Background / History

Early Life and Sect Admission

Chen Shuangbai is a visitor from another world whose memories of a previous life awakened three years before he entered the Jade Spring Sect. He discovered the Great Yin Dao Fruit in his sea of consciousness, where its moonlight gradually improved his memory, physique, and cultivation aptitude. His intellectual abilities earned him a reputation as a child prodigy in White Water City 2.

His parents had died before his introduction. Uncle Li, an old friend whose life they had saved, became his personal guard out of gratitude. At sixteen, Chen Shuangbai left his household to seek admission to the Jade Spring Sect, asking Uncle Li to protect his grandfather rather than fight over the lineage’s holdings. He promised to return in five years 1.

Establishing Himself in the Outer Sect

After initially failing to sense Qi, Chen Shuangbai used the Dao Fruit to transform the sect’s introductory cultivation method into one tailored to himself. He passed the admission trial and chose to build his strength steadily rather than resent his outer-sect position 2 3.

To support his cultivation, he accepted a garden-guardian assignment at Jade Dew Hall. The moonlight drawn down by his cultivation improved the spirit medicines under his care, and his final Jade Marrow Orchid harvest earned nearly a thousand Merit Points. He subsequently rented a cave abode on Lesser Yang Peak, leaving the communal disciples’ quarters 7 10 11.

Appearance

Chen Shuangbai has a tall, slender build, a clear and handsome face, and an upright bearing. At seventeen, his features retain some youthfulness, while his movements are compared to fresh bamboo and a resting crane 5 10.

  • Eyes: Black, with faint blue around their outer edges; cultivation sometimes produces a rippling, jade-like moonlight within them 1 5 23.
  • Hair: Black, worn bound behind his head with a jade hairpin 5.
  • Clothing: A plain pine-and-frost-colored gauze Daoist robe over a black cross-collared inner garment, secured with a Xiangfei bamboo buckle 5.
  • Fragrance: Acquired a faint orchid scent after spending an extended period tending spirit medicines 8.
  • Later bearing: His friends describe an increasingly warm, gentle presence underlain by calmness 49.

Personality

Chen Shuangbai is courteous, patient, and attentive to practical details. He carefully memorizes sect rules, treats senior disciples respectfully, and recognizes that knowledge and preparation improve his chances of survival. His politeness is sometimes deliberately strategic: after noticing Zhang Yin’s fondness for praise, he freely flatters the Book Spirit to make their exchanges easier 1 4 21.

His caution does not prevent decisive action. He avoids approaching Demon Beasts far beyond his strength, questions gifts disproportionate to his contribution, and suspects a trap when a cave-abode discovery seems too convenient. In combat, however, he remains composed and takes openings without hesitation 17 20 39 42 43.

He is ambitious but capable of correcting himself. When Fu Qianlan and He Qi warn that studying both alchemy and talisman making would undermine his cultivation, he recognizes his own conceit and thanks them. His ultimate goal is to attain the Dao and live forever, rather than settle for a sect post or a mortal cultivation lineage 23 27.

Abilities & Skills

Great Yin Dao Fruit

A moon-like presence in his sea of consciousness that cycles through lunar phases. Its illumination enhances his memory, physique, comprehension, and Spirit Root aptitude 2 19 26.

  • Method evolution: Uses existing manuals as foundations to produce methods suited to his physique and cultivation path 3 13.
  • Energy requirement: Evolving the Jade Spring Qi Ingestion Method consumed three years of accumulated energy. Moonlight slowly replenishes it 3.
  • Observed limitation: Its initial improvement of his Spirit Root aptitude stopped before he entered the sect 2.
  • Associated manifestation: The Jade Platform Lotus Marsh appeared after he investigated the Cold Spring Sword through the Dao Fruit 13 14.

Moon-Worshipping Clear Illumination Method

His foundational cultivation method, evolved from the Jade Spring Qi Ingestion Method. It follows the twelve monthly lunar phases and cultivates exceptionally pure Law Power while nourishing body and spirit 3 7.

