Organization and Personnel
- Zhang Lingfeng — True owner and principal martial backer. Initially stays behind the scenes to concentrate on cultivation; takes public ownership of the hall after the Baile Gang’s defeat 15 25 29.
- Zhang Pingping — Founder and day-to-day manager. Sets lending policy, controls funds, authorizes loans, and directs the takeover of Baile Ward 11 14 27.
- Chen Sanshi — Public gang leader and hall master, also called “Master San.” Appointed both to keep the enforcers in line through his Ming Jin strength and to shoulder responsibility if trouble arises 11 48.
- Liu Feng — Investor and Ming Jin combatant. Helps subdue borrowers and the Baile Gang; Zhang Pingping promises to seek precious medicines to support another attempt at Dark Force 18 21 27.
- Hei Hu and Sun Yan — Debt collectors and enforcers. Recover loans, carry messages, and detain Li Si’s family during preparations against Dong Wenhan 11 13 27 36.
- Tang Baihu — Helper recruited as business expands. Transports Zhang Lingfeng and later carries Dong Wenhan’s corpse to the Baile Gang during the takeover 14 27.
- Wei He — Initially a borrower coerced into serving the Zhang Clan. Later helps ambush Dong Wenhan and manages a gambling house for Zhang Lingfeng 19 27 30 39.
- Li Si — Former Baile Gang intermediary turned collaborator. Helps persuade gang members to submit and assists with managing the captured gambling houses 27 28.
- Martial-school apprentices — Some outer-courtyard apprentices follow Hei Hu and Sun Yan, collecting debts for extra income. Zhang Lingfeng later refers to the hall’s “hundreds of brothers” 28 40.
Business and Finances
Lending
- Borrowers: Business owners, gamblers, martial arts apprentices, and gang members seek loans from the hall 14.
- Collateral: Li Si pledges Baile Gambling House for his loan, deliberately testing whether the hall can enforce repayment against the Baile Gang 12.
- Cultivation loans: Promising apprentices receive terms intended to create useful connections. Zhang Pingping considers waiving Wei He’s interest if he successfully reaches Dark Force 14.
- Collection methods: Enforcers confront borrowers at home, use physical intimidation, and threaten or detain relatives. Martial artists such as Liu Feng assist when a borrower is too strong for ordinary collectors 11 18 19 27.
| Documented Loan | Amount Disbursed | Repayment | Term / Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ma Sanyang’s ten-tael loan | 9 taels | 13 taels | Already overdue when Hei Hu reports it; collected after a confrontation at his home 11. |
| Li Si’s two-hundred-tael loan | 180 taels | 240 taels | Ten days; Baile Gambling House pledged as collateral 12. |
| Terms for promising martial apprentices | 90% of the stated principal | 120% of the stated principal | Applied when approving Wei He’s requested hundred-tael loan for one month 14. |
Capital and Expenditure
| Financial Detail | Record |
|---|---|
| Initial lending capital | Zhang Pingping turns an initial hundred taels into more than 260 taels through three months of compounded interest 11. |
| Reinvestment | Zhang Lingfeng and Liu Feng each add another hundred taels rather than immediately splitting profits 11. |
| Expansion funding | Zhang Lingfeng brings back 200 taels from Zhang Family Gully; Liu Feng also contributes 200 taels during the same funding round 14. |
| Investor return | Liu Feng receives sixty taels in dividends while leaving additional funds in the business 21. |
| Takeover receipts | Absorbing the Baile Gang brings more than 2,000 taels into the accounts. Gifts to officials and rewards to members leave several hundred taels available 31. |
| Continuing expenses | Payments to the authorities, members’ shares, operating capital, meat, and social obligations substantially reduce disposable income 14 34. |
- The hall’s monthly interest income eventually exceeds the earnings from the Zhang Clan’s thousand-plus mu of farmland 21.
- Its income pays for Zhang Lingfeng’s martial training and helps fund family protection and his cousins’ apprenticeships 21 24 31.
- Despite its growth, purchasing a high-grade Qi and Blood Pill for Zhang Lingfeng could require roughly two months of available funds 34.
Gambling Houses
- Zhang Pingping proposes opening a gambling house to expand the hall’s reach across Baile Ward 24.
- Huang Jiefu grants official approval in exchange for sixty percent of the gambling house’s monthly proceeds 24.
- After defeating the Baile Gang, the hall takes over its gambling houses and other businesses, obtaining a continuing source of revenue 29 31.
- Huang later considers raising the authorities’ share to seventy percent, but instead reduces it to fifty percent after learning of Zhang Lingfeng’s Dark Force cultivation 36 38.
History
Establishment and the First Baile Gang Challenge
Zhang Pingping establishes Warm Breeze Hall as a lending business. Once Chen Sanshi finishes helping with land reclamation, he is summoned to become its public leader. His appointment gives the operation a visible Ming Jin protector while Zhang Lingfeng and Liu Feng remain less conspicuous backers 11 12.
The collection of Ma Sanyang’s overdue debt attracts Baile Gambling House’s attention. Its representatives resent a rival lender operating in their territory, and Li Si approaches the hall to borrow as much as possible. Zhang Pingping accepts the challenge rather than concede its right to conduct business on Baile Street 11 12.
