Bo Xubai only arrived after Wen Ning and Bo Yan had finished giving their statements.
He had thought it was just a scam call. He received plenty of those normally, and basically blocked every number that called.
Bo Xubai had never imagined that this time it would be real!
And the person kidnapped was Wen Ning!
On the way there, Bo Xubai had cursed those kidnappers a thousand times over in his mind, slicing them into a thousand pieces for good measure!
Why did it have to happen at a time like this! His father was coming back tomorrow, and there were already some problems with the joint project with the Wen Family. Now that something had happened to Wen Ning, her father would definitely cling to the Bo Group even more relentlessly. He might even seize the chance to kick them while they were down...
Even now, Bo Xubai refused to acknowledge what Bo Yan had said yesterday morning.
A favored son of heaven who had basked in admiration since childhood would never admit his mistakes, because he would never allow himself to fail.
But when he saw Wen Ning's parents at the police station, Bo Xubai still broke into a cold sweat.
They did not reproach him in public, but their gazes were cold, with a faint trace of disappointment.
Bo Xubai's heart immediately tightened. When had the two elders ever looked at him like that? They had always admired him, even sparing no effort to support his career!
Bo Xubai immediately understood that this had truly crossed their bottom line, and hurried to apologize without a second thought.
Of course, he did not believe this kidnapping was his fault.
They should go after the kidnappers. What the hell did it have to do with him? He was a victim too, okay?
Still, before Wen Ning's parents, Bo Xubai showed all the sincerity he could muster.
He did not want them looking at him like that. It made him anxious and uneasy...
Wen Ning's mother truly had admired Bo Xubai before. But ever since he had cheated while engaged, she could no longer stand anything about him.
Unfortunately, their daughter had liked him before, so the two elders could only turn a blind eye.
Now that their daughter had finally come to her senses, they were delighted-and could at last express their displeasure with this boy from the Bo Family.
Wen Ning's father smiled, looking as genial and easygoing as the Laughing Buddha, and said meaningfully, "You've been very busy lately, President Bo."
That "President Bo" made Bo Xubai's heart jolt. Wen Ning's father usually called him A-Xu. When had he ever been so distant?
He hurriedly bowed slightly, adopting the respectful posture of a junior before an elder. "Lately, I have been a little..."
He was the very picture of politeness and humility.
Seeing this, Wen Ning's mother gave a faint twitch of her lips. Ignoring his answer, she said, "I heard those kidnappers called you first."
Bo Xubai's back stiffened.
Then he heard her sigh. "A-Xu, we watched you grow up. No matter what grievances you have against our Wen Family, you shouldn't take things this far... Wouldn't you say your Auntie Rong is right?"
Bo Xubai was almost breaking into a cold sweat. Only by clenching his fists tightly did he keep himself from showing too much fear.
It was only Wen Ning who had been kidnapped, yet Bai Rong had dragged the entire Wen Family into it!
Sure enough, the Wen Family would not let the Bo Group off so easily!
Normally, Bo Xubai could still have found a way to make amends, but his father was coming back tomorrow. Now he was truly beginning to feel afraid.
He adopted his most sincere attitude and apologized repeatedly.
But Wen Haichuan and Bai Rong merely smiled, paying him no heed.
Then Bai Rong turned and waved to her daughter and son-in-law, who had come out after giving their statements.
"The driver's outside. I had Auntie Zhao make your favorite fish with pickled mustard greens. Let's go home and wash away all that bad luck." As she spoke, Bai Rong shot Bo Xubai, whose head was still lowered, a disdainful look.
Wen Ning had actually finished several minutes earlier, but she had not come out immediately. Instead, she had pulled Bo Yan, Wen Jing, and Tian Xin behind a wall to watch the show.
Watching her parents slaughter Bo Xubai without spilling a drop of blood, leaving not a scrap of his armor intact, Wen Ning was utterly awestruck!
So this was high society!
She had thought everyone would just launch straight into a fight. That was how all those domineering CEO short dramas went, after all!
Wen Ning increasingly felt that this place was nothing like a novel world. Everyone around her seemed to be growing more vivid and alive.
Just like now: her parents maintained their impeccable manners and effortlessly breached Bo Xubai's defenses without losing a single soldier.
Bo Xubai thought he was calm, composed, and showing no fear, but in the eyes of those two old foxes, he was practically a child playing house.
It looked like Bo Yan was right. She really should not watch too many short dramas. They could affect her IQ.
Wen Ning could not help giving the two elders a thumbs-up.
Wen Jing followed her example and gave his parents a thumbs-up.
