Background / History

Tong Qian was a Headquarters ghost wielder responsible for a small city with comparatively few supernatural incidents. She was sent to Dachang City as support during the Ghost Knocking incident, where she sheltered dozens of survivors in a hot pot restaurant inside the Knocking Ghost's domain. Facing the Knocking Ghost directly, she exposed the smiling ghost face on the back of her head and used its laughter to interrupt the ghost's knocking. Continued use risked ghost resurgence and her own death. 172

Her approach to the incident conflicted with Yang Jian's pragmatism. Tong Qian insisted that ghost wielders should give survivors more chances, while acknowledging that dying pointlessly would only worsen the situation. Yang Jian regarded her as upright, stubborn, and fearless, likening her to Zhou Zheng. 174

During the Caesar Hotel incident, Tong Qian was attacked by a face-stealing and memory-altering ghost. Her satellite phone was concealed in her stomach, allowing Yang Jian to identify a female receptionist as Tong Qian beneath an implanted human-skin face. Though her body still showed vital signs, her ghost face had been taken and she later fell into a coma with no detectable brain waves. 342 345

Yang Jian eventually concluded that Tong Qian's remaining self was tied to her face. After restricting the ghost occupying her original body, he used Zhao Lei's body, Tong Qian's human face, and two opposing ghost faces to attempt a dangerous revival. He also altered her memories to ensure she would trust him after returning. 375 377

The procedure succeeded: Tong Qian awakened in Zhao Lei's male body with her own face between a smiling and a crying ghost face. She accepted the body because it had not been taken from an innocent person and thanked Yang Jian for saving her. 379

Appearance

Originally, Tong Qian was a tall woman with a ponytail, professional attire, and a mature, capable appearance. Her expression was typically indifferent and solemn while handling supernatural incidents. 172

After her revival, she retained a beautiful female face but inhabited a taller, stronger male body. Two androgynous ghost faces occupy either side of her head: one permanently smiling and one sorrowful and crying. 379

Her captivity in Xiao'an County hardened her outlook. After being drugged, experimented on, and tortured by Pei Dong's group, she concluded that some ghost wielders had forfeited any right to mercy.
