Background and History

Rocks Pirates

Whitebeard once served aboard Rocks’ ship alongside Golden Lion, Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, and Shakky. He credited Shakky’s intelligence network with helping the Rocks Pirates recruit powerful members and repeatedly escape Marine and World Government encirclements 100 481 482.

Although he disliked the Rocks Pirates’ survival-based order, Zero’s betrayal of the crew left an even deeper impression. After founding his own crew, Whitebeard made the prohibition against betrayal its foremost rule: traitors would be hunted down regardless of how far they fled 499.

Establishing His Own Crew

Whitebeard built his crew around a familial bond, accepting members as his sons and placing loyalty at the center of life aboard his ship. His forces eventually included sixteen divisions with 1,600 members and forty-three affiliated crews numbering nearly 30,000 pirates 131 484.

His reputation endured despite deteriorating health. Marco maintained his condition through IV treatment and the Phoenix Fruit’s abilities, while accumulated battle damage and the side effects of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit continued to burden his body 75 373.

Recruiting Ace

Whitebeard traveled to the first half of the Grand Line to find Fire Fist Ace, then a rookie captain with a 120-million-Beli bounty. After encountering Ace and Jinbe during their duel, he defeated Ace immediately and took the Spade Pirates into his custody 93 131.

Ace repeatedly tried to attack him over the following days, without success. Whitebeard tolerated the challenges because of Ace’s potential, his resemblance to Oden, and his willingness to fight recklessly for his companions. Ace eventually agreed to become his son on the condition that the crew help him grow strong enough to defeat a particular opponent. Whitebeard welcomed him with a banquet and encouraged him to aim at surpassing his new captain 131.

From Opponent to Ally of Bai Yu

Bai Yu’s arrival aboard the Moby Dick initially provoked Whitebeard into attacking: the Marine admiral publicly invited his newly accepted son to join the Shichibukai. Ace stopped the confrontation by revealing that Bai Yu was his sworn elder brother. Their brotherly loyalty persuaded Whitebeard to put away Murakumogiri and restrain his crew 134 135.

Whitebeard subsequently took an active interest in Bai Yu’s safety. He tried to reach him before Kaido did, mobilized toward Totto Land after learning that Bai Yu had gone alone to rescue Gion, and later joined Shanks in opposing another attack by Kaido. Garp’s arrival finally persuaded Kaido to withdraw 174 250 280.

Afterward, Whitebeard offered Bai Yu command of a proposed Zeroth Division. Bai Yu declined, and Whitebeard accepted the refusal while leaving open the possibility of asking again 287.

The Four Emperors Alliance Trap

The Five Elders targeted Whitebeard partly because of his growing closeness to Bai Yu. Ace brought warnings from Bai Yu and Shanks that the Totto Land banquet was a trap, but Whitebeard regarded the invitation as a challenge to his crew’s dignity. He attended with his division commanders and affiliated fleets, prepared to make any attempt on his life costly 359 360 361 368.

During the confrontation, Catarina Devon impersonated the trusted Great Whirlpool Spider and stabbed Whitebeard through the chest. The attack used Armament Haki and Ryuo to shatter his heart. Whitebeard recognized the imposture from the attacker’s sword technique, but his injury left him unable to withstand the combined pressure of Kaido and Charlotte Linlin. When Katakuri joined their Haki assault, Whitebeard pushed Ace away and ordered his sons to flee 370 371 372.

A bean supplied by Bai Yu healed the chest wound and some of Whitebeard’s longstanding internal injuries. Restored to fighting condition, he personally attacked Teach with Haki-coated slashes, severely wounding him despite his Dark-Dark Fruit defenses 373 374 375.

Once Kaido departed and Teach escaped, Whitebeard refused to remain at the banquet. He announced that the crew would visit Wano Country to fulfill Oden’s wish 377.

Final Campaign in Totto Land

Bai Yu later visited the Moby Dick with Shakky and presented Whitebeard’s crew with Blackbeard’s severed head. The gift resolved a revenge the commanders had feared would require their aging father to risk his life 481 482 483.

Whitebeard then ordered all sixteen divisions and forty-three affiliated crews to assemble in Totto Land. His purpose was to demonstrate that the old era could not simply be dismissed. Leading the attack himself, he split Whole Cake Island and devastated its defenses with repeated quake attacks 484 494 495 496.

The battle turned when Charlotte Linlin and her allies transformed into devils. Linlin seized Murakumogiri, crushed its surrounding shock waves, and altered the weapon so that it attacked Whitebeard. Ace intercepted the surprise strike 497 498.

After Bai Yu defeated the devils, Whitebeard openly acknowledged that the younger fighter had surpassed him. He announced his intention to hand the Whitebeard Pirates to his sons after leaving Totto Land, allowing them to decide whether to accept Bai Yu’s recruitment offer. He then invited survivors of the old era aboard the Moby Dick for a drink 505.

Loss of His Fruit and Defense of Marineford

Whitebeard later discovered that he could no longer activate the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. Despite this loss, he remained capable of destroying a Parasite String controlling one of his men 542 543.

At Marineford, he joined the defense against attacking Sea Kings, cutting one in half and helping relieve the Marines’ defensive line. His reduced condition made him vulnerable to Killer’s spatial ambush; an armored figure identified as Iron Man intervened before the attack could kill him 655 658.

Whitebeard remained present in the final confrontation with Ōtsutsuki Imu, preparing alongside Shanks to withstand the giant tree’s counterattack before Bai Yu returned 737.

Appearance

Whitebeard is an elderly, powerfully built man whose imposing figure is compared to an iron tower 280 368.

• Crescent-shaped white mustache: His most recognizable feature, also represented on his crew’s flag 131 280.
• White hair and deep forehead wrinkles: Prominent signs of his advanced age 505.
• Stooped back: By the end of the Totto Land campaign, his formerly upright posture has visibly become hunched 505.

Personality

Whitebeard treats his crew as family rather than merely subordinates. Ace’s determination to protect his companions was central to winning his affection, and he reassured Ace that returning safely mattered more than pursuing Teach alone. Even when his commanders apologized for failing to shoulder his burdens, Whitebeard told them that simply being alive was enough 131 360 505.

His paternal affection coexists with an uncompromising hatred of betrayal. Teach’s murder of Thatch convinced him that even a former son had to be killed for violating the ship’s rules 360 499.

Whitebeard is also proud, combative, and sensitive to challenges against his crew’s standing. He attended the alliance banquet despite warnings because refusing would concede prestige to Kaido and Linlin. Nevertheless, he could judge when further fighting served no purpose, restraining Ace from attacking Poseidon after Bai Yu was believed dead. Ultimately, he proved willing to acknowledge both his age and Bai Yu’s superiority 332 361 505.

Tremor-Tremor Fruit

Whitebeard’s former Devil Fruit generated destructive vibrations and quake waves. Its destructive power was explicitly placed above Charlotte Linlin’s Soul-Soul Fruit during their clash 370 495.