Tian Xin was still out of the loop-after all, even now, no one had told her that Wen Ning had already "transferred her affections" and "fallen in love" with Bo Yan. But none of that mattered. All she had to do was copy them, so she gave a thumbs-up too.
Afterward, the three exchanged looks before turning in unison toward Bo Yan.
Bo Yan, who was leaning against the wall, detached from the others and once again shutting himself off from the world: "..."
Bo Yan turned his head away expressionlessly, looking as though he disdained their company.
Wen Ning clicked her tongue. "Don't be such a loner."
As she spoke, she forcibly pulled out Bo Yan's left hand, pried open his palm, and raised his thumb toward her parents.
Bo Yan's resistance proved futile. In the end, he could only defend his dignity to the death with his deadpan face-as he gave them a thumbs-up.
Seeing the four youngsters hiding nearby, clowning around with their thumbs raised, Wen Ning's parents could not help laughing. Their mood finally improved a little.
Hearing their laughter, Bo Xubai looked up too.
And there he saw the four people fooling around in the corner.
He did not know what Wen Ning said to that bastard. The bastard turned his head away, looking utterly unwilling, but only a few seconds later, he crouched down with his back to her.
Wen Ning hopped onto that bastard's back with a radiant smile, as intimate as though they really were husband and wife.
Bo Xubai gritted his teeth. The flames of hatred blazed fiercely, and his fists tightened further at his sides.
Over there, Bo Yan walked steadily toward them with Wen Ning on his back.
When he saw Bo Xubai, Bo Yan's eyes curved as he smiled faintly and greeted him politely. "Big brother."
That greeting made Bo Xubai's face darken until it looked ready to drip!
What disgusted him most was Bo Yan's mask. He pretended to be so good-tempered, when he was really a cold-blooded, heartless monster who could even kill his stepfather and biological mother!
A monster insisting on pretending to be human-how nauseating!
But he still suppressed the fury in his chest and gave Bo Yan a lukewarm nod in response before looking at Wen Ning on his back.
He wanted to apologize to Wen Ning, but it was as though a wad of cotton had lodged in his throat. He simply could not get the words out.
In the past, Wen Ning had always chased after him. If he was in a good mood, he would spare her a glance. If not, he would not even acknowledge her.
Now he was supposed to apologize to a woman he had never taken seriously before. Naturally, he could not do it.
Watching him dither there annoyed Wen Ning. This thing could actually be the male lead?
He wanted to win over the Wen Family, yet refused to bow his head and apologize. No wonder the Bo Group's employees were of that caliber.
Ugh!
She patted Bo Yan's shoulder, signaling for him to leave quickly. They needed to get away from the brain-dead idiot before it became contagious.
Bo Yan turned his head to look at her. After confirming that she did not intend to curse anyone out, he gave Bo Xubai a slight nod and walked away.
Once the Wen Family left, Bo Xubai was the only one remaining outside the police station apart from the officers coming and going.
He stood there, watching Bo Yan leave with the Wen Family, the hatred in his eyes almost spilling over!
Everyone in this world could be happy except that bastard!
He did not deserve it!
Bo Yan, who did not deserve happiness, had fallen silent the moment he got into the car.
He was usually quite quiet anyway, so Wen Ning noticed nothing amiss.
She felt around in her pocket, discovered she still had Bo Yan's phone, and held it out to him.
Only after she called him several times did Bo Yan come back to his senses and reach for it.
But when he took hold of the phone, Wen Ning refused to let go.
The two remained at an impasse.
Bo Yan's brows drew together slightly, and he looked up at her in confusion.
Their eyes met. Wen Ning suddenly smiled, her red lips parting as she looked into his eyes and recited each word distinctly. "Don't. Be. Afraid. I'm. Here."
Wen Ning beamed. "Who knew my baby was so good at this~"
Bo Yan's pupils trembled, and his heart gave a hard, heavy thump.
The next second-
"Hic."
The car instantly fell so quiet that a falling pin could have been heard.
A few seconds later-
"Hic."
A deep flush spread across Bo Yan's face, reaching even the corners of his eyes. Surprise and bewilderment flashed through his beautiful peach-blossom eyes, as though he had never imagined he could make such a mortifying noise!
Keeping his face rigid, he hurriedly turned toward the window and ignored Wen Ning.
But every now and then, another soft hiccup escaped him.
Wen Ning really could not hold it in any longer and burst out laughing.
Hearing Wen Ning's laughter, Bo Yan sank further into despair. He closed his eyes and thought, I might as well just die...
