Background / History

Reincarnation and Holy Soul Village

Ling Yu died of illness in his previous life and reincarnated with his memories intact. Previously hospitalized shortly after beginning school, he used rehabilitation exercises he remembered to strengthen his new body before Martial Soul awakening. Recognizing the Douluo Continent, he hoped to pursue cultivation, godhood, and eternal life, but feared that his unknown parentage would leave him without innate Soul Power 1 15.

Old Jack found him as an abandoned infant carrying only an iron tag engraved with his name. Raised in Holy Soul Village, Ling Yu helped with farmwork and regarded Old Jack’s care as more important than his unknown biological origins. Before awakening, he unsuccessfully tried to befriend Tang San in hopes of gaining access to the Mysterious Heaven Skill 1 6.

Nuoding Academy and Xiao Wu

At Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, Ling Yu entered Dorm Seven as a work-study student. He avoided fighting Wang Sheng for leadership, helped Xiao Wu buy bedding, and began searching the library for information about his unfamiliar Martial Soul 2 3.

His preparation persuaded Director Su to support his request for a hundred-year first Soul Ring. After the headmaster weakened a Spirit-Devouring Bat, Ling Yu killed it and absorbed its ring. His new scouting ability immediately improved the school party’s hunting efficiency. He subsequently declined Ma Xiunuo’s invitation to become an exclusive Spirit Hall Soul Master 4 5.

Ling Yu initially considered moving to an intermediate academy but stayed at Nuoding to save money and apply directly to an advanced academy later. He also worried that his growing closeness to Xiao Wu had changed her relationship with Tang San and potentially endangered her under Tang Hao’s watch 6.

During a holiday visit to Holy Soul Village, he privately revealed that he knew Xiao Wu was a transformed hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast. He offered to help her return to the Star Dou Great Forest and expressed an interest in learning self-condensed Soul Rings to change the cultivation system. Xiao Wu refused to leave because she feared Tang Hao might retaliate against him 7.

Independent Journey and Imperial Patronage

After helping Xiao Wu seek her second ring, Ling Yu left Nuoding to pursue his own second ring and admission to Heaven Dou Royal Academy. He bought whale rubber in Vast Sea City, strengthened his body, and earned money as a core member of the Holy Scorpion Soul Hunting Group. At Winter City’s Spirit Hall, he posted a twelve-hundred-gold-coin commission for a roughly thousand-year Ice Silkworm 9 10 11 12.

His purple second ring made ordinary public cultivation risky without a powerful backer. Rather than approach Xue Qinghe directly, he sought an audience with Emperor Xue Ye, intending to balance imperial authority against the crown prince’s influence. He presented whale rubber preparation as the explanation for his unusually strong second ring 12 13.

Ling Yu became Viscount Nuoding, received a residence and Su Yao’s protection, and entered Heaven Dou Royal Academy with private accommodation and three research laboratories arranged by Xue Qinghe. Holy Soul Village was also exempted from taxes. The academy publicly introduced him as the successful first test subject of the Heaven Dou Secret Medicine 14 15 16 18.

Academy Achievements and Soul Tool Research

Ling Yu placed first in the Heavenly Subtle Level year-end assessments, earning a Heaven Dou Badge and prize money. His results included perfect scores in Soul Beast Studies, General Knowledge, and Soul Master History, ninety in Basic Physical Techniques, and an excellent practical-combat grade 26.

To reproduce Soul Tool cores, he supplemented his blacksmithing experience with jewelry-carving lessons under Chen Ying. He organized his findings into a textbook draft and successfully recreated a working Soul Guidance Lamp—the first Soul Tool reproduced in generations—which he named the Snowlight Lamp 27 29 30 32.

His research attracted support from both Spirit Hall and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Through Qian Renxue, he supplied Spirit Hall with his draft, drawings, and a finished lamp. Ning Fengzhi provided discarded Soul Tools and rare metals in exchange for Ling Yu agreeing to teach a future qualified sect disciple 33 36.

Ye Lingling’s Third Ring and Dugu Bo’s Approach

After befriending Ye Lingling and Dugu Yan, Ling Yu tested his ability to accept their Soul Power. The experiment succeeded, but a broad appraisal overwhelmed him with information and required Ye Lingling’s healing 40 42.

He later accompanied Ye Lingling into Sunset Forest, where he identified a 2,222-year-old Glazed Deer with healing and purification traits. By channeling combined Soul Power into her and directing an overloaded Soul Tool dagger attack, he helped her obtain its ring. When she gained an eye-shaped External Soul Bone, he warned against removing it and joined the others in swearing secrecy 44 45 46.

After their return, Dugu Bo investigated Ling Yu’s imperial and sect connections before approaching him for an appraisal. He offered a generous reward but required a Martial Soul Oath of secrecy; the supplied account ends before the commission is resolved 50.

