Background
Guo Wei is one of the few Transformation Force Great Perfection experts in Baiyang County. His reputation makes his school an attractive destination for aspiring martial artists, while his complete Iron Mountain Fist inheritance becomes a prize sought by Zhang Lingfeng and Ye Fan 7 15.
He has no children and hopes to nurture a successor who will care for him in old age, inherit his mantle, and handle enemies who might come to his door. These concerns motivate his substantial investment in promising disciples 33 43.
Guo Wei Martial Arts School
The school stands in Baile Ward. By Zhang Lingfeng’s early discipleship, Guo Wei has accepted fifty or sixty disciples over the years, though fewer than twenty still regularly train in the inner courtyard. Others have established their own ventures or taken outside employment 9 28.
| Practice | Details |
|---|---|
| Admission screening | Guo Wei examines applicants’ bones and rejects those without aptitude, regardless of payment, to protect his reputation 15. |
| Formal discipleship | Zhang Lingfeng earns admission as a disciple after attaining Ming Jin; Ye Fan receives immediate discipleship because of his exceptional aptitude 7 15. |
| Tuition exemption | Formal disciples are exempt from tuition but must uphold the school’s reputation and perform work for it 7. |
| School duties | Duties include guiding apprentices and resolving outside trouble for Guo Wei 4. |
| Outside employment | The school hosts demonstrations where clans, gangs, escort agencies, and other employers recruit martial artists 21. |
| Income contribution | Disciples pay Guo Wei twenty percent of their outside stipends in return for instruction. Reaching Transforming Jin grants exemption; no disciple has done so as of Chapter 21 21. |
Appearance
- Exceptionally sturdy build: His physique conveys a strength far beyond that of ordinary farmhands 3.
- Intimidating presence: He commands awe without needing to display anger 3.
- Powerful hands: During Zhang Lingfeng’s examination, his grip on the young man’s shoulder feels like pincers 3.
Personality
Guo Wei values aptitude, hard work, and temperament together. He dislikes premature excitement and overconfidence, initially criticizing Zhang Lingfeng’s reaction to the fist manual and later rebuking Ye Fan for attempting a breakthrough without sufficient preparation 4 23.
He is receptive to gifts and financial consideration without allowing money to override every standard. Zhang Lingfeng’s advance payment earns extra attention, and the Zhang family’s generous apprenticeship gifts move him; nevertheless, he refuses applicants whose lack of aptitude could damage his school’s reputation 3 8 15.
His sternness often conceals concern. Although he angrily dismisses Ye Fan’s absence from training, he remains worried when he learns the boy never returned home. He also softens his warnings to Zhang Lingfeng rather than extinguish his determination to cultivate 23 39.
Abilities & Skills
Iron Mountain Fist
Guo Wei teaches the Twelve-Routine Iron Mountain Fist, an internal martial art incorporating stance training and breathing exercises 4.
- Foundation training: The upper part can lead to Ming Jin when cultivated to its limit 3.
- Jin release: He personally demonstrates the middle section’s methods for releasing Jin force 7.
- Advanced instruction: He supplies Zhang Lingfeng with the lower part after learning of his Dark Force breakthrough 33.
- Secret thirteenth move: The complete art contains thirteen moves. Guo Wei withholds the final move from ordinary students, reserving it for a personal disciple who inherits his legacy. Knowledge of it gives a decisive advantage over practitioners limited to the twelve routines 15.
Aptitude and Cultivation Assessment
Guo Wei examines bone structure by touch and recognizes changes in a disciple’s Jin, Qi, and blood 3 7 43.
- Identifies Zhang Lingfeng’s superior aptitude and closed bones at their first meeting 3.
- Recognizes Ye Fan’s top-tier superior-grade bone structure before the boy begins training 15.
- Checks Ye Fan after his failed Dark Force breakthrough and finds no lasting damage 23.
