Background and History

Lineage and Early Career

Yi Chongyue’s lineage descends from the second disciple of the Jade Spring Sect’s founding patriarch, an accomplished Alchemist. The branch traditionally accepted a disciple talented in alchemy to preserve that inheritance. Yi himself was his master’s second disciple, between senior brother Shi Yubai and junior sister Peng Yu 191 192 503.

His cultivation aptitude was upper-middle rather than exceptional. Despite dividing his attention between cultivation and alchemy, his cultivation speed remained comparable to Shi Yubai’s. He continued cultivating diligently in accordance with his late master’s final instructions 333 503.

Teaching the Outer Disciples

As an instructor from Heavenly Spring Peak, Yi taught the fundamentals of alchemy and demonstrated the Jade Spring Sect’s water-method technique. He rewarded attentive students with Clear Water Heart-Clearing Pills; Chen Shuangbai received an additional pill for answering correctly 25.

After Chen Shuangbai and Fan Yunsong completed their first successful Water Cloud Pill refinements, Yi assessed their yields, quality, and technical weaknesses. He provided Detailed Explanation of Fire Control, revealed the sect’s hidden annotations on Fair Hands Divide the Stars, and explained that alchemical instruction had been concealed in the Book of Tending Medicines to identify promising outer disciples 29.

Yi continued supporting Chen beyond the classroom. He strongly recommended him for Jade Dew Hall membership and later carried his report on the Compassionate Light Temple’s crimes to Shi Yubai, seeking the sect’s backing on his behalf 68 117.

Accepting Chen Shuangbai

Yi offered to accept Chen as his disciple if he placed among the top five in the Martial Edge Trial. When Chen instead won the trial, Yi assumed the opportunity had passed: Chen could now seek a Golden Core master, and Yi felt unable to develop his talents in swordsmanship and the Yin Thunder Method 167 190.

Chen nevertheless honored their agreement, citing Yi’s previous guidance and protection. Yi registered him as an inner-sect disciple and held a formal apprenticeship ceremony witnessed by Shi Yubai and Peng Yu. Chen became both his eldest disciple and the first disciple of Deer Deep Waters Peak 190 191.

Yi gave Chen access to the peak’s treasury and arranged alchemy instruction every seven days. Their first extended discussion addressed pill extraction, fire adjustment, and the harmonization of medicinal properties, continuing into the following night 192 193.

Preparing His Disciple’s Foundation

Yi helped exchange Chen’s Profound Yin Crystal Marrow for suitable Foundation Establishment materials and gathered additional resources matched to his water-primary, wood-secondary Spirit Roots. The five materials assembled for the Azure Mystery Gathered Verdure Foundation Establishment Ritual Artifact included three second-tier resources 229 233 235.

During Chen’s seclusion, Yi refrained from entering seclusion himself for two years so that he could respond to any danger. When the breakthrough drew in enormous quantities of primordial Qi, he crushed Spirit Stones and spiritual materials to replenish it. Chen’s success moved him to tears 237.

Afterward, Yi checked his condition and warned him not to disclose the details of his newly acquired Divine Ability 238.

Spring-Returning Mountain

Yi traveled to Spring-Returning Mountain ostensibly to celebrate Gongye Chun’s birthday, but also to help resolve its growing succession dispute. Gongye Chun had been a close friend of Yi’s late master, who had participated in the alchemical alliance from which the mountain’s organization developed 331 333.

Yi carried two jade rings associated with an earlier exploration of a blessed land. Following the recovery of its treasures, Gongye Chun entrusted the Star-Nurturing Divine Pills and other ancient sealed items to him 336 353.

After Gongye Chun joined the Jade Spring Sect, Yi and Yan Nanlai frequently studied alchemy and cultivation under him. These lessons improved Yi’s craft and eventually helped him reach the third tier 357 359 497.

Core Formation and Hall Leadership

Chen later repaid Yi’s care with resources and instruction. He brought him Sea Heart Jade Marrow Ganoderma suited to his Spirit Roots, supplied cultivation notes, and asked him to postpone a Golden Core attempt until his somewhat unstable foundation could be strengthened 303 460 497.

After obtaining the Azure Yi Mystic Cauldron, Chen arranged for Yi to receive treasure liquid from its first batch. He then stayed on Deer Deep Waters Peak to impart his insights into Golden Core cultivation, also teaching Shi Yubai and Peng Yu 497 502 503.

Yi successfully formed a fourth-grade Golden Core and was promoted from deputy hall master to hall master of Jade Dew Hall. Yan Nanlai’s betrayal shocked him deeply after decades of working together. With Gongye Chun increasingly unable to refine pills, Yi also assumed a heavier share of the sect’s alchemical work 550.

Later Service and Farewell

Yi and Gongye Chun worked day and night to complete a precious pill for Chen. Exhausted enough to nearly collapse, Yi still insisted that Ding Chengyu deliver it immediately rather than delay his disciple’s cultivation 577 582.

Before Gongye Chun died, he charged Liu Wenyan with continuing their alchemical lineage alongside Yi 603.

When Chen returned as a Nascent Soul cultivator, Yi initially attempted to bow in recognition of his higher realm; Chen stopped him. At their later farewell, Yi instead calmly accepted Chen’s bow as his master. He acknowledged having long suspected Chen’s secrets but explained that he had deliberately respected his reasons for keeping them private 659 891.