Appearance

  • Handsome features: Already noted for his looks as a young student; absorbing his first Soul Ring makes his features more striking and his skin more lustrous 4 5.
  • Lean, developed physique: Initially pale and thin, he becomes sturdy, straight-backed, and muscular through forging and cultivation without appearing bulky 9 12.
  • Accelerated physical growth: By ten, the bodily development caused by his Soul Rings gives him a build comparable to an ordinary adult 36.
  • Martial Soul Possession: Produces a mysterious presence rather than an obvious animal transformation 5 24.

Personality

Ling Yu is studious and intensely research-driven. He reads through meals, regularly takes notes, and becomes so absorbed in Soul Tools that Qian Renxue has to encourage him to take breaks. Despite his research opportunities, he refuses an exemption from school assessments because he considers the coursework important 3 23 24 25.

He combines caution with political calculation. He borrows Su Yuntao’s authority to deter a gatekeeper, politely declines premature faction membership, and deliberately seeks competing patrons rather than placing himself entirely under one power. Even with Su Yao guarding him, he initially keeps sensitive theories unwritten because he knows she is also observing him 2 5 12 19.

His treatment of others is considerate and respectful. He supports Xiao Wu despite knowing her identity, brings food to the grieving Tang San, and thanks craftsmen through both personal courtesy and gifts. After becoming wealthy, he thinks about improving Holy Soul Village rather than forcing Old Jack to leave the home he knows 7 8 15 29 32.

Abilities & Skills

Soul Martial Soul

His unusual Body Martial Soul develops his perception and mental faculties as it grows 2 23.

  • Enhances his senses, clarity of thought, and memory 2 23.
  • His cultivation accelerates around other Soul Masters; he suspects that comparable living beings may serve as a mimicry-training environment for his Martial Soul, but does not confirm the theory 3.

First Soul Skill: Spiritual Detection

Projects spiritual perception through his surroundings and permits focused examination of individual targets 5.

  • Range: Initially thirty meters, later fifty meters, and eventually more than one hundred meters after regular nourishment from eighty-thousand-year whale brain 5 9 41.
  • Combat: Tracks Soul Power circulation to anticipate attacks and locate vulnerabilities. With Ring Fusion, he identifies a Bear Martial Soul user’s weak shoulder joint and dislocates it 5 24.
  • Craftsmanship: Examines ore components and impurities, measures carving work, and studies Soul Tool array structures 8 29 39.
  • Limit: Concentrated observation increases both Soul Power and spiritual-power consumption; anticipating an attack does not guarantee that he can evade it indefinitely 5.

Second Soul Skill: Spiritual Appraisal

Consumes spiritual power and Soul Power to communicate with and perceive a thing’s true spirit, revealing its nature 12.

  • Identifies traits, attributes, and ages with single-year precision 12 42 44.
  • Helps select unusual Soul Beasts whose age would otherwise be difficult to judge 43 44.
  • Can examine precious Soul Tool materials, including those used in storage equipment 39.
  • Limits: Cost varies with the target’s grade. Appraising too many targets simultaneously floods his mind with information and can incapacitate him 12 42.

Ring Fusion

Connects his Soul Rings so that one ring’s energy can reinforce another Soul Skill 12 38.

  • Expands and sharpens Spiritual Detection 12 24.
  • Allows him to adapt to Soul Power received from Ye Lingling and Dugu Yan 42.
  • Enables practical transfer of combined Soul Power into Ye Lingling during the Glazed Deer hunt 45.
  • Limits: Energy conversion incurs losses. Foreign Soul Power initially causes discomfort, while simultaneous inputs place enough strain on his body to make him bleed before adaptation 38 42.

Soul Tool Engineering and Craftsmanship

Combines spiritual perception with forging, smelting, carving, and the study of discarded Soul Tools 8 29 35.

  • Reconstructs working array cores and documents their manufacturing processes 32 36.
  • Develops a scalar-based Soul Tool classification system using Blue Silver Grass as a measurement standard 33.
  • Distinguishes research Soul Engineers from theoretical designers whose knowledge exceeds their manufacturing-level Soul Power 35.
  • Explores energy-discharge weapons and possible higher-temperature or laser-like light sources; these remain proposals in the supplied account 33 37.

Heart Separation Control

Learns Ning Fengzhi’s technique to help divide his attention between simultaneous tasks 42.

  • Uses it during the experiment involving two incoming Soul Power sources.
  • Has not yet mastered the Three Aperture Governing Heart stage 42.

Cultivation and Soul Ring Research

  • Organizes theories concerning innate Soul Skill pools, compatibility, rejection, mutation, and the Limit Style 44.
  • Explains Soul Skill completeness in terms of Soul Ring age and Soul Beast bloodline 48.
  • Investigates self-condensed rings, Soul Power storage, and possible increases in Soul Ring age; none is established as an achieved personal ability in the supplied chapters 7 19 48.
