Background / History
Recruitment and preferential treatment
Ye Fan entered Guo Wei’s school with top-tier superior-grade bone structure, an aptitude described as one in a thousand. Guo Wei immediately accepted him into the inner courtyard, provided a room, allowed him to keep a martial manual, and personally supervised his training. His support included Qi and blood restorative soup, spirit fish, and medicinal meals. The other disciples regarded him as a likely inheritor of Guo Wei’s mantle 15 18.
Ye Fan associated primarily with the Dark Force disciples and largely ignored weaker students. As Zhang Lingfeng gathered Ming Jin disciples around himself, the inner courtyard developed two competing circles. Ye Fan subsequently disrupted Zhang Lingfeng’s planned meal by inviting the same disciples while excluding Zhang Lingfeng 15 16.
Early success and failed breakthrough
After reaching Ming Jin, Ye Fan grew closer to Wu Yun and the school’s Dark Force disciples. His talent also secured an honorary position with the Yan Lineage at a monthly stipend of one hundred taels—far above the twenty to thirty taels received by most newly recruited Ming Jin disciples 17 18 21.
Flattery and a storyteller’s account of another prodigy encouraged Ye Fan to attempt Dark Force prematurely. He wanted to surprise Guo Wei and make his name throughout Baiyang County. The attempt failed, despite Guo Wei intervening to assist him. Guo Wei reprimanded his impatience and instructed him to replenish his blood and Qi before trying again 23.
Competition for Guo Wei’s legacy
Ye Fan eventually attained Dark Force and aimed for a first-class result in the following year’s martial examination. Both Guo Wei and the Yan Lineage expected him to reach Transforming Jin, but Zhang Lingfeng’s own breakthrough created a rival for resources and the school’s secret thirteenth move 32 33.
Seeking additional Qi and Blood Pills without accepting tighter obligations to the Yan Lineage, Ye Fan tried to obtain sponsorship from Zhang Lingfeng. He demonstrated his strength and invoked the possibility of government investigations into Warm Breeze Hall. When Zhang Lingfeng refused, Ye Fan asked Huang Jiefu to pressure him. The plan backfired after Huang learned of Zhang Lingfeng’s Dark Force cultivation and chose to cultivate friendly relations with him instead 34 35 37.
Drugging and coerced betrothal
At Zhang Lingfeng’s celebratory banquet, Ye Fan became resentful of the attention his rival received. After leaving, he punched a wall in frustration. Zhang Pingping approached him with praise and invited him to drink; she then used wine and a drug to bring him together with Wei Hong 38 39.
Ye Fan awoke with no memory of the night and believed he had lost his primordial yang. Wei Hong accused him of violating her and refusing responsibility, while Wei He and Chen Sanshi confronted him. Zhang Lingfeng presented himself as an intermediary and frightened Ye Fan with claims that Guo Wei might cripple his cultivation or expel him if the incident became known 39 40.
Under this pressure, Ye Fan signed a marriage contract with Wei Hong and pledged the Qi and Blood Pills he would receive from Guo Wei over the next six months as a betrothal gift. A separate signed statement could be used against him if he refused to marry her after the examination. Unaware of the siblings’ scheme, Ye Fan thanked Zhang Lingfeng for supposedly saving his future 41.
Defeat and enforced cooperation
Ye Fan subsequently surrendered a high-grade Qi and Blood Pill through Wei He, who passed it to Zhang Lingfeng. After consuming that pill and purchasing another, Zhang Lingfeng defeated him in a school spar. Ye Fan suspected the source of his rival’s sudden improvement, but his compromised position and distracted state left him hesitant in combat. Guo Wei scolded him for losing his composure 42 43 44.
When Zhang Lingfeng later requested help rescuing Wang Biao from Great Saber Hong, Ye Fan agreed because of the leverage held over him. His assent helped pressure the other disciples into joining. Great Saber Hong recognized Ye Fan among the approaching martial artists and fled rather than confront the group, freeing Wang Biao 47 49.
Appearance
- Described as handsome by Chen Sanmei when he visited Zhang Lingfeng’s residence 34.
Personality
Ye Fan is proud of his aptitude and highly conscious of rank. From his arrival, he courted powerful disciples while disregarding outer-courtyard apprentices and many Ming Jin seniors. His hostility toward Zhang Lingfeng included deliberate exclusion and attempts to undermine the latter’s social circle 15 16 17.
