Background / History

Family and Entry into Martial Arts

Zhang Lingfeng grows up in a landowning household in Zhang Family Gully. Working alongside his father, Zhang Da, he spends several years collecting tenants’ rent, using threats and violence when necessary. Although materially comfortable, he regards martial strength as essential to protecting the family’s property in a world threatened by demons and other dangers 1 2.

His grandfather initially refuses to fund martial training because of its expense and uncertain returns. The extermination of the similarly wealthy Ma family changes his mind. With help from his father and elder sister, Zhang Lingfeng secures the family’s training place and leaves for Guo Wei’s school under Liu Feng’s guidance 1 2.

The family pays 290 taels upfront for a year’s tuition and medicinal decoctions. Guo Wei identifies his superior aptitude but considers his late start a serious limitation. Zhang Pingping moves to the county town with him to manage his meals and daily needs, allowing him to concentrate on cultivation 3 4.

Establishing Warm Breeze Hall

After reaching Ming Jin, Zhang Lingfeng begins converting his school connections into practical influence. He persuades Wu Yun to arrange Wang Biao’s release from jail, then spends lavishly entertaining Wu Yun to turn the transaction into a lasting friendship. Liu Feng also becomes financially involved in the siblings’ investment and lending operation 7 10 14.

Warm Breeze Hall develops with Chen Sanshi as its public leader, Zhang Pingping managing its affairs, and Zhang Lingfeng as its true master. His family supplies capital, while Liu Feng invests 300 taels. Zhang Lingfeng leaves routine management to his sister so that business does not interrupt his cultivation 14 15 21 28.

Little Moon Mountain Water Dispute

The Li Clan blocks water to the Zhang Clan’s fields, relying on its resident martial instructor, Master Hong. Recognizing that he and Chen Sanshi cannot defeat Hong together, Zhang Lingfeng avoids making a request that might jeopardize his relationship with Wu Yun 16 18.

Instead, he joins Liu Feng and Chen Sanshi in subduing the indebted martial artist Wei He, striking from concealment with lime and chili powder. Zhang Pingping and Chen Sanshi then coerce Wei He into attacking Master Hong. Wei He kills Hong, enabling the Zhang Clan to regain the water supply and impose fees on its rival 18 19.

The conflict eventually leaves the Zhang Clan with a ten-year water agreement. Its later purchase of 763 mu of Li Clan farmland for 500 taels brings its holdings to 1,891 mu 21 31.

Gambling House and Baile Gang Conflict

Zhang Lingfeng obtains permission to open a gambling house through Huang Jiefu, initially agreeing to surrender sixty percent of its monthly proceeds. When Dong Wenhan’s Baile Gang opposes the venture, he feigns withdrawal while concealing his newly attained Dark Force 24 25.

He kills Dong Wenhan with blows to the back that shatter his internal organs, preventing him from using his saber. Warm Breeze Hall absorbs the Baile Gang, and Zhang Lingfeng’s survival and victory force the school’s inner-courtyard disciples to reassess him 27 29.

Competition for Guo Wei’s Legacy

Zhang Lingfeng’s principal cultivation rival is Ye Fan, whose exceptional aptitude initially wins Guo Wei’s preferential treatment. Their competition centers on inheriting Guo Wei’s complete teachings, particularly the secret thirteenth move omitted from the ordinary Iron Mountain Fist curriculum 15 16.

After privately revealing his Dark Force to Guo Wei, Zhang Lingfeng discovers that Qi and Blood Pills accelerate his progress through the Subsidy System. He later demonstrates his realm publicly and gains increasing recognition from both his master and fellow disciples 32 33 35.

When Wei Hong accuses Ye Fan of violating her and attempting to abandon her, Zhang Lingfeng brokers an engagement while keeping the matter from Guo Wei. Ye Fan subsequently passes a pill to him through Wei He, and Zhang Lingfeng’s leverage becomes strong enough to compel his cooperation in later affairs 40 42 47.

Zhang Lingfeng ultimately defeats Ye Fan in a witnessed sparring match. Guo Wei acknowledges that he previously misjudged him and considers taking him as a personal disciple, but postpones the decision to observe him further 43 44.

Clan Expansion and Wang Biao’s Rescue

To extend the clan’s connections beyond his own school, Zhang Lingfeng sponsors Zhang Fugui at Elder Zheng’s school and Zhang Fukang at the Xu Clan school. He also studies the families supplying local tax officials, intending to improve the Zhang Clan’s position in dealings with the authorities 31 44.

When Great Saber Hong abducts Wang Biao, Wang Fang offers most of her family’s remaining farmland for another rescue. Zhang Lingfeng requires compensation even if the attempt fails, then assembles fellow disciples and pressures Huang Jiefu into leading an expedition 46 47.

Great Saber Hong releases Wang Biao and flees after seeing the approaching force. Although the arrest fails, news spreads that Zhang Lingfeng has frightened the notorious bandit away 49.

Personality

Zhang Lingfeng is calculating, ambitious, and protective of his clan’s interests. He treats martial cultivation as both personal security and the foundation of family power. His methods are openly coercive when necessary: he intimidates tenants, ambushes stronger opponents, and negotiates compensation that protects his own interests even if a rescue fails 1 18 46.

He also understands the value of generosity and social obligation. Food, banquets, gifts, and investment returns help him secure followers and cultivate useful friendships. His confidence in the Subsidy System sustains his training despite repeated doubts about his closed bones, while his rivalry with Ye Fan exposes both his competitiveness and his pride in his landowning background 5 10 15 23 33.