- Revises his assessment of Zhang Lingfeng when the latter repeatedly advances despite his closed bones, attributing the results to an exceptional constitution 33 37 44.
Breakthrough Guidance
Guo Wei explains martial advancement as the removal of progressively deeper bodily shackles, rather than simply an increase in blood and Qi 22.
- Preparation: Greater reserves of blood and Qi improve the chances of a successful breakthrough, but accumulation alone cannot remove every barrier 22 23.
- Restraint: He advises preserving primordial yang to improve the prospects of reaching Transforming Jin 32 37.
- Pill dependence: He warns that excessive reliance on Qi and Blood Pills can make further improvement through cultivation difficult 37.
Equipment / Items
- Iron Mountain Fist manuals — Keeps the school’s instructional texts and grants access to successive sections as students progress 3 7 33.
- Qi and Blood Pills — Normally takes one every two months to maintain flourishing Qi and blood. His own need for the pills increases the financial burden of supporting disciples 32 43.
- Grand Pharmacy supplies — Obtains the ingredients and prescription for the school’s replenishing soup from the Grand Pharmacy; Mr. Yan personally delivers Qi and Blood Pills 32.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Accepting Zhang Lingfeng
Guo Wei initially considers nineteen-year-old Zhang Lingfeng too old to begin training. Although the newcomer has superior aptitude, his closed bones sharply limit Guo Wei’s expectations. After receiving 290 taels for a year’s tuition and medicinal decoctions, he admits him and provides the first fist manual 3.
Zhang Lingfeng reaches Ming Jin after two months and one day. Impressed, Guo Wei accepts him as a formal disciple, waives future tuition, and teaches him the middle section. When Zhang Da later visits with apprenticeship gifts, Guo Wei warmly receives father and son and returns the fifty-tael tuition payment 7 8.
Nurturing Ye Fan
Ye Fan’s exceptional bone structure prompts Guo Wei to admit him directly into the inner courtyard, provide lodging, and personally supervise his training. His unusually devoted treatment leads other disciples to regard Ye Fan as the likely successor 15.
Guo Wei helps Ye Fan reach Ming Jin, but the boy later attempts Dark Force prematurely and without permission. The failure disappoints Guo Wei, who had intended a longer period of consolidation. Ye Fan eventually reaches Dark Force with continued support 17 23 32.
Reconsidering His Successor
Zhang Lingfeng privately reveals his Dark Force cultivation to Guo Wei after roughly one year and two months of training. Astonished that he advanced before Ye Fan despite his closed bones, Guo Wei rewards him with a Qi and Blood Pill and begins treating him as another potential Transforming Jin disciple 32 33.
Guo Wei attends Zhang Lingfeng’s breakthrough banquet and praises him as the school’s rising star. His increased attention also serves as a warning to Ye Fan that exceptional aptitude does not make him irreplaceable 38 39.
Later, Guo Wei contributes three hundred taels toward Zhang Lingfeng’s purchase of an eleven-hundred-tael pill, handing over one reserved for his own use. After Zhang Lingfeng defeats Ye Fan, Guo Wei openly admits that he misjudged him. He considers accepting him as his personal disciple but decides to observe him for several more months; the inheritance remains unassigned 43 44.
Relationships
- Zhang Lingfeng — Disciple and emerging successor candidate. Guo Wei increasingly values his diligence, social judgment, and unexpected cultivation potential 33 44.
- Ye Fan — Favored disciple whom Guo Wei regards much like a son. His impatience and poor composure repeatedly strain Guo Wei’s hopes for him 23 39 44.
- Zhang Da — Zhang Lingfeng’s father. His generous apprenticeship gifts earn Guo Wei’s warm hospitality 8.
- Wu Yun — Dark Force disciple employed by the Yan Lineage; his monthly stipend illustrates the school’s income-sharing arrangement 9 43.
- Mr. Yan — Grand Pharmacy representative who personally delivers Guo Wei’s Qi and Blood Pills 32.
