Replacement and Undercover Mission

The crown prince encountered by Ling Yu is Qian Renxue in disguise, not the original Xue Qinghe. She explicitly states that Xue Qinghe disappeared long ago, but gives no further account of his fate 12 22.

Qian Renxue undertook the Nation-Stealing Plan at Bibi Dong’s request. By the discussion of her approaching twentieth-year hairpin ceremony, she has been away from Spirit City for almost ten years 23.

Despite holding the crown prince’s position, she cannot freely control imperial affairs. Emperor Xue Ye retains a firm grip on the military and prevents her from interfering. His good health and the competing interests of the duchies lead her to expect many more years undercover 31.

Recruitment of Ling Yu

Xue Qinghe attends Ling Yu’s audience with Emperor Xue Ye and witnesses his thousand-year second Soul Ring. After Ling Yu explains whale rubber’s strengthening effects, the emperor tasks Qinghe with winning his allegiance and arranging Soul Saint protection 13 14.

Using this assignment, Qian Renxue places Ling Yu within Spirit Hall’s reach. As Xue Qinghe, she gives him a house near the crown prince’s residence, introduces the rank-seventy-two Soul Saint Su Yao as his bodyguard, and provides access tokens for imperial supplies and her residence. The household servants and Su Yao are secretly Spirit Hall personnel 14 15 22.

She also escorts Ling Yu to Heaven Dou Royal Academy and secures his research facilities. By donating three laboratories in her own name and retaining control until they are declared complete, she obtains private working space for him without directly overturning academy rules 16.

Revelation at the Crown Prince’s Banquet

At a private banquet, Xue Qinghe questions Ling Yu about Spirit Hall before revealing Qian Renxue’s true appearance. She confirms her identity by repeating words Ling Yu previously spoke to the crown prince 21.

With She Long and Ci Xue present, she pressures Ling Yu into joining Spirit Hall, threatening his life if he refuses. She then explains that his protection, servants, and laboratory security are already under her faction’s control. Nevertheless, she declines to demand a Martial Soul Oath, reasoning that resentment could compromise the reliability of his research 22.

Afterward, Ling Yu continues calling her “Brother Xue” publicly and uses “Sister Xue” in private 22 24.

Soul Tool Research and Court Politics

Qian Renxue uses both identities to support Ling Yu’s work: privately, she forwards research and requests to Spirit Hall; publicly, Xue Qinghe reports his achievements to the emperor. She sends a completed Soul Guidance Lamp and blueprints to Qian Daoliu before presenting another lamp and its plans to Xue Ye 33 34.

When the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect begins investigating Ling Yu, Xue Qinghe recommends cooperation rather than open confrontation. Xue Ye accepts the proposal and entrusts the arrangements to him 34.

The crown prince’s identity also creates personal complications. Xue Ye proposes an engagement with Dugu Yan, which Qian Renxue deeply resents. Xue Xing’s objection—that the Dugu family’s inherited Martial Soul might displace the imperial lineage’s—halts that proposal 31.

Growing Attachment to Ling Yu

Private meetings with Ling Yu give Qian Renxue more opportunities to appear as herself. She admits that before his arrival, she usually returned to her true appearance only inside the crown prince’s residence or a secret chamber 31.

Her attachment becomes increasingly difficult to separate from her public duties. While arranging Ye Lingling’s access to the Heaven Dou Secret Medicine, she struggles with her emotions and gives the girl a cold farewell. She subsequently avoids Ling Yu’s visits, citing government work 43.

During Ling Yu’s absence on a Soul Ring hunt, she repeatedly visits his empty laboratory and regrets avoiding him. His immediate visit upon returning reassures her, and she invites him to stay for dinner 49.

Her courtesy is often calculated. She deliberately waits for the academy committee to hesitate over Ling Yu’s laboratory request before offering a solution, ensuring that he understands the value of her favor. Behind the reassuring public manner, she is willing to use surveillance, intimidation, and lethal threats to secure Spirit Hall’s interests 16 22.

Her private interactions with Ling Yu become more playful and vulnerable. She takes him out when his routine becomes consumed by study, teases him about gifts and marriage, and increasingly prefers her true appearance in his company 24 36. Her grief over her father briefly breaks through this composure; afterward, she feels embarrassed about facing Ling Yu again 40 41.