  • Produces frost-natured power that strengthens his water techniques 5.
  • Improves his understanding of water- and frost-aspect arts 7.
  • Draws down pure moonlight that accelerates and improves nearby spirit medicines 7 8.
  • At the Fourth Layer of Qi Refinement, provides at least thirty to forty percent more Law Power than the ordinary Jade Spring Qi Ingestion Method 30.
  • Can manifest imagery associated with lunar deities, including the dragon-headed god of Zouyue 34 35.

Moonlight Spirit-Nourishing Instruction

A spirit-refining method evolved from Han Ji’s Heavenly Frost Heart-Cleansing Record. It allows him to develop spiritual perception beyond that of ordinary Qi Refining disciples 13 14 25.

  • Pseudo-Divine Sense: Initially extends approximately ten zhang around him; useful for locating concealed Demon Beasts, but not yet fully tempered Divine Sense 15.
  • Artifact control: Helps him master the unstable Flowing Cloud Flying Pouch 36.
  • Divided attention: Can control three Law Artifacts without apparent strain, making two-sword control feasible 37.

Cold Spring Guidance

An introductory water-shaping technique that he develops into a flexible offensive and defensive art 5.

  • Forms chains, needles, screens, ice cones, nets, and trapping ice spikes 5 9 15.
  • His frost-natured power produces harder, freezing chains; a casual lash is forty to fifty percent stronger than the original technique 5.
  • Creates a heavy water curtain capable of briefly resisting a stronger opponent’s poisonous flying wheel 43.
  • Can mask the scent of poisoned bait with ice 15.
  • An attempted fusion with Fair Hands Divide the Stars failed and nearly injured his hand meridians 11.

Spirit-Appraising Pupil

A spiritual-eye technique used to examine Spiritual Qi, unusual Qi, and his own body. Repeated refinement with moonlit dew develops its basic Qi Discernment into Qi-Discerning Synesthesia 5.

  • Partially reveals the paths of power within objects and their weak points 5.
  • Helps anticipate movement by observing an opponent’s Law Power or Qi and Blood 5.
  • Detects hidden pests and examines developing life inside a Demon Beast egg 8 20.
  • Assists in identifying pills 25.

Water and Wood Pure Splendor Incantation

A support art encompassing six incantations, with applications in healing, purification, battlefield control, and enhancement. Its direct offensive power is limited 35 36.

  • Flower Bloom Incantation: Replenishes some Law Power and supports continued fighting 42 43.
  • Sweet Dew Incantation: Used to heal his companions during the cave-abode battle 42.
  • Duckweed Water Incantation: Used to begin purifying poison from an Evil Hunting Hall disciple 50.

Swordsmanship and Power Enhancement

Technique Applications and limitations
Spring Rain and Flowering Wood Sword Instruction Combines water and wood. Ideally requires one sword bearing both attributes, or two complementary swords; Cold Spring alone leaves its execution unbalanced 37.
Misty Willows Brush the Waves Redirects incoming attacks through supple, layered sword force. Diverted simultaneous saber and flying-wheel attacks 42.
Green Shoots Break Through Snow Concentrates force into a single piercing strike. His early proficiency was insufficient to kill the twin-saber cultivator outright 42.
Listening to the Rain in a Lotus Boat Forms overlapping lotus leaves of Sword Qi into a protective boat. With Lu Zhiyuan’s talisman, shielded three people from poisonous vines for several breaths 44.
Azure Billows Layered Waves Instruction Layers water-aspect Law Power into a charged strike, up to nine layers. Its effect is halved in environments rich in fire and metal Qi 35 36.

Pill Refining and Medicine Cultivation

Chen Shuangbai studies under Yi Chongyue and learns the Jade Spring Water Method Pill Refining Technique. Large-scale production of the Jade Spring Five Pills eventually provides substantial Merit Points for his cultivation 27 30.

  • Fair Hands Divide the Stars: A secret method discovered in the Book of Tending Medicines. He reaches its first stage, Spirit Drawing, gaining unusually nimble hands and quicker thoughts; its later stages are Deft Blossoms and Star Division 11 27.
  • Medicine knowledge: Identifies medicinal properties, prepares thoroughly for garden work, and earns high assessments for his crops 6 8 10.
  • Moon Soul True Water: Recognized as a means of improving pill quality, helping motivate his choice of alchemy over talisman making 27.
  • Current scope: Still refining basic pills when he recognizes the need to advance his skills further 38.

