Power Progression

Background / History

Kaido served as an apprentice aboard Rocks’s ship. During that period, he became Charlotte Linlin’s lover to survive among the crew’s stronger members. After God Valley fell, Linlin gave him the Mythical Zoan Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Divine Dragon. Following Yamato’s birth, Kaido secretly fled with their child and hid in Wano Country 180 337.

Kaido initially avoided openly confronting Kozuki Oden, spending five years consolidating his strength. Oden was ultimately deceived by Kurozumi’s intervention and left an opening that proved decisive. Kaido and Kurozumi Orochi then established control over Wano, while surviving opponents of their rule were imprisoned in Udon 337 377 397.

As an Emperor, Kaido commanded numerous subordinate pirate crews and pursued the creation of a corps of three hundred Devil Fruit users. Doflamingo’s ability to supply Artificial Devil Fruits made their alliance central to this ambition. Wano also served as a weapons factory for the World Government 119 173 390.

Appearance

• Normal appearance: An enormous, roughly featured man, frequently shown drinking inside Onigashima’s skull-shaped castle 77 205.
• Dragon form: A massive divine dragon with azure scales, blood-red eyes, claws, and a long, coiling body 149 176 376.
• Human-dragon form: A third state that Kaido considered his strongest form, suited to fully exploiting his combat abilities 414.
• Devil form: A blood-red creature approximately twelve or thirteen meters tall, with horns, wings, and fleshy tendrils. His later transformation also displayed pointed jaws, fangs, and ragged batlike wings 416 418 588.

Personality

Kaido is boastful, violent, and intensely sensitive to humiliation. He initially dismissed Bai Yu as an inexperienced child and repeatedly insisted that nobody could kill him. Publicly losing face—whether through Jack’s death, breached defenses, or interference with his revenge—often drove him into a rage 77 151 179 279.

Drinking and suicide attempts are recurring habits. He survived dozens of captures and treated his inability to die as something to boast about. King regarded him as perpetually attempting suicide or searching for another way to do so 119.

His apparent recklessness does not exclude calculation. He helped Orochi seize Wano, valued Doflamingo chiefly for his Artificial Devil Fruit production, and defended Orochi only because the shogun could buy time against Bai Yu. He regarded ordinary subordinate crews as disposable cannon fodder 119 205 384.

His pride repeatedly obstructed practical decisions. He concealed his Eight Gates training because the technique came from Bai Yu and initially rejected the Five Elders’ recommendation to use Devil’s Medicine. King frequently had to persuade him to prioritize survival or strategy over wounded dignity 181 337 416 427.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Pursuit of the Fourth Admiral

Kaido initially mocked Bai Yu’s appointment as the Fourth Admiral. After Doflamingo reported that Bai Yu had killed a pirate affiliated with the Beasts Pirates, Jack sought permission to retaliate. Kaido expected Jack to capture Bai Yu, only to learn that Jack had been overwhelmingly killed 77 119 150.

Vowing revenge, Kaido borrowed Violet from Doflamingo to locate Bai Yu. On reaching Dressrosa, he discovered Doflamingo’s death and threatened to massacre the country because his Artificial Devil Fruit ambitions had been ruined. Bai Yu diverted him by issuing a direct challenge 151 153 173.

Bai Yu knocked Kaido from the sky and eventually breached his defenses, then escaped into the sea. Kaido turned his anger on the nearby Marines, but Garp intercepted his Dragon Breath. King persuaded Kaido to withdraw rather than risk a wider war 176 178 179 180 181.

Cooperation with the Five Elders

After learning that Bai Yu had survived and killed Edward Weevil, Kaido accepted Nusjuro’s proposal to cooperate against him. He subsequently joined Charlotte Linlin’s side of the conflict and planned to ambush Bai Yu around his duel with Mihawk at Kalles Island 204 205 241 269.

The attempted interception drew opposition from Mihawk, Jinbe, Shanks, and Whitebeard. Kaido continued threatening battle until Garp arrived, making the prospect of a fight to the death credible enough to force his retreat 277 278 279 280.

Emperor Alliance and the Fall of Wano

Kaido renewed his alliance with Linlin to strike Bai Yu before he could retaliate. They arranged a public banquet and invited Bai Yu, while Queen and the Flying Six remained behind to guard Wano 337 364.

At the banquet, Kaido and Linlin protected Blackbeard from Whitebeard. The confrontation collapsed when King reported that Bai Yu had invaded Wano, defeated Queen, and captured the Flying Six. Kaido struck Blackbeard in anger and rushed home 375 376.

His remote orders failed to delay Bai Yu. Orochi attempted to surrender, and Kaido returned to find his military position devastated. At Udon, he overpowered Yamato before confronting Bai Yu alongside the Five Elders 383 384 398 403.

First Death

During the decisive battle, Kaido lost Hassaikai and recognized Bai Yu’s oppressive strength as comparable to Rocks. Bai Yu severed his arm, then beheaded him despite his Fifth Gate release. The crimson pill transformed him into a regenerating devil, but Bai Yu ultimately cut that body apart 412 413 415 416 418.

Kaido’s burned-out Vivre Card confirmed his death. News of his defeat spread alongside Wano’s decision to open its borders, breaking one corner of the Four Emperors’ balance 422 425.

Resurrection and Second Death

The Five Elders resurrected Kaido and several other slain pirates through science. Although suspicious of being controlled, Kaido welcomed another opportunity to confront Bai Yu 521.

He later attacked Marines while believing Bai Yu was trapped elsewhere. Akainu suppressed him with the Sixth Gate and struck him with Seventh Gate Daytime Tiger, prompting Kaido to take Devil’s Medicine again 586 587 588.

Four fighters then overwhelmed his transformed body with coordinated martial-arts attacks. Kaido begged Killer to save him, only to see Bai Yu arrive. Accumulated internal force shattered his body, killing him a second time 588 589 646.