When Li Si defaults, Zhang Pingping prevents Chen Sanshi from confronting the gang rashly. Zhang Lingfeng instead brings Wu Yun to the gambling house, where Wu Yun’s presence ensures careful treatment. After they leave, Hei Hu and Sun Yan present the IOU and collect 240 taels. News that even Baile Gambling House cannot default on the hall strengthens its reputation and attracts borrowers 12 13 14.
Wei He and the Water Dispute
Wei He borrows money for blood-and-Qi replenishment before attempting Dark Force. After his breakthrough fails and he cannot repay, the hall captures him and detains his sisters. Zhang Pingping and Chen Sanshi offer to cancel his debt if he cripples Master Hong, the Li Clan’s martial instructor 14 18 19.
Wei He instead kills Master Hong during their fight, helping the Zhang Clan reclaim Little Moon Mountain’s water supply. Chen Sanshi returns his IOU and releases his sisters afterward. Although they are unharmed, Wei He recognizes that the hall regards them as leverage over him 19 20.
Destruction of the Baile Gang
Plans for a Warm Breeze Hall gambling house threaten the Baile Gang’s principal business. Dong Wenhan fails to block its official approval, pays Wu Yun five hundred taels to remain neutral, and sends threats to the hall. Zhang Lingfeng responds with a letter claiming that the gambling-house plan has been abandoned 24 25.
The apparent retreat conceals preparations for an ambush. Hei Hu and Sun Yan imprison Li Si’s wife and child, while Zhang Lingfeng reveals his Dark Force cultivation to secure Li Si’s cooperation. Li Si then feeds Dong Wenhan false information that Zhang Lingfeng has failed his breakthrough and that Wei He wants revenge 25 27.
Dong visits Wei He to recruit him against the hall. Wei He pretends to agree, then restrains Dong’s hands while Zhang Lingfeng strikes him from behind and beats him to death. This prevents Dong from drawing his dangerous saber 26 27.
The wider takeover is bloody despite the successful ambush. Wei He, Chen Sanshi, Liu Feng, and their allies kill loyalists and suppress resistance. Li Si’s intervention and the display of Dong’s corpse help bring the remaining gang members into submission, allowing Warm Breeze Hall to absorb the gang’s personnel and businesses 27 28 29.
Consolidation of Baile Ward
Wu Yun reveals Zhang Lingfeng’s ownership to the martial-school disciples, mistakenly fearing that the hall has been destroyed. Zhang Lingfeng and Liu Feng subsequently announce that Dong Wenhan is dead and the Baile Gang no longer exists 28 29.
A banquet at Drunken Spring House demonstrates the new regime’s connections. Dark Force martial artists attend alongside Huang Jiefu, whose presence publicly signals government backing. The display also helps isolate the Li Clan, which subsequently sells 763 mu of farmland to the Zhang Clan 30.
Government Pressure and Later Activity
Ye Fan attempts to obtain cultivation funding from Zhang Lingfeng, then asks Huang Jiefu to pressure him after being refused. Huang plans to intimidate the hall and increase its payments, but changes course when Hei Hu informs him of Zhang Lingfeng’s Dark Force breakthrough. He orders his men to stop throwing their weight around in Baile Ward 35 36 37.
Later, when Zhang Lingfeng joins martial artists and government men on an expedition to rescue Wang Biao, Chen Sanshi secretly sends Sanjiao and Dapen to warn Great Saber Hong. Hong kills both messengers 48.
External Relationships
- Zhang Clan — Founding family and financial backer. The hall supplies income and force that support the clan’s cultivation expenses, landholdings, and disputes 14 19 21 31.
- Baile Gang — Former territorial and commercial rival. Destroyed after Dong Wenhan’s death; its surviving personnel and businesses are absorbed 25 27 29.
- Wu Yun — Paid intermediary and early protector, not a hall member. Helps recover Li Si’s debt and introduces Zhang Lingfeng to Huang Jiefu, but accepts Dong Wenhan’s payment to remain neutral in the later conflict 13 24 25.
- Huang Jiefu and the East District Yamen — Official patrons and recipients of profit payments. Their support legitimizes the gambling business, but Huang also attempts to extract a larger share of its earnings 24 30 36 38.
- Guo Wei Martial Arts School — Source of personal connections, apprentices employed in debt collection, and influential banquet guests; the school itself is not identified as a hall affiliate 28 30.
- Li Clan — Opponent of the Zhang Clan in the water dispute. Warm Breeze Hall’s rise discourages further resistance and strengthens the pressure to sell its farmland 19 20 30.
- Ye Fan — Unsuccessful prospective beneficiary who seeks hall-funded cultivation resources, then tries to enlist Huang Jiefu against Zhang Lingfeng 32 35 36.
Influence and Limits
- Local dominance: After the takeover, Warm Breeze Hall is unrivaled within Baile Ward 32.
- Limited county-wide standing: Despite that dominance, it remains minor compared with the gangs controlled by Baiyang County’s four district government offices 32.
- Dependence on official tolerance: The yamen prioritizes revenue and manageable public order rather than loyalty to a particular gang 28.
- Dependence on martial strength: Zhang Lingfeng’s publicly confirmed Dark Force cultivation materially improves the hall’s position against official intimidation and reduces its required payments 36 37 38.
