Background / History

Senju Heritage and Interest in Uya

Tsunade is the First Hokage Hashirama Senju’s granddaughter and a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi. Her younger brother, Nawaki, has died by the time she campaigns for reforms to Konoha’s battlefield medical system 111 205.

During the Academy’s practical combat ranking assessment, she supports Uya while Jiraiya favors Minato Namikaze. Impressed by Uya’s performance, she decides to take him as an apprentice before they have formally met 28 32 43.

When Konoha permits Uya’s death match against Uchiha Kan, Tsunade confronts Hiruzen. She rejects his suggestion that Danzo might save Uya after his defeat, recognizing that such an intervention could turn the child into a controlled killing tool. She rushes to stop the duel, but Uchiha Kageyama blocks her until the fighting ends 43.

Tsunade reaches the arena expecting the worst, only to find Uya alive and Kan dead. She then rebukes Kageyama for directing killing intent at him. During their first conversation, she accepts “Big Sister” as Uya’s form of address and anticipates leading his team after graduation. After examining his unusually strong body, she leaves him a Monstrous Strength training scroll 46 47 48 52.

Second Shinobi World War

In the Land of Rain, Tsunade leads a team pursued by Iwagakure forces. Her medical skills and chakra concealment prolong their escape, but dwindling chakra prevents her from treating her own serious wounds. Her remaining companions sacrifice themselves to help her survive, including Hyuga Ushin, who dies during a breakout 105 106.

A masked Uya rescues her and reveals his identity afterward. Astonished by his growth, she nevertheless insists that he continue calling her “big sister.” He carries her to a concealed tree hollow, where she can recover chakra and heal 111 112.

During their recovery period, Uya teaches her Soru and prompts her to consider developing the Strength of a Hundred Technique. On their return journey, they encounter Chiyo’s Sunagakure unit; Tsunade fights the accompanying ninja while Uya faces Chiyo 116 117 119.

Tsunade later holds off Iwagakure’s Anbu Captain during the confrontation involving Ōnoki. Against Hanzo, she supplies her allies with poison countermeasures and attempts to protect Jiraiya, but Hanzo counters her attack and Uya intercepts his follow-up strike. Reports subsequently credit Uya and the Sannin with defeating Hanzo 153 160 161 169.

Medical Reform and Disillusionment

After developing the Strength of a Hundred Technique, Tsunade reunites with Uya at Konoha’s headquarters in the Land of Wind. She later proposes dedicated medical-nin training institutions and the inclusion of medical-nin in mission squads, arguing that the system would sharply reduce casualties. Her determination is tied to her grief over Nawaki 195 205.

Her relationship with Konoha’s leadership deteriorates over its treatment of Uya and its wartime weakening of the major clans. The Senju suffer especially heavily because of their willingness to defend the village without reservation. By the Third Shinobi World War, their near-destruction has left Tsunade deeply resentful toward Hiruzen and the other leaders 299 300.

Despite that resentment, she cannot simply abandon the village her grandfather founded. When Hiruzen asks her to obtain Uya’s assistance, she agrees only after securing his promise to accept any conditions Uya demands—even the Hokage position 300.

Joining and Leading Amegakure

In Amegakure, Uya asks Tsunade to stay, citing the village’s need for skilled medical-nin and a medical training institute. Kushina also encourages her to remain. Uya subsequently makes Tsunade’s residence in Amegakure a condition of his intervention in the war, and Hiruzen accepts 302 309.

Tsunade is away gambling during Nagato’s later attack on Amegakure. Feeling guilty afterward, she volunteers to handle the village’s administration. Although Uya initially remains leader in name, she manages its affairs in practice, assisted by Shizune 356.

Uya formally leaves the leadership position to her before the Five Kage peace talks. At the summit, Tsunade identifies herself as Amegakure’s new leader and demands supplies and territory in exchange for the return of the captured Tailed Beasts. When Ōnoki and Rasa challenge her standing, Uya intervenes and forcibly humiliates Rasa 357 359 360.

Later Leadership and the Fourth Shinobi World War

Tsunade supports entering Konoha’s Chunin Exams to demonstrate Amegakure’s strength. However, after learning of Orochimaru’s planned attack, she chooses neither to attend nor interfere, maintaining her decision to stop involving herself in Konoha’s affairs 430 464.

At the Six Kage Summit, she agrees to join the alliance against the emerging wartime threat. The other villages resist placing her in command until Uya explicitly endorses her as commander-in-chief 483.

From headquarters, Tsunade coordinates the Allied Shinobi Forces alongside Shikaku Nara. When Madara Uchiha appears, she orders the First, Second, and Fourth Divisions to reinforce the battlefield rather than immediately ask Uya to intervene. She later prepares to join the Five Kage herself, but Uya arrives and tells her to remain at headquarters 484 487 489.

Appearance

  • Hair: Pale gold 111.
  • Complexion and build: Fair-skinned, with a notably large bust 32 356.
  • Forehead mark: Develops a mark between her brows after creating the Strength of a Hundred Technique; it is later described as a diamond-shaped Yin Seal 195 329.

Personality

Tsunade is outspoken, quick-tempered, and willing to confront powerful figures directly. Her anger over Uya’s death match drives her to challenge both Hiruzen and the Uchiha clan head. With people she likes, that forcefulness becomes teasing familiarity, including forehead flicks, threateningly raised fists, and insistence on informal forms of address 32 43 47 111.

She respects effort as well as talent. Uya’s physical toughness impresses her because she understands how much difficult training it must have required. Her protectiveness begins before their first proper meeting and later extends to proposing that the wall between their rooms be opened to discourage assassins 48 157.

