.

  • Momentum-building combinations: Learns to link blows and use the force of blocked attacks rather than treating each strike separately 6.
  • Consecutive slashes: Uses Soul Power to stimulate muscles and meridians for brief explosive bursts. Initially manages nine slashes, leaving his arm sore 5.
  • Defensive precision: Intercepts Yu Feng's swift attacks and withstands Yu Tianheng's close-range offense through basic parries and footwork 8 18.
  • Limitations: Overusing explosive techniques strains his body and can damage his meridians and cultivation foundation 5 21.

Medicinal Knowledge and Body Tempering

Fang Lin combines remembered information with practical experimentation to improve his body and prepare for stronger Soul Rings 3 13 39 49.

  • Burning realgar wine disperses Dugu Yan's less advanced Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison, but may fail against stronger poison 13.
  • Thousand-Year Whale Rubber increases his strength and explosive power by thirty-five percent, with additional defensive and recovery benefits 21.
  • Five-thousand-year Whale Rubber unblocks his meridians and improves circulation efficiency by more than ten percent; its physical improvement is less than twenty percent as returns diminish 47.
  • Identifies spiritual power as the remaining obstacle to attempting a ten-thousand-year fourth Soul Ring and seeks Full Moon Wearing Autumn Dew accordingly 39 49.
  • His herb knowledge is incomplete: he initially does not know how to safely harvest or use several plants in Dugu Bo's garden 28.
  • Dugu Bo warns him not to consume the singular velvet sky chrysanthemum before level fifty because its medicinal power could interfere with the herbs already in his body 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage Soul Tool ring — A silver ring with one cubic meter of space, given by Fang Yuanqiao upon academy enrollment. Initially contains a hundred Gold Soul Coins and food packed by his mother 6.
  • Practice sabers — Uses an unsharpened iron saber before awakening and a lighter, seven-to-eight-jin replacement while adapting to his Martial Soul's weight 1 2.
  • Iron Essence inner armor and bracers — Orders protective and training equipment through the academy; later requests heavier armor after outgrowing his fifty-kilogram set 19 37.
  • Weighted limb wraps — Animal-hide pieces fitted with iron blocks and tied to his arms and calves for saber practice 29.
  • Body-tempering potions — Purchases Bone Strength Body-Tempering Medicinal Potions with academy credits 19.
  • Soul Crystals — Exchanges credits for two despite learning that they accelerate Soul Power cultivation at the cost of making later breakthroughs harder; consumption is not documented 19.
  • Soul Fighter badge — Holds an Iron Soul Badge during his early arena career; later pursues Silver Soul Fighter rank with Dugu Yan 8 44.

Relationships

  • Fang Yuanqiao — Father and first teacher. Supplies his meditation method, saber instruction, academy recommendation, and Storage Soul Tool. Fang Lin later secures treatment for his hidden injuries 2 5 6 42 43.
  • Qiao Rong — Mother and a healing Soul Master whose earnings provide most of the family's savings. Supports his training and treats injuries during his early sparring 1 6.
  • Qin Ming — Team instructor and cultivation adviser. Recruits Fang Lin, arranges treatment, tests his ring-absorption claims, and accompanies him for his third Soul Ring 21 31 32 33 42.
  • Sun Buyu — Academy teacher who permits his tournament-related leave on the condition that he reach at least the top eight 9.
  • Yu Feng — Roommate, teammate, and frequent companion in Heaven Dou City. Their friendship includes sparring, teasing, and Fang Lin helping with his training burden 8 24 31 41.
  • Yu Tianheng — Tournament opponent and later teammate and sparring partner. Fang Lin defeats him for the championship and continues testing his growth against him 18 26 36.
  • Dugu Yan — Teammate and partner in Blade and Jade Phosphorous. His immunity complements her poison fog and helps cover her weakness against wind-type opponents. No romantic relationship is confirmed 30 39.
  • Dugu Bo — Provider of access to the herb garden and recipient of Fang Lin's antidote assistance. Later considers him as a potential husband for a female descendant because his poison immunity might prevent hereditary venom backlash 28 30.
  • Ye Lingling — Healing teammate whom he assists during endurance training and consults about treating his father. He later defends his honest assessment of her character before Ye Xinhua 24 26 44.
  • Niu Heng and Yang Yue — Tournament opponents turned companions. Invite him to travel the continent after graduation, but he declines 10 11 16.
  • Ye Xinhua — Ye Lingling's aunt and the Soul Saint who treats Fang Yuanqiao. Her refusal of the original payment leaves an implied favor for Fang Lin to repay 42 44.
