Background / History

Childhood and the Demon Continent

Eris grew up as a young lady of House Boreas in Roa. Ghislaine was teaching her lethal swordsmanship by the time she was eight, while Rudeus became her tutor in reading, writing, magic, and arithmetic 1 6 38 39.

Following the Teleportation Incident, she spent three years traveling with Rudeus and Rujierd. Initially frightened enough that she could barely hold her sword steady, she developed into the group’s close-range fighter under Rujierd’s instruction. Fighting beside Rudeus taught her to respond instinctively to his warnings and coordinate her attacks with his magic 1 3 4.

At the Red Dragon’s Lower Jaw, Eris charged the Dragon God to protect Rudeus but was knocked aside with one hand. Seeing Rudeus with a hole through his chest convinced her that she needed far greater strength to protect him 1.

Choosing to Stay

Back in the ruins of Roa, Eris learned from Alphonse that her grandfather Sauros and both parents were dead, and that House Notos wanted her as a concubine. She rejected that future and chose Rudeus 1.

Although she considered leaving to become stronger, she decided that abandoning his side would contradict her promise to protect him. She told him she would grow stronger alongside him rather than train alone at the Sword Sanctum. Ghislaine departed after accepting her decision 1 2.

When Rujierd left to search for the scattered Superd and clear their reputation, he told Eris that she was better suited to protecting Rudeus than he was. Eris and Rudeus continued together, searching Adventurers’ Guild notices for his family 4.

Searching for Rudeus’s Family

In Zant Port, Rudeus found Paul’s notice directing him to Milishion. Eris insisted on accompanying him, declaring that his family was hers as well. The pair completed eleven commissions in four days to fund their passage aboard the Tailwind 6 7.

In Millis, Eris pushed to rescue five abducted beastfolk children despite the danger of unauthorized fighting. With Rudeus blocking escape routes, she defeated the traffickers and brought the children out to await the guards 10 11.

Rudeus introduced her to Paul as his fiancée. Paul thanked her for bringing him back safely, while Norn quickly took an interest in learning swordsmanship from her 13 14.

The Teleportation Labyrinth

Eris joined Paul’s expedition to rescue Zenith, serving in the vanguard beside him. Before departure, Norn gave her a handmade protective charm, Paul entrusted her with his spare sword, and she accepted Rudeus’s marriage proposal 17 18.

Her contribution extended beyond fighting: she studied labyrinth maps, selected a route around known teleportation traps, and helped organize the party’s positions. During the descent, she fought the Giant Desert Spider and destroyed four gargoyles in approximately fifteen seconds before the party reached Lilia 20 22 23 24.

Against the Hydra, Eris severed heads in coordination with the others. When three heads prepared to attack Zenith’s crystal, she raced ahead and drove Paul’s spare sword into one head’s basal joint, redirecting its beam into the rock wall. Paul shielded her from the Hydra’s tail and lost his left arm; Rudeus lost his left hand during the same battle 26 27.

After Zenith was freed, Eris apologized for Rudeus’s injury. He reassured her and thanked her for saving Paul. She also felt Zenith’s fingers curl faintly despite Zenith’s otherwise unresponsive condition 28.

Marriage and Life in Sharia

Eris settled with Rudeus and his family in Sharia, initially hesitating at the threshold until he assured her that the house was her home too. They later married; on the second day of their marriage, they bought furniture and a wooden practice sword together 31 35.

She began teaching Norn Rujierd’s practical swordsmanship alongside Paul’s lessons in Sword God Style fundamentals. When Rudeus reunited with Sylphiette, Eris invited his childhood friend home for a meal 38 45 47.

Although not a university student, Eris used the Ranoa University of Magic’s training ground. She defeated Pursena in one strike and later beat a succession of student challengers. Her performance attracted Isolte, whose offer of Water God Style instruction she accepted 39 42 50.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, crimson-red hair, sometimes tied in a ponytail while at home 2 38.
  • Eyes: Red 19.
  • Hands: Callused from years of sword practice, with an old desert-scorpion scar between her right thumb and forefinger 1.
  • Clothing: Accustomed to armor and trousers after years of travel; noticeably uncomfortable shopping in a white dress after her marriage 35.
  • Habitual posture: Walks half a step ahead of Rudeus on his left, keeping her right hand near her sword hilt—a precaution taught by Rujierd 6 10.

Personality

Eris is blunt, quick-tempered, and comfortable answering provocation with force. She challenges Talhand when he doubts her Sword Saint strength and admits that she enjoys fighting. Her approach to training prioritizes techniques that work in lethal combat over formal practice alone 17 38 50.

Rujierd’s instruction gives her a clearer distinction between violence and protection: violence serves oneself, while protection serves others. She is especially fierce toward people who harm children, but accepts Rudeus’s intervention when killing or further injury would endanger their situation 3 11.