Other Techniques

  • Obscuring Mist Method: Conceals his figure and creates confusing illusions 5 35.
  • Wind Control Technique: Lightens his body and permits brief travel on the breeze 14.
  • Artifact Control Technique: Enables remote control of the Cold Spring Sword; reaches beginner proficiency after a month of practice 13 14.
  • Formation use: Replaces damaged entrance flags and establishes a Lesser Illusory Light Formation during the cave-abode expedition 39.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Cold Spring Sword — Mid-grade offensive Law Artifact purchased from Mo Xuan for three hundred low-grade Spirit Stones, partly funded by a loan from He Qi. Its chilling power freezes what it touches, and it concealed Han Ji’s remnant soul 12 13 14.
  • Flowing Cloud Flying Pouch — High-grade flying Law Artifact resembling a white cloud. Exceptionally fast but unstable; offers cloud-and-mist concealment and improved adaptability in water- and mist-aspected environments 32 36.
  • Jade Platform Lotus Marsh — A manifestation accompanying the Dao Fruit that can take physical form. Transforms suitable spiritual water into Moon Soul True Water 14 47.
  • Moon Soul True Water — Cleanses, purifies, awakens, and nourishes. Restores a nearly lifeless Frostleaf Red Maple seed; the Dao Fruit confirms it can also assist his cultivation 47 48.
  • Life-Accepting Gourd — Absorbs water- and wood-attribute vital Qi and preserves medicinal properties. Its spiritual liquid supplies the Lotus Marsh’s first documented production of three drops of Moon Soul True Water 47.
  • Jade Spring disciple’s jade token — Identifies him to sect formations, holds Merit Points, and enables communication with registered contacts 20 23 38 45.
  • Listening to the Waves Notes and Green Wood Pill Explanation — Expedition gains containing cultivation insights, alchemical knowledge, and two incomplete pill formulas 46 47.
  • Commissioned water-and-wood banner — Du Zifeng’s proposed protective artifact, designed to gather Spirit Power during cultivation and grow stronger with its owner. Chen Shuangbai accepts installment payments and responsibility for finding its crucial Jia Wood Spirit Heart 37.
  • Expedition supplies — Carries recovery pills, injury medicine, protective and movement talismans, and a map when preparing to hunt in Rime Forest 14.

Relationships

  • Grandfather — Family member he asks Uncle Li to protect while he cultivates; Chen Shuangbai promises to return after five years 1.
  • Uncle Li — Personal guard and longtime friend of his late parents, serving the household in repayment for a life-saving debt 1.
  • He Qi — Close friend and fellow disciple. Lends him funds for Cold Spring and helps dissuade him from overcommitting to multiple cultivation trades 12 14 27.

  • Feiguang — Bonded Snow-Plumed Eagle companion. Chen Shuangbai chooses a comparatively gentle Blood Pact and raises him attentively; their closeness is compared to that of blood relatives 23 30.
  • Zhang Yin — Book Spirit who advises him on beast raising, Law Techniques, and swordsmanship. Chen Shuangbai cultivates their rapport through praise and respectful address 21 35 36.
  • Daoist Lingxiu — Early cultivation instructor whose monthly lectures continue to provide Chen Shuangbai with new insights 2 50.

  • Han Ji — Remnant soul awakened through Cold Spring. Gives him the Heavenly Frost Heart-Cleansing Record in exchange for a promise to pass it to her descendants if he encounters them 13.
  • Ding Chengyu and Lu Xin — Inner disciples who share Demon Beast materials and insist that he accept the egg that becomes his companion. Ding recognizes his significance through memories from a long dream 17 20.
  • Lu Zhiyuan and Jiang Xunzhen — Expedition companions whom he heals and protects during the Heart-Eroding Stronghold battle; both come to admire his ability and humility 38 42 44 45.
  • Yan Qi — Evil Hunting Hall disciple who seeks contact after recognizing his support incantation, then asks him to treat a poisoned colleague 45 50.
  • Du Zifeng — Artifact refiner commissioned to design his growing protective banner 37.
