Background / History

Black Prison

Nashan came from Qingfeng Kingdom and spent so long imprisoned in Black Prison that he lost track of his children’s ages. His eldest son had been eleven when he left home, while his youngest daughter was still an infant. A beating shortly after his arrival blinded one eye, teaching him that the weak were prey to the strong 26 60 61.

He became the boss of an ordinary prison district, known to many prisoners only as One-Eyed Dragon. His authority was local rather than prison-wide, and his rule was violent: Nanadun knew that he had killed prisoners to seize crystals. Nashan initially submitted to Li Qiang reluctantly, intending to support him wholeheartedly only if his escape preparations proved credible 26 27 31 38.

Nashan joined Li Qiang, Zhao Zhi, and Kankanqi in infiltrating the white devils’ armory through the fire-pool passages. His attack on a sleeping guard went wrong when his spike lodged in the armor and the soldier bit his hand, forcing Li Qiang to intervene. During their escape from the collapsing tunnels, Nashan spotted an alternate passage that gave the group a way onward 28 29.

His loyalty became firmly established during the prisoners’ resistance. He commanded armed prisoners against Black Camp soldiers and was wounded while throwing an explosive bomb. Li Qiang rescued him and Han Jin; when Li Qiang subsequently collapsed, Nashan tearfully declared that he would gladly die in his place 34 35.

Freedom and Discipleship

After the escape, Nashan knelt and asked Li Qiang to accept him as a disciple. By the meeting with Hong Qian and Kubo, he identified himself as a registered disciple and delighted in making the more accomplished Kubo address him as “Martial Uncle” 36 46.

Freedom also revealed a generosity absent from his prison reputation. When the companions needed money, he handed over his hidden crystals without reluctance, entrusting them to Tange as quartermaster. He then began foundation training under Zhao Hao, although his fear of pain and exhaustion made him one of the instructor’s most troublesome pupils 38 42.

At Nanzi Dong’s workshop, Nashan obtained valuable armor and the Azure Shadow Binding. His first experiment with the latter accidentally electrocuted Tange. Later, he used it to torture the three captive Great Venerables, earning a reprimand from Li Qiang for disobeying orders against abusing prisoners 47 48 55 56.

Western Continent Journey

Nashan accompanied Li Qiang’s traveling party, acquiring a short sword from Qi Junsha and fighting beside Paben against Fan Kingdom warriors at Rock Stronghold. His electrical attack there accidentally triggered lightning from the sky; despite being startled himself, he immediately claimed the result as his special move 84 87.

During the Heavenly Road Grassland journey, he helped defend the caravan against the Beast-Splitting Tribe’s creatures. Although his sword could cut through the attackers, their numbers eventually overwhelmed his ability to protect anyone beyond those nearby 92 95 96.

Homecoming and Life on Sealed Fate Planet

Nashan’s desire to return home increasingly competed with his fear that his family would be gone. At Desperation Cape, he bought toys for his children and sought jewelry for his wife, even though he could no longer remember how old the children were. After witnessing Paben’s unhappy homecoming, he became more anxious, prompting Li Qiang to promise to accompany him 42 60 124.

His eventual return fulfilled those fears. By the reunion with Li Qiang more than a century later, Nashan reported that even his youngest daughter had become an old woman and hardly anyone he knew remained. He returned afterward and devoted himself wholeheartedly to cultivation, reaching the Nascent Soul Realm 199.

On Sealed Fate Planet, he fought in the Life-and-Death Arena after a cultivator harassed Mei’er, but lost and suffered extensive damage to his battle armor. He later traveled with Li Qiang and Zhao Zhi, subdued two cultivators overseeing captive laborers, and rashly attacked Situ Yong for injuring Hua Meiniang 199 205 206 207.

