Journey to Nuoding

Xiao Wu’s mother had taken human form and was later killed. Following her example, Xiao Wu transformed because she had heard that doing so offered a chance to become stronger. She never met her father 6 7.

After leaving the Star Dou Great Forest, she learned that Nuoding City was remote and joined a caravan heading there, paying her fare with a fur robe she had found. During a village stop, she participated in a Spirit Hall awakening ceremony. As none of the village’s other children possessed Soul Power, its chief offered her the village’s work-study quota. She accepted because attending the academy would place her near the similarly ranked Soul Masters needed for her recovery 7.

Dorm Seven

At Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, Ling Yu approached Xiao Wu after noticing that she had brought no bedding. Unfamiliar with money and Soul Master registration, she accepted his offer to lend her the purchase price. On returning to Dorm Seven, she accepted its rule that newcomers must acknowledge the leader or fight, then defeated Tang San 2 3.

She later defeated Xiao Chenyu, the leader of the noble students. As a result, he arranged for others to perform the work-study students’ duties. By then, she had also acquired a hundred-year Soul Ring and registered as a Soul Master 4.

Discovery of Her Identity

During a holiday visit to Holy Soul Village, Ling Yu privately revealed that he knew Xiao Wu was a transformed hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast. He warned her that Tang San’s father was Tang Hao, a Titled Douluo, and claimed that Tang Hao had been watching her. Although initially terrified that Ling Yu intended to kill her, she came to trust his warning 6 7.

Xiao Wu refused to flee immediately because her disappearance might endanger Ling Yu. Believing that Tang Hao intended to reserve her as a future Soul Ring for Tang San, she reasoned that she still had time to escape. Ling Yu suggested using a future trip to the Star Dou Great Forest as an opportunity 7.

Ling Yu subsequently told her that Tang Hao’s wife had been a transformed hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor who sacrificed herself to him. He urged Xiao Wu not to antagonize Tang San, who knew little of the situation. Xiao Wu became unusually withdrawn after returning to school, though she gradually resumed her playful behavior 8 9.

Seeking an External Soul Ring

Ling Yu challenged Xiao Wu’s assumption that she should condense her own early Soul Rings, suggesting that externally obtained rings could provide new abilities and bloodlines. She initially rejected killing Soul Beasts, but eventually asked him to accompany her to the Soul Hunting Forest 7 9.

The pair joined Lin Lei’s Azure Wolf Soul Hunting Group under a month-long work agreement. Xiao Wu agreed to protect the party while seeking a suitable dying Soul Beast. Although watching the hunters kill and skin beasts distressed her, she refused Ling Yu’s offer to abandon the attempt 9 10.

More than ten days later, the group encountered a wounded Pufferfish and Golden Crocodile locked in a potentially fatal fight. The hunters brought them ashore and guided Xiao Wu and their client in delivering knife wounds. Xiao Wu absorbed her second ring without complications; afterward, she confirmed that her Soul Beast presence had faded slightly 10.

After Ling Yu’s Departure

On the return journey, Ling Yu announced that he would seek his second ring in the Frozen Forest and pursue admission to Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Xiao Wu wanted to accompany him but feared that Tang Hao would pursue her and endanger everyone. She instead asked whether Ling Yu would be safe and quietly accepted their separation 11.

Less than a year later, news that Ling Yu had become Viscount Nuoding reached the academy. Xiao Wu was overjoyed to learn that he was alive and had succeeded, though she tried to conceal her feelings from the other students. She remained at Nuoding, where she continued sparring with Tang San 16 20.

Xiao Wu is playful, proud, and eager to fight. She readily accepts Dorm Seven’s challenge rule, seeks out newly advanced classmates for spars, and complains when Tang San evades rather than meeting her head-on. Praise from Ling Yu visibly lifts her spirits 2 3 5 20.

Her sympathy for Soul Beasts places her at odds with ordinary Soul Master practices. She questions why advancement requires killing them and distinguishes predation for food from hunting for Soul Rings. Even after deciding to obtain an external ring, she struggles to watch beasts being killed and butchered 3 9 10.

Beneath her carefree behavior, Xiao Wu carries grief over her mother and fear for her own safety. Her loyalty can outweigh that fear: she refuses an immediate escape if it might implicate Ling Yu, then lets him leave without her rather than risk drawing Tang Hao after him 7 9 11.