Appearance

  • Bearing: Graceful and handsome, resembling a mortal scholar or teacher more than an Alchemist 25.
  • Clothing: Introduced wearing a moon-white scholar’s robe 25.
  • Age and features: Described as middle-aged; later passages mention a beard 234 238 243.
  • Voice: Gentle and unhurried, with an assurance that makes his explanations persuasive 25.

Personality

Yi is an encouraging teacher who readily praises talented disciples while identifying specific weaknesses in their work. He enjoys resolving questions, but insists that alchemy remain an aid to cultivation rather than displace it 29 193.

Although outsiders regard him as stern and rigid, he is affectionate and openly emotional with those close to him. He weeps at Chen’s Foundation Establishment breakthrough and excitedly announces that he has taught a Golden Core cultivator when Chen advances again 237 439 445.

He takes pride rather than offense when his disciple surpasses him, declaring that Chen’s achievements bring him greater glory. His protectiveness nevertheless makes Chen’s dangerous encounters difficult for him to hear, particularly the confrontation with three late-Golden-Core demon kings 391 497.

Yi respects personal boundaries. He notices signs of Chen’s unusual opportunities and abilities without demanding an explanation, ultimately stating that his disciple must have reasons for keeping his secrets 166 233 891.

Abilities and Skills

Jade Spring Water-Method Alchemy

Yi specializes in the Jade Spring Sect’s inherited water-method alchemy, using spiritually charged water to process medicinal ingredients 25 190.

  • Produces relatively pure, gentle pills with little pill poison, especially suitable for water- and wood-attribute cultivators 25.
  • Extracts medicinal properties and removes impurities before the medicinal liquid enters the furnace 190.
  • Still requires a pill furnace and careful fire control; heat management is a recognized weakness of the method 25 29.
  • Possesses decades of practical experience in harmonizing ingredients, adjusting pill fire, and drawing out completed pills 193.

Pill Appraisal and Formula Analysis

  • Assesses pill yield, quality, impurity content, and the effectiveness of individual refining steps 29.
  • Identifies Spirit-Nurturing Pearls as a possible means of balancing the Green Wood Transforming Rain Pill’s ingredients 264.
  • Recognizes the Aging-Delay Pill’s usefulness in extending a cultivator’s period of peak strength 324.
  • Evaluates valuable ingredients and their applications, including the Crimson Fire Crow corpse and rare resources suitable for Nascent Soul cultivation 577 640.

Cultivation Instruction

  • Explains the distinctions between lower, middle, and higher vehicle Foundation Establishment, including foundation phenomena and potential Divine Abilities 234.
  • Selects breakthrough materials according to a disciple’s Spirit Roots and cultivation needs 233 235.
  • Uses Divine Sense and Law Power to examine physical abnormalities, recognizing the twins’ dangerously excessive innate Yin and Yang Qi 439.
  • Has comparatively few offensive Divine Abilities and Law Techniques because of his dedication to alchemy 192 193.

Equipment and Resources

  • Green Jade Mountain — A protective Spirit Artifact bestowed by his master, shaped like a miniature jade landscape. Yi offered it as Chen’s apprenticeship gift but retained it after Peng Yu intervened 192.
  • Pill furnace — Used with his water-method technique to complete pill refinement 190.
  • Deer Deep Waters Peak treasury — Contains spiritual materials, pills, alchemical texts, handwritten notes, and insights into water-element cultivation, formations, and restrictions. Yi entrusted its crystal key to Chen 192.
  • Two blessed-land jade rings — Held in connection with the agreement made by his master and four fellow explorers to revisit an ancient blessed land 336.
  • Sea Heart Jade Marrow Ganoderma — A cultivation resource brought by Chen and suited to Yi’s water and earth Spirit Roots 303.
  • Azure Yi Treasure Liquid — Received priority access before attempting Golden Core formation 502 550.

Relationships

  • Chen Shuangbai — Eldest and foremost personal disciple. Their relationship develops from classroom instruction into a deeply affectionate bond, with Chen later arranging resources and instruction for Yi’s own Golden Core breakthrough 25 191 497 891.
  • Tang Yu — Second disciple, naturally suited to alchemy. Progresses rapidly under Yi’s instruction and helps manage Deer Deep Waters Peak during his seclusion 391 497 546.
  • Shi Yubai — Senior martial brother; witnesses Chen’s apprenticeship and later forms a Golden Core alongside Yi 191 550.
  • Peng Yu — Junior martial sister; witnesses Chen’s apprenticeship and helps watch over his Foundation Establishment breakthrough 191 237.
  • Gongye Chun — Friend of Yi’s late master and a senior whom Yi addresses as martial uncle. Becomes an important source of alchemical and cultivation guidance 331 333 359.
  • Yan Nanlai — Longtime colleague and fellow Alchemist. His betrayal leaves Yi struggling to reconcile their decades of cooperation with the harm he inflicted on the sect 303 550.
  • True Person Bo — Rewards Yi with a Star-Nurturing Divine Pill and cultivation guidance that improve his prospects of forming a core 359.
  • Wei Chengfeng — Formerly a close fellow disciple. Yi directed Chen to seek him out and vouched for Wei Mingdang’s admission to the inner sect 167 388.
  • Fan Yunsong — An outer disciple whose early alchemical talent Yi recognizes and supports alongside Chen’s 29.
  • Liu Wenyan — Entrusted by Gongye Chun with continuing the alchemical lineage together with Yi 603.
  • Chen Yazhen — Granddisciple. Yi obtained the supreme-grade Spirit Artifact Mystic Pure Cinnabar Moon Mirror from the sect treasury for her after her Foundation Establishment 692.
