Background / History
Childhood and Education
Jiang Qingye grew up abroad with his maternal grandfather and returned to China for several years of secondary school. At No. 3 High School, he ranked first in his grade throughout all three years. He subsequently entered Imperial Capital University through a program requiring study abroad, earned a doctorate overseas, and returned to take over the family business 186 216.
His long periods overseas left him distant from Jiang Nan. After Jiang Qingye returned, his younger brother lived separately, rarely responded to him, and concentrated on entering the entertainment industry and pursuing Fu Jinchuan. Jiang Qingye observes that they have only become familiar with each other over the preceding few months 186.
Connection to Luo Hang
Luo Hang developed a crush on Jiang Qingye during high school, when he was still named Luo Yan. Jiang Qingye helped him when he was being bullied, but did not retain a clear memory of him. Luo Hang later tried to find out which university Jiang Qingye would attend, only to discover that his overseas studies were financially impossible to follow 213 220.
Jiang Qingye initially describes their first meeting as an encounter on a production set shortly after Luo Hang’s debut. He had invested in the production and gave Luo Hang his untouched coffee after noticing the young actor’s hands were red from the cold. At the time, Jiang Qingye had never been in a relationship and did not recognize Luo Hang’s feelings 154.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and apparently slender, with pronounced muscles, broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs 83 86.
- Face: Luminous peach-blossom eyes, thin lips, a prominent Adam’s apple, and defined collarbones 83.
- Clothing: Frequently wears tailored suits and satin shirts with several collar buttons undone. His outfits include a burgundy satin shirt, black suit trousers, and a silver-gray suit 32 83 208.
- Accessories: Wears a decorative silver ring on his little finger 186.
- Bearing: Usually languid and casually elegant, though his gaze can become sharply intimidating 85 186.
Personality
Jiang Qingye habitually speaks with a lazy drawl and an infuriating half-smile. His teasing can be cutting: he mocks Jiang Nan, threatens to post embarrassing photographs to get him out of bed, and uses the prospect of reclaiming spending money to recruit him as an assistant. His intimidating workplace reputation contrasts with his lack of authority over his mother, who readily scolds and smacks him for upsetting his brother 32 84 85.
Despite their constant quarrelling, he is protective of Jiang Nan. He notices when his brother becomes unusually polite, worries that his career may be going badly, and immediately asks whether Fu Jingzhou has bullied him when divorce is mentioned. He is prepared to handle their parents and the company’s directors rather than make Jiang Nan remain married for business reasons 117 119.
His relationship with Luo Hang exposes his difficulty communicating affection. He can be cold and verbally cruel, yet also spends heavily on Luo Hang, cooks for him, and sacrifices business opportunities for his sake. The extras reveal that he wants an equal relationship but expects Luo Hang to understand intentions he has never expressed. Recognizing this failure prompts him to become more openly attentive and finally confess his feelings 86 154 212 218 219.
