Background / History
Marlene is a British witch who did not attend Hogwarts. Her first childhood burst of accidental magic made the objects around her fly; after studying magic, she developed more practiced control over that ability 42 109.
She accepted a teaching position at Hogwarts primarily to gain access to its extensive library. Despite that personal motive, she conscientiously carried out her responsibilities, including protecting students aboard the Hogwarts Express. She remained socially distant from the other professors, rarely attending their gatherings and maintaining no particularly close relationship even with Dumbledore 42 54.
Outside her teaching duties, Marlene spent much of her time reading or examining the castle. Madam Pince believed she was researching Hogwarts’ magical structure, although the results were unknown. Her other interests included goblin alchemy and Nicolas Flamel’s Philosopher’s Stone 54 81 99.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slender 52.
- Hair: Worn in an immaculate bun, sometimes with loose strands around her ears 173 212.
- Clothing: Often wears dark blue robes; she also wears black robes during the Hogwarts Express incident 54 81 173.
- Accessories: Carries a slender wand and wears a wristwatch 54 139.
Personality
Marlene is scholarly, reserved, and usually composed. She can return to an ordinary conversation immediately after performing exhausting, large-scale alchemy. Her composure does not extend to the destruction of expensive equipment: when Gori disables her mechanical birds, she cries out over the loss of her Galleons 42 54.
As a teacher, she is generous with knowledge and willing to assist students who cannot yet take her subject. Fred and George credit her with providing both guidance and materials for their inventions. She also insists on equivalent exchange, refusing to borrow Herman’s valuable notes without offering meaningful instruction in return 40 81.
Her teaching emphasizes strong magical foundations, careful observation, and practical creation rather than dependence on powerful equipment. She can sound impatient or cold, but also recognizes achievement and offers precise encouragement. She tells Herman that outstanding control does not replace the experience needed to understand materials 109 174 182.
Her attitude toward prohibited research is less consistent. She openly dismisses Ministry restrictions while encouraging Herman to study magical modification, but later condemns the same subject as a dangerous shortcut for someone his age 184 213.
Abilities & Skills
Alchemy
Marlene combines prepared devices, magical nodes, and geometric arrangements to produce effects beyond straightforward wand casting 54 80.
- Large-scale terrain alteration: Opens a huge, arched passage through the collapsed mountainside blocking the Hogwarts Express 54.
- Node-based casting: Uses cube-shaped tools as precisely placed nodes. She explicitly explains that clearing the mountain depended on preparation, not magical power alone 54 80.
- Technical expertise: Advises on magical components, material identification, energy conduction, and the construction of simple alchemical items 80 81 181.
- Wandmaking knowledge: Explains wandmaking as resonance between suitable wood and core material, while emphasizing the decades of experience required to reach Ollivander’s standard 80.
- Limit: Clearing the landslide almost completely drains her magical reserves, requiring a recovery potion afterward 54.
Alchemical Combat Devices
Her combat equipment can intercept enemies, establish barriers, and deliver coordinated attacks 41 139.
- Floating cubes: Fire white beams capable of reducing an approaching vampire to ash and weaving a protective net that injures vampires in blood-shadow form 41.
- Mechanical birds: Devour Gori’s bats and remove the ash interfering with her cube’s operation 42.
- Silver spheres: Destroy conjured bats, trace barriers, and establish a concealed network of nodes for chained explosions 139.
- Counters: Gori’s bat ash disrupts the cube’s light net, while his piercing sound attack disables the mechanical birds 42.
- Deployment limit: Once the vampires close in, she lacks time to summon additional creations and must rely on her wand 42.
Spellcasting and Object Control
Marlene possesses broad magical knowledge, though she describes herself as less proficient than Flitwick or McGonagall in their specialties 109.
- Object manipulation: Makes nearby workbench components rise, circle her, and return to their places, demonstrating a practiced form of her childhood accidental magic 109.
- Direct combat: Uses forceful magical bolts, explosive black light, and spreading flames against vampires and werewolves 42 140.
- Defensive magic: Creates translucent barriers that repel charging werewolves and seals gaps around a clearing with a net of light 140.
- Aerial movement: Flies along the mountainside and hovers while preparing the landslide-clearing array 52 54.