Praise easily inflates his confidence. Before his failed Dark Force attempt, he had begun privately dismissing even his Dark Force seniors as inferior. He treated another prodigy’s achievement as something he should be able to reproduce, disregarding Guo Wei’s intended period of consolidation 23.
He is calculating about patronage: he wanted the Yan Lineage’s resources without becoming permanently bound to it and considered the smaller Zhang household easier to control. However, his concern for reputation and Guo Wei’s approval made him vulnerable to intimidation after the incident with Wei Hong 34 40 41.
His jealousy also distorts his judgment. At the celebratory banquet, he interpreted others’ attention to Zhang Lingfeng as personal rejection even though his fellow disciples remained close to him. Following his later defeat, his confidence collapsed into self-doubt 38 44.
Abilities & Skills

- Learned the basic Iron Mountain Fist forms within days 15.
- Reached Ming Jin in less than two months and Dark Force within a year 38.
- Guo Wei estimated that sufficient blood and Qi replenishment could give him a sixty-percent chance on an initial Transforming Jin attempt; success was not guaranteed 32.
- His failed breakthrough established that talent could not replace adequate preparation 23.
Twelve-Routine Iron Mountain Fist
Ye Fan practices Guo Wei’s fist art, which combines offense, defense, stance training, breathing exercises, and movement principles 15 17.
- Aligned with the technique’s fist intent immediately after reaching Ming Jin 17.
- Uses the Ascending Mountain Form and Descending Mountain Form 35.
- Initially possessed deeper technical understanding and more accomplished forms than Zhang Lingfeng, owing to Guo Wei’s attentive instruction 37.
- Is not documented learning the secret thirteenth move, which remains central to the competition for Guo Wei’s legacy 15 41.
Dark Force
Dark Force allows Ye Fan to coordinate strength within his skin and flesh through circulating blood and Qi 35.
- Demonstrated practiced control of Jin soon after his breakthrough 35.
- Shattered stone bricks and drove his fist into a wall 38.
- Remained difficult for Wei He to subdue even after being attacked with lime powder 40.
- Lost to Zhang Lingfeng when inferior strength, reduced vitality, distraction, and hesitation undermined his technique 43.
Primordial Yang Limitation
Preserving primordial yang helps martial practitioners retain robust blood and vitality and improves their prospects of reaching Transforming Jin 39.
- Ye Fan believed he lost it during the drugged encounter with Wei Hong 39.
- The loss did not visibly reveal itself to Guo Wei when Ye Fan returned 42.
- It was a disadvantage to future cultivation, not proof that he could never advance again 39 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twelve-Routine Iron Mountain Fist manual — Guo Wei permitted him to carry the lower-section manual upon admission, an unusual privilege 15.
- Qi and Blood Pills — Received high-grade pills from Guo Wei roughly every two months. His six-month betrothal pledge diverted this support away from his own cultivation 34 41 42.
- Datong Street residence — A courtyard gifted by the Yan Lineage after his Dark Force breakthrough, worth approximately two to three hundred taels and neighboring Zhang Lingfeng’s residence 34.
- Marriage contract and written pledges — Signed and marked documents binding him to Wei Hong and the promised pills; also used as leverage against him 41.

- Zhang Lingfeng — Fellow disciple and rival for Guo Wei’s legacy. Became the beneficiary of Ye Fan’s diverted pills and used the marriage incident to secure his compliance 41 42 47.
- Zhang Pingping — Zhang Lingfeng’s elder sister. Exploited Ye Fan’s resentment and susceptibility to praise to arrange the drugged encounter with Wei Hong 38 39.
- Wei Hong — Contracted fiancée. Participated in the scheme against him and expected a formal wedding after he achieved success in the martial examination 39 41.
- Wei He — Wei Hong’s brother and prospective brother-in-law. Enforced the settlement and transferred Ye Fan’s pledged pill to Zhang Lingfeng 40 41 42.
- Wu Yun — Close senior disciple and fellow Yan Lineage affiliate; frequently accompanied Ye Fan to restaurants and social gatherings 18 22.
- Yan Hexiang and the Yan Lineage — Patrons who provided an honorary stipend, residence, and cultivation support while seeking a lasting commitment from him 21 34 38.
