Background / History
Family and Upbringing
Bo Tingyuan grew up with his mother; his parents never married. His mother’s family owned an enormous business, and his upbringing imposed strict rules and intense pressure from childhood 25 26.
His father, Li Yun, had abandoned the Bo family inheritance to pursue his own career. After breaking with Old Master Bo, he relinquished the surname Bo and became a government official whose postings included consulates in France and elsewhere in Europe. Tingyuan’s relationship with him remained distant 17 25.
Tingyuan later returned to China and took responsibility for the Bo family business. As Old Master Bo’s health declined, he pushed increasing burdens onto his grandson. Relatives from collateral branches also sought a share of the family’s wealth; Li Yun described Tingyuan as better able than himself to withstand this environment 17 26.
Marriage to Wen Cishu
Bo Tingyuan first saw Wen Cishu on a busy Paris street. Li Yun recalled that Tingyuan developed an interest in Chinese culture around the time of Wen’s visit, a year before their wedding, and suspected that he had fallen in love at first sight 21 25.
They married at a French estate and had lived together for ten years by the opening events. Wen believed that Tingyuan had married him out of obligation arising from the previous generation’s entanglements, rather than love 1 3.
Tingyuan’s restraint reinforced that misunderstanding. They slept separately because he feared Wen’s health could not withstand greater intimacy, and he avoided discussing work because he worried it would upset him. Even the holiday roses Wen assumed an assistant had ordered were personally selected by Tingyuan 1.
Fate in the Original Novel
In the future revealed to Wen Cishu, Wen dies of heart disease when Bo Yiming is twelve. Tingyuan initially refuses to let anyone approach his body. After the families arrange the cremation, he takes Wen’s ashes to their wedding estate in France and shuts himself away, refusing even his son’s visits 1 3.
Over the following two years, Tingyuan develops severe dissociative disorder and lives in the belief that Wen is still alive. During a lucid interval, he digs a grave, lies inside a coffin holding the urn, and shoots himself. Bo Yiming arrives too late to intervene. These events belong to the original novel’s future, not the current storyline 3.
Appearance
- Build: Exceptionally tall and straight-backed, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, long legs, and powerful arms 2 3 29.
- Face and eyes: Sharply defined mixed-heritage features, thick brows, a high nose bridge, and dark green eyes 2.
- Hair: Brown-black at the roots, with a faint dark brown-gold tint toward the ends; the strands are stiff and coarse 5.
- Clothing: Frequently wears dark suits, black shirts, and rimless glasses. His tightly buttoned clothes contribute to his severe appearance 2 6.
- Voice: Deep, resonant, and authoritative. His precise but rigid Chinese initially strikes Wen Cishu as cold and impatient 3 5.
Personality
Bo Tingyuan is reserved and difficult to read. His father describes him as quiet from childhood and unaccustomed to expressing himself. Even when pleased by an unexpected family visit, his outward composure barely changes; Bo Yiming notices a smile that Wen Cishu cannot see 26 32.
His affection is usually practical rather than verbal. He closely monitors Wen’s health, carries him when tired, attends medical examinations, and tends to small discomforts himself. Wen regards him as cautious, thorough, and reliable in handling arrangements 3 4 6 47 49.
His devotion also has a possessive side. He competes with his son for Wen’s attention, tries to reserve Wen’s handmade desserts for himself, and moves the sleeping boy back to his own room to obtain private time with his husband 30 49.
As a father, Tingyuan can be intimidating and controlling: he disciplines Yiming harshly and initially proposes sending him to boarding school in France. However, he changes course after Wen’s objections and later apologizes when he frightens their son 3 4 36.
Health
Concealed Condition

- Wen’s madeleines and bedtime messages ease his agitation, although Tingyuan recognizes that this comfort is not enough to resolve it 42.
Medication and Treatment
- Doctor Xu manages his prescriptions. When he requests another bottle unexpectedly early, she questions whether his dosage has increased or his condition has worsened 16.
- He declines to explain what has changed and instead promises to control his dosage 16.
- His medication includes suppressants with side effects Doctor Xu has repeatedly warned him about. He nevertheless takes a dose while anticipating another night apart from Wen 34.