- Dissilio instruction: Teaches that the dismantling spell depends on understanding an object’s structure. Her methods include beginning with single materials, examining grain and cross sections, and keeping magical output continuous with breathing 174 181.
Magical Modification
Marlene identifies the modification of magical creatures and the transplantation of magical organs as branches of alchemy, including human alchemy 184.
- Offers Herman specialized instruction concerning his modified arm 184.
- Casts a black, snake-shaped spell into the arm to conceal its abnormality more effectively, particularly from Dumbledore. Herman also experiences an immediate improvement in its use 184.
- Later directs him to an annotated notebook containing information suited to strengthening the arm 213.
- Warns that attempting bodily modification without a solid alchemical foundation can be fatal 213.
Potion Use
- Magical recovery: Uses a pale blue potion to replenish her depleted magic after clearing the railway obstruction 54.
- Wound treatment: Applies a green potion that closes a wound on the sleeping three-headed dog within seconds, without waking it 102.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hogwarts Express Ambush
Marlene is the professor on duty when a sudden mountainside collapse blocks the railway. She brings the train to an emergency stop, sends a message to Hogwarts through the boiler’s Floo connection, and instructs Percy to organize the prefects and keep students from opening the windows 40 41.
She refuses to let Gori, leader of the Slaed vampire clan, board the train to search for a student. After her defenses repel the first attacks, Gori claims that Grindelwald supplied a prophecy concerning a child who could bring salvation or destruction to vampires, werewolves, and other dark creatures. Marlene decides the matter should wait for Dumbledore 41.
Gori subsequently counters her devices and nearly overwhelms her. Quirrell intervenes and holds the attackers back while she prepares the alchemical array that opens the blocked route. Severely exhausted afterward, she asks him to explain the delay to McGonagall before returning to the locomotive 42 43 54.
Teaching Herman
Herman first approaches Marlene in the library to ask about wandmaking. She recommends Basic Alchemical Material Identification and A Study of Magical Conductors and Carriers, then recognizes the goblin notebook he shows her as Kramer’s personal notes. In exchange for borrowing it, she offers a tailored study plan and answers to his questions 80 81.
Her instruction expands beyond alchemy. She encourages him to develop the repeatable magic that originated in his childhood accidental magic, an explanation that directly influences his subsequent practice. She also asks him to recommend talented students interested in becoming an alchemy apprentice 109 110.
She later arranges Wednesday consultations, teaches him how to improve Dissilio, and urges him to begin making his own creations. Despite holding the professorship, she states that no one has yet chosen to take Alchemy Class 174 175 181 182.
Philosopher’s Stone Defenses
Marlene contributes an experimental alchemical obstacle to the protections intended for the Philosopher’s Stone. She asks Quirrell whether it needs maintenance, only to learn that the professors’ obstacles have not yet been activated. Her personal interest lies in seeing Flamel’s masterpiece, even briefly 99.
She later treats the three-headed dog and escorts Neville and his companions away from the restricted area without deducting points. When Neville raises suspicions about Quirrell, she dismisses the concern on the grounds that he is a professor and repeatedly tells the students to trust the school’s arrangements 102.
Forbidden Forest Attacks
During a wave of bat attacks, Marlene recognizes that the enemies’ weak but frequent assaults resemble harassment rather than a decisive offensive. The absence of most werewolves and stronger vampires leads her to identify the attack as a feint 139.
After establishing concealed nodes, she detonates a chain of explosions around the clearing. She then holds the position alone while Quirrell follows Hagrid, using barriers, explosive spells, and fire against Greyback’s charging werewolves. When Quirrell returns, she is unharmed, with charred remains scattered across the ground 139 140 152.
Modified Arm and Conflicting Guidance
Marlene initially welcomes Herman’s interest in magical modification, praises his ambition, offers Friday-evening lessons, and conceals the abnormality in his arm. A later appointment is canceled because she is unavailable 184 189.
At their next meeting, she instead rebukes him for pursuing modification before establishing his foundations. Before he leaves, however, she directs him to a notebook she has annotated and renews the invitation to return the following Friday. Herman briefly sees a gem-like object in her palm during this exchange, but its identity and significance are not explained 213.
She also experiences an unexplained episode of pallor and temple pain during an earlier encounter. Herman attributes her discomfort and changes in manner to menstruation, but this remains his interpretation rather than a confirmed diagnosis 174.