Activities on Earth

On Earth, Nashan established a large bodyguard company and organized mercenaries in a small Southeast Asian country. Accompanied by Tange, he repeatedly extorted underworld figures and arms dealers, including intercepting one dealer’s goods and selling them back to him. Zhao Zhi found him difficult to restrain, while Zhao Hao remained one of the few people he would heed 272 273.

A mercenary assault on his villa exposed a more serious threat: the Poison Incantation Sect had bound his nascent soul with a Heartless Knot. Tange stayed behind to protect the unconscious Nashan until Li Qiang and Zhao Hao arrived. Liquor awakened him and temporarily loosened the restriction, but his nascent soul remained bound 273.

With Zhang Yuguo missing and suspected of betrayal, the group decided to travel openly to Europe to draw out their enemies. Li Qiang also warned Nashan that his appetite for killing could damage his cultivation and cause it to stagnate. Nashan agreed to refrain from killing, though he still wanted the attackers punished 273 274.

Appearance

Nashan is a burly, bald man whose intimidating appearance remains recognizable even after reaching the Nascent Soul Realm 26 199.

  • Before Nascent Soul cultivation: One functioning eye, two long facial scars, a broad mouth, and two yellow front teeth 42 61.
  • After reaching Nascent Soul: Restored eyesight and unscarred skin, but the same bald head and broadly unchanged facial features 199.
  • Reason for retaining his looks: He was preparing to return home and feared his family would not recognize him if he altered his appearance drastically 199.
  • Later armor: Wears conspicuous silvery-white battle armor 199.

Personality

Nashan is boastful, foul-mouthed, and eager to display authority. Li Qiang’s presence often emboldens him into extravagant threats, whether confronting rival prisoners or the Banshou Trading House. His swagger is easily punctured by a reprimand, and he habitually covers his bald head in anticipation of Li Qiang’s slaps 32 44 46.

He is more perceptive than his buffoonery suggests. His prison experience taught him to read people’s reactions and recognize concealed valuables. At Nanzi Dong’s workshop, he selected an exceptional suit of armor not through technical knowledge, but by watching its maker’s involuntary response 47.

His loyalty is intense and demonstrative. He worries openly when Li Qiang is in danger, gives up hard-won possessions for the group, and is deeply distressed at the prospect of separation from Tange. His rough manner does not prevent emotional vulnerability: after escaping the armory tunnels, his relieved laughter turns into uncontrollable sobbing 29 30 35 38 112.

Nashan nevertheless retains a cruel and impulsive streak. He abuses helpless captives, enjoys intimidating others, and later builds a life around extortion and violence on Earth. Li Qiang repeatedly has to restrain him, ultimately warning that the stimulation of killing threatens his spiritual progress 55 56 90 273 274.

His approach to mortality is to take life one day at a time. Having survived Black Prison, he refuses to dwell on future tribulations, even after seeing how long cultivation can outlast ordinary family ties 96 199 207.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Nashan fights with both handheld swords and a flying sword, using weapons substantially more powerful than his early technical skill 84 87 207.

  • Performs Wild Battle in Eight Directions with the short sword given by Qi Junsha 84.
  • Uses the Light-Reversing Sword to kill Combat Beasts and project Sword-Ray extending more than five meters 87 95.
  • Can wield a heavy cleaver in one hand and the Light-Reversing Sword in the other 92.
  • His Nether Thunder Sword cannot overcome the much stronger Situ Yong, whose counter leaves Nashan numb and staggering 207.

Law Treasure Use

Nashan can activate offensive and restrictive Law Treasures, though careless handling initially endangers his companions 48 206.

  • Uses the Azure Shadow Binding to discharge electrical arcs or a sheet of lightning 48 60.
  • Uses the Cankun Set to seal two defeated cultivators’ powers completely 206.
  • His lightning triggering a natural strike at Rock Stronghold is explicitly a coincidence, not a demonstrated ability to command storms 87.

Physical Strength and Combat Experience

His strengthened body supports powerful close-range attacks, acrobatics, and the use of heavy weapons 31 42 92.

