Background / History

Windmill Village and Departure

A reincarnator retaining memories of his previous life, Bai Yu was adopted by Garp and raised alongside Ace, Luffy, and Sabo. Garp’s harsh training and his own unusual maturity allowed him to maintain his position as their eldest brother. He also became a daily visitor to Makino’s tavern, developing an exceptional tolerance for alcohol 1 2.

His system finally activated when Ace challenged him for the title of big brother before setting sail. After obtaining his first template, Bai Yu defeated Ace with a wooden sword, injuring his shoulder. He nevertheless helped Ace depart and announced his own intention to become the “Marine King,” partly so he could retrieve his brothers if they were imprisoned 1 2 4.

Rise to Fourth Admiral

Bai Yu accepted an invitation to join Marine Headquarters and received Haki instruction from Bogard. On his voyage, he sought powerful opponents, acquired Murasame, fought Koshiro, and developed increasingly unconventional sword techniques 7 17 21 23 32.

His encounters with Golden Lion, Enel, and Akainu established his strength beyond that of an ordinary recruit. At headquarters, his three types of Haki, Great Swordmaster-level techniques, and darkness powers convinced observers that he qualified for an Admiral’s seat. He subsequently became known as the Fourth Admiral, War Demon Bai Yu 60 61 67 74 75 85.

Shichibukai Missions and the Five Elders

The Five Elders repeatedly used assignments and hostile encounters to put Bai Yu in danger. They regarded his youth, rapid growth, unpredictable conduct, and relationship with Garp as a potential threat comparable to Dragon’s influence 149 163.

An assignment to invite Ace into the Shichibukai brought Bai Yu directly to the Whitebeard Pirates. Ace publicly identified him as his sworn elder brother, interrupting Bai Yu’s confrontation with Whitebeard. Bai Yu then severely injured Ace in three moves before saving him; Whitebeard later invited Bai Yu to become his son 135 136 141.

Bai Yu killed Jack, defeated and killed Doflamingo, and confronted Kaido at Dressrosa. Although he breached Kaido’s defenses, the encounter exposed the limitations of fighting an Emperor without Conqueror’s Haki coating 146 155 175 177 178 185.

Whole Cake Island and the Mihawk Duel

When Gion was captured through a scheme involving Kaido and the Five Elders, Bai Yu refused to wait for reinforcements. He considered her danger his responsibility and set off alone for Whole Cake Island 249.

He defeated Charlotte Linlin and escaped with support he had arranged through Law. Jinbe also assisted, acknowledging Bai Yu’s actions on behalf of Fish-Man Island. Afterward, Bai Yu recovered from using the Eight Gates and prepared for his approaching duel with Mihawk 270 273.

The duel pushed his swordsmanship toward the state of Void. His body began evading along incoming blades almost reflexively, and he developed Six Paths Five Rings: Kurikara Tensho by integrating his accumulated abilities with Miyamoto Musashi’s techniques 282 284.

Departure from the Marines

Bai Yu’s conflict with the Five Elders culminated in a confrontation at Mary Geoise. Reports claimed Nusjuro had killed him, prompting grief and rage from Ace, but Bai Yu soon reappeared at Marineford 321 324 331 332.

He subsequently lost his Admiral identity and left Marine Headquarters. Traveling with Ace, he rejected another invitation to join Whitebeard and instead headed to Han’erbana to recruit a companion who could help him escape dangerous situations 337 338.

Wano and Pirate Sovereignty

At Wano’s estuary, Bai Yu and his two giant subordinates devastated the Beasts Pirates, and Bai Yu killed Queen. He later reassured Hiyori that he had come to kill Orochi and Kaido 366 380.

Facing a trap involving four of the Five Elders and Kaido, Bai Yu chose battle rather than submission. He combined extreme offensive power with Creation Rebirth and underwent a disturbing change in demeanor during the fighting 402 411 414 415 417.

Bai Yu killed Kaido and Nusjuro in Wano, attaining a reputation beyond the Four Emperors and becoming the sovereign figure in a newly described order of “three emperors and one sovereign.” Nusjuro’s repeated returns from death complicated the apparent finality of those victories 377 425 479.

Other Worlds and the Conflict with Imu

Bai Yu’s system opened access to other worlds through dungeon instances. In Konoha, he identified the era of Madara and Hashirama’s final battle; in the One-Punch world, the system assigned him the identity of Tornado’s childhood-arranged fiancé. Tornado later accompanied him back to his original world 455 525 536.

Against Blackbeard’s Devil’s Medicine-enhanced forces, Bai Yu killed Shiryu, Burgess, Catarina Devon, and the other attacking prisoners. He then cut Blackbeard’s thousand-meter demon-dragon body eighteen times with one swift strike, splitting the clouds overhead 476 477.

As Imu’s threat grew, Bai Yu arranged cooperation between Akainu and Whitebeard’s side while he spent extended periods obtaining power elsewhere. In Fairy Tail, he eliminated Phantom Lord, stopped Laxus’s uprising, and became the tenth of the Ten Wizard Saints, though defeating Jose did not complete the nightmare-level dungeon 590 679 682.

After returning from Fairy Tail with Tornado, Bai Yu found an apparently lifeless stretch of sea. He obtained the Jōgan, located the ongoing battle, and rushed toward a ruined Marineford being ravaged by enormous roots and fanged maws 736.

Appearance

Bai Yu is introduced as a black-robed youth whose eyes seem older than his years 1.

Personality

Bai Yu’s defining trait is his appetite for dangerous combat. He judges opponents by whether they are “worth cutting” and often welcomes attempts on his life as opportunities to fight and advance his templates. Kenpachi Zaraki’s template intensifies his excitement at the prospect of battle 10 54 135 249.

His recklessness is not an absence of planning. He conceals abilities, arranges escape routes, and deliberately allows enemies to underestimate how many trump cards he possesses. Before leaving Whole Cake Island, he had already positioned Law and secured a whale submarine 270 295.

He is protective of his companions without being comfortable receiving earnest concern himself. He accepts responsibility for Gion’s capture, warns Ace about Blackbeard, and tells Bastille that he will shoulder the consequences if trouble reaches the people under his care 249 309 310 314.

Away from battle, he is irreverent, teasing, and fond of drinking. He frequently needles Ace about being his little brother and uses exaggerated excuses to avoid admitting favoritism.