Her affection is often easier to recognize in actions than words. She reassures Rudeus through embraces, carves a protective promise into his wand, and continues daily practice so that she can defend him. Romantic attention frequently leaves her embarrassed, even when she initiates it herself 1 6 9.

She becomes more considerate without losing her directness. Her careful labyrinth planning contrasts with her earlier impatience as a pupil, while her welcome to Sylphiette reflects a willingness to include the people important to Rudeus 20 45 47.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Eris combines Sword God Style techniques with the practical methods Rujierd taught her during their travels 38 42.

  • Arm Slash: A basic Sword God Style strike targeting the forearm. She uses it with a wooden sword to disarm Pursena in one move 42.
  • Whole-body striking: Generates force through her waist and shoulders, with the arms and sword following, rather than relying on arm strength alone 38.
  • Redirection and counters: Guides an opponent’s force around in an arc before striking from the side 38.
  • Precision against weak points: Targets joints and armor seams when an enemy’s outer defenses are too strong to cut directly 22 23 27.
  • Nonlethal control: Can subdue opponents with her sword’s back and hilt rather than its edge 3.
  • Limits: Recognizes that Sword Kings and Sword Emperors are far faster than she is; her current strength was also wholly insufficient against the Dragon God 1 5.

Combat Instincts and Coordination

  • Responds to Rudeus’s warnings with little conscious deliberation after extensive experience fighting together 3 8.
  • Reads an enemy’s physical preparation for an attack, dodging the Giant Desert Spider’s leg sweep as its muscles tense 23.
  • Coordinates close-range sword attacks with magical distraction, defensive barriers, and attacks that expose vulnerable areas 22 23 26.
  • Maintains daily sword practice, including basic draws, cuts, thrusts, and controlled swings 9 31.

Killing Intent

  • Uses Sword Saint–rank killing intent to stop Linia when she tries to flee the training ground 42.
  • Withdraws it afterward and helps Linia up, demonstrating deliberate control rather than an uncontrolled outburst 42.

Planning and Instruction

  • Studies labyrinth routes, marks known traps, and helps assign party positions before the expedition 20.
  • Teaches Norn practical swordsmanship and corrects her balance, wrist tension, and use of body movement 38.
  • Previously taught Minitona and Tersena the Human Language, as well as sword moves to Minitona 42.
  • Remains limited in general literacy and arithmetic; extended written notices are difficult for her, and her calculations are often wrong 1 6.
  • Can cook and wash clothes, but acknowledges that she does neither well 14.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nameless Sword — Given to her by Rudeus, who had received it from Roxy’s father, Rowin Migurdia. It has no special ability beyond its exceptionally hard material. Eris values its reliability and its connection to Rudeus 18 24.
  • Paul’s spare sword — Entrusted to her before the labyrinth expedition. She uses it to redirect the Hydra’s attack away from Zenith’s crystal 18 27.
  • Norn’s handmade charm — A crooked gray cotton pouch tied with red thread and embroidered with a flower. Eris wears it on her belt and privately considers it the best thing she has ever received 18.
  • Wooden practice sword — An ash sword with a slightly longer-than-usual blade and leather-wrapped grip, purchased by Rudeus after he notices her reluctance to put it down 35.

Relationships

  • Rudeus Greyrat — Former tutor, traveling partner, and husband. She chooses to remain beside him and regards protecting him as her responsibility; he describes their protection as mutual 1 2 17 35.
  • Rujierd — Traveling companion and practical combat mentor for three years. His lessons shape both her swordsmanship and her understanding of protection. She misses him after their separation 2 4 11 29 38.
  • Ghislaine — Childhood sword instructor. Eris discusses her decision to stay with Rudeus with her before Ghislaine leaves for the Sword Sanctum 2 38.
  • Paul Greyrat — Father-in-law and fellow vanguard fighter. He welcomes her into the family, gives her a spare sword, and shields her during the Hydra battle 13 17 18 27 35.
  • Norn Greyrat — Sister-in-law and pupil. Norn gives her a protective charm, and Eris later teaches her practical swordsmanship in afternoon lessons 18 38.
  • Roxy Migurdia — Fellow labyrinth party member. Roxy supports the claim that Eris is a Sword Saint when Talhand questions it 17.
  • Sylphiette — Rudeus’s childhood friend. Eris welcomes her into their home because someone important to Rudeus is welcome in her circle too 45 47.
  • Linia and Pursena — Older sisters of girls she knew in Doldia Village. They call her “Big Sis Eris” and watch her training-ground matches after experiencing her strength firsthand 42 50.
  • Isolte — Visiting Water God Style instructor who offers to teach her after observing her swordsmanship 50.