  • Lifts a large rock overhead to demonstrate his usefulness on a supply trip 42.
  • Nearly crushes Zhutou’s hand during a contest disguised as a handshake 90.
  • Commands prisoner volleys with Spine-Piercing Spears during the Black Camp assault 34.
  • Remains inexperienced in some practical skills, notably controlling a Black-Tipped Mount in battle 87.

Observation and Persuasion

Nashan uses social instincts developed in Black Prison to acquire valuables and win favor 47 206.

  • Reads an owner’s reactions to identify prized equipment 47.
  • Obtains swords from Qi Junsha through well-timed flattery 84.
  • Builds a close relationship with Fu Shan during his time at the Ancient Sword Academy, receiving several fine Law Treasures 206.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Azure Shadow Binding — His first Law Treasure, made by Nanzi Dong and modified by Li Qiang with Brilliant Swift Heavenly Fire. Originally releases a single electrical arc with little True Essence expenditure; the modification enables a net of arcs. Nashan later fastens it to his elbow for convenient use 48 60.
  • Light-Reversing Sword — A short sword bestowed by Qi Junsha, who names the pair given to Nashan and Tange “Against the Light” and “Against the Radiance.” Nashan’s sword produces blue or blue-green radiance and proves exceptionally sharp against beasts 84 87 92.
  • Nether Thunder Sword — A famous ancient flying sword obtained from Li Qiang’s distribution. Black, five inches long, and shaped like a slender teardrop, with lightning-like flickers within it. Nashan catches it by blocking it with his arm, injuring himself 124 125.
  • Cankun Set — A restriction-imposing Law Treasure received from Fu Shan; used to seal the powers of captured cultivators 206.
  • Armor — Uses captured standard-issue armor in Black Prison, selects an exceptional auction-bound suit from Nanzi Dong’s workshop, and later wears silvery-white battle armor. The latter is badly cracked in the Life-and-Death Arena and requires re-refining 30 32 47 199.
  • Other weapons — Uses a triangular spike during the armory raid, a Spine-Piercing Spear and explosive bomb during the prison uprising, and a heavy cleaver against the Beast-Splitting Tribe’s creatures 29 34 35 92.

Relationships

  • Li Qiang — Boss, master, and closest object of loyalty. Their affection is expressed through rough teasing and discipline; Nashan regards even a familiar slap on his bald head as warm reassurance after a separation 35 46 82.
  • Tange — Closest friend and habitual sparring partner in jokes. Nashan desperately tries to prevent him from staying behind, while Tange later risks capture rather than abandon him during the villa attack 84 110 112 273.
  • Zhao Hao — Senior martial brother and strict instructor. Nashan fears his discipline, relies on his cultivation guidance, and continues to heed him when others struggle to control his behavior 42 125 272.
  • Paben — Fellow disciple and traveling companion. They trade insults, fight side by side, and discuss the costs of longevity; Paben’s family tragedy intensifies Nashan’s fear of returning home 87 93 96 124.
  • Zhao Zhi — Fellow former prisoner and companion. Suggests opening an escort agency together, but later disapproves of Nashan’s violent activities on Earth 42 272.
  • Han Jin — Prison comrade who protects the wounded Nashan and prepares to die alongside him before Li Qiang arrives 35.
  • Qi Junsha — Grandmaster through Li Qiang; gives Nashan a short sword suited to his low cultivation 82 84.
  • Fu Shan — Senior benefactor whom Nashan frequently visits at the Ancient Sword Academy; supplies him with several valuable Law Treasures 206.
  • Mei’er — Li Qiang’s cherished companion, whom Nashan helps protect under Zhao Hao’s orders. He fights after another cultivator harasses her 199 222.
  • Wife and children — His original reason for wanting to escape Black Prison. He buys gifts for them, but returns so late that his youngest daughter is already elderly and hardly anyone familiar remains 26 60 199.
