Background

Dugu Bo’s original Martial Soul was the Jade Phosphorous Serpent. Its evolution into the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor enabled him to reach Titled Douluo, an achievement he feared Dugu Yan might not otherwise match 29 49.

Despite his mastery of poison, he endured serpent-venom backlash for more than twenty years. The Dugu bloodline’s poison also endangered its descendants: children inherited toxins, and those with weaker constitutions struggled to survive. By the time Fang Lin visited the clan, most surviving members were ordinary people supporting themselves through farming and medicinal-herb cultivation 13 28 47.

Dugu Bo had spent nearly twenty years in the valley containing the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well without recognizing the extraordinary effects of its Immortal Herbs 48.

Appearance

  • Face and hair: An elderly man with sunken cheeks, emerald-green hair and beard, and intensely bright eyes 27.
  • Clothing: Wears a plain gray robe and dark green, snakeskin-patterned boots 27 29.
  • Changes during treatment: The green coloration of his hair gradually fades as the poison in his body improves 29.

Personality

Dugu Bo is blunt, suspicious, and quick to turn threatening. During his first meeting with Fang Lin, he demands a direct explanation rather than prolonged negotiation; at the herb garden, he uses oppressive Soul Power when questioning whether two deadly herbs can truly become an antidote 27.

His granddaughter is his clearest soft spot. His expression softens at the mention of Dugu Yan, and concern for her future drives his search for a Soul Bone, interest in Immortal Herbs, and attempts to arrange a suitable marriage 27 29 30.

His attitude toward Fang Lin becomes more casual once treatment proves effective, but familiarity does not stop him from bargaining aggressively. He also views Fang Lin’s poison-resistant constitution as a means of preserving the Dugu bloodline 29 48 49.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Poison

Dugu Bo possesses the advanced serpent poison associated with his evolved Martial Soul 13 29.

  • The Dugu bloodline’s innate poison merges into Soul Power and grows more potent with cultivation 13.
  • His poison remains present in his Soul Power even after most accumulated bodily toxins have been removed 48.
  • Its backlash tormented him for more than twenty years before Fang Lin’s treatment offered relief 28.
  • Directly consuming the paired ice-and-fire herbs would neutralize his poison but also dissolve his poison cultivation, making an indirect treatment necessary 27.

Pharmacology and Poison Preparation

Dugu Bo is renowned for poison arts and skilled in pharmacology, though he initially lacks knowledge of the Immortal Herbs’ specific effects 31 48.

  • Uses plants from his garden to prepare medicines and poisons 29.
  • Produces antidote pills against Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison 36.
  • Recognizes that incompatible medicinal powers can interfere inside a cultivator’s meridians 49.
  • Warns Fang Lin to wait until level fifty before taking Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum, because the remaining ice-and-fire medicinal power would clash with it 49.
  • Rejects the assumption that an herb which evolved a gemstone Martial Soul would necessarily produce the same result for Dugu Yan 49.

Soul Power Control and Perception

His Soul Power supports precise manipulation, intimidation, and private communication 27 28 48.

  • Exerts invisible pressure strong enough to overwhelm Fang Lin’s senses 27.
  • Retrieves objects and moves people through projected force 28 49.
  • Sends concentrated voice transmissions that Dugu Yan cannot hear 48.
  • Channels Soul Power into his eyes to examine Fang Lin’s altered Martial Soul 29.
  • Detects Fang Lin’s improved cultivation on meeting him again 47.

Movement and Physical Strength

As a Titled Douluo, Dugu Bo can remain aloft and walk through the air using Soul Power 31.

  • Carries Fang Lin between Heaven Dou Academy and the herb valley 27 30.
  • Transports both Fang Lin and Dugu Yan to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 48.
  • Kills a Thousand-Year Soul Beast without poison or visible external wounds 29.
  • Despite his cultivation, does not dare enter the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well recklessly 28 30.

Possessions & Territory

  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well herb garden — His private medicinal garden, extending roughly thirty zhang around the spring. Immortal-grade herbs grow nearest the well, with other rare herbs and poisonous plants farther out 29.
  • Immortal Herb collection — Includes Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum, Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, and other plants later identified by Fang Lin 28 48.
  • Jade Phosphorus Seven-Absolute Flowers — Poisonous flowers repeatedly consumed by Fang Lin; Dugu Bo eventually complains that Fang Lin is exhausting his supply 30.
  • Antidote pills — Initially gives these to Fang Lin for protection during outings, then stops after discovering his resistance to serpent poison 36.
  • Cultivation cabins — Wooden cabins near the medicinal garden’s exit where he ordinarily cultivates in seclusion 50.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and the focus of his protective affection. He obtains a Soul Bone to contain her poison and helps select an Immortal Herb to improve her future prospects 27 29 49.
  • Fang Lin — His treatment provider and an increasingly familiar junior, but also a bargaining opponent. Dugu Bo supplies cultivation access and food while seeking Fang Lin’s knowledge and considering his constitution valuable to the clan 28 29 48 49.
  • Yu Tianheng — Fang Lin names him as Dugu Yan’s possible romantic partner when deflecting Dugu Bo’s matchmaking. Dugu Bo remains unconvinced but intends to investigate rather than continue arguing 30.
  • Dugu Clan members — He rarely visits the clan settlement except when children of the appropriate age awaken Soul Power. His concern over the dwindling bloodline motivates plans for future descendants 47 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Securing a Soul Bone for Dugu Yan

After learning Fang Lin’s proposed method of containing serpent poison, Dugu Bo spends a month in the Star Dou Great Forest seeking a suitable Soul Bone. He kills dozens of Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts without obtaining one and ultimately gives Dugu Yan a Thousand-Year right leg bone. Her poison is successfully transferred into it 19 27.

Before returning, he asks Dugu Yan to watch Fang Lin so that the boy does not disappear 19.

Treatment at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Dugu Bo brings Fang Lin to his herb garden after hearing that two opposing ice-and-fire herbs could treat his condition. Following Fang Lin’s instructions, he harvests the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot, then allows Fang Lin to attempt refining them in the well 27 28.

Once Fang Lin survives, Dugu Bo keeps him in the valley for half a year. A few drops of Fang Lin’s blood each day serve as the principal medicinal ingredient, allowing treatment without directly destroying Dugu Bo’s poison cultivation 28.

Most of the accumulated poison is eventually purged. Treatment ends when Fang Lin’s blood loses much of its usefulness as the herbs’ power becomes integrated into his foundation and Martial Soul 30.

Matchmaking and Bloodline Preservation

Dugu Bo first proposes his grandniece as a match for Fang Lin, then considers accepting him as Dugu Yan’s partner if he reaches level forty-five before twenty. Fang Lin deflects the proposal by raising her possible relationship with Yu Tianheng 30.

His interest extends beyond marriage: Fang Lin’s resistance to serpent poison offers a potential answer to the clan’s inherited toxins. On Fang Lin’s later visit, Dugu Bo reveals that he had considered keeping him at the ancestral grounds to father descendants with Dugu Clan members 30 48.

Immortal Herb Negotiations

After emerging from seclusion, Dugu Bo receives Fang Lin at the clan’s ancestral grounds and immediately suspects another request for herbs. At the garden, Fang Lin explains the plants’ properties, revealing the value of resources Dugu Bo had possessed for years without fully understanding 46 47 48.

Dugu Bo agrees to let Fang Lin take one more herb for Dugu Yan’s sake, but warns against incompatible medicinal combinations. He favors a safer cultivation-enhancing herb for his granddaughter over speculative Martial Soul evolution; she chooses Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, while he consumes Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma 49.