Gambling is her most persistent vice. Repeated losses do not discourage her, and she becomes increasingly enthusiastic even while losing to Kushina. Her responsibilities as Amekage restrict her opportunities to leave the village for gambling 380.

Despite her casual behavior outside work, Tsunade is a conscientious administrator. She finishes reviewing a document before addressing Uya and remains composed under the scrutiny of the Five Kage. Her leadership also shows a desire not to depend on Uya for every crisis 356 360 487.

Abilities & Skills

Medical Ninjutsu and Detoxification

Tsunade’s medical ninjutsu reaches the pinnacle of the field. Her healing and detoxification skills surpass Chiyo’s, repeatedly countering Sunagakure’s battlefield poisons 117 429.

  • Examines Uya’s internal condition by sending chakra through his body 48.
  • Heals her own wounds once sufficient chakra has recovered; exhaustion can prevent treatment even when time is available 106 111 112.
  • Supplies medicine that temporarily prevents poisoning and injectable treatment for allies who are already poisoned 160.
  • Heals Karin’s bite scars and teaches her medical ninjutsu, though Karin shows only mediocre aptitude for conventional healing techniques 427.
  • Helps develop Karin’s touch-based healing alongside Orochimaru, Uya, and Kushina 429.

Her clinical expertise does not make her an equally capable researcher. She and Kushina cannot independently determine how to develop Karin’s unusual healing constitution 427.

Monstrous Strength

Monstrous Strength uses precise chakra control to release an instantaneous burst of enhanced physical power. Its effectiveness depends on chakra control, quality, and quantity 52.

  • Her stronger chakra allows her Monstrous Strength to exceed Uya’s in a sparring exchange where he does not use the Power of Tremors 116.
  • Shatters an incoming Earth Release technique with a punch 119.
  • Provides the foundation from which Uya develops Soru 116.
  • Cannot match the destructive output of Uya’s Shockwave Slash during her rescue 107.

Chakra Control and Concealment

Her medical training gives Tsunade exceptionally precise control over chakra 105.

  • Conceals chakra fluctuations effectively enough to hinder sensory detection while evading Iwagakure 105.
  • Makes falling rain slide off her body, keeping her clothes dry 122.
  • Applies that control to both internal medical examinations and strength enhancement 48 52.

Soru

Tsunade learns Soru directly from Uya after he develops it from Monstrous Strength 116.

  • Masters the technique rapidly because of her familiarity with its underlying chakra method 116.
  • Initially moves more slowly than Uya because her physique is less developed 116.
  • Uses it alongside Kage-level strength to make interception difficult during wartime travel 300.

Constitution and Strength of a Hundred

Tsunade possesses substantial natural recovery even before developing the Strength of a Hundred Technique. After her rescue, her physical stamina returns far faster than her chakra 111.

  • Develops the Strength of a Hundred Technique earlier through Uya’s guidance 116 195.
  • Bears its associated diamond-shaped forehead seal 329.
  • Gains powerful recovery, though the technique remains inferior to the self-healing of Uya’s completed Sage Body 320 396.

Sage Body Training

Katsuyu initially judges Tsunade unsuitable for senjutsu and warns that forcing the training could have serious consequences 248 249.

  • Later completes the first two stages of Uya’s Sage Body training with almost no obstacles 380.
  • Her Senju bloodline and abundant chakra make those stages especially easy 380.
  • Becomes eligible to train in Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode, but no completed mastery is documented 380.

Sealing and Summoning

  • Four Symbols Seal: Can perform this seal, but does not offer to perform the Eight Trigrams Seal when Kushina requires resealing; Mirei Uzumaki undertakes that task instead 268.
  • Katsuyu: Her summoned beast. Tsunade brings Uya to Katsuyu’s main body in Shikkotsu Forest to investigate senjutsu 247 248 249.

Administration and Command

Tsunade handles Amegakure’s routine governance, foreign negotiations, and wartime command 356 360 483.

  • Advocates systematic medical training and medical support within mission squads 205.
  • Negotiates for supplies and territorial concessions at the Five Kage Summit 360.
  • Considers incorporating the Land of Demons and Land of Swamps into the Land of Rain 470.
  • Coordinates allied deployments and reinforcement orders during the Fourth Shinobi World War 484 487.

Relationships

  • Uya — Prospective apprentice, recipient of her Monstrous Strength scroll, and later rescuer and political ally. He teaches her Soru, guides her development, and entrusts Amegakure’s leadership to her 43 48 111 116 357.
  • Kushina Uzumaki — A close companion who regards Tsunade as a big sister. Kushina encourages her to stay in Amegakure and later becomes her occasional gambling partner 301 302 380.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Her teacher. Their relationship deteriorates over his treatment of Uya and the Senju Clan; she later represents Amegakure independently of him 299 300 359.
  • Hashirama Senju — Her grandfather. His founding of Konoha is a major reason she initially refuses to let the village face destruction unaided 111 300.
  • Tobirama Senju — Her “second grandfather,” whose governing ability she invokes when praising Uya’s administration 301.
  • Nawaki — Her deceased younger brother. Remembering him strengthens her resolve to reduce ninja casualties through medical reform 205.
  • Jiraiya and Orochimaru — Fellow Sannin and wartime comrades. Tsunade attempts to protect Jiraiya against Hanzo and later declines to interfere with Orochimaru’s planned attack on Konoha 160 161 464.
  • Shizune — Her longtime trainee and administrative assistant. Tsunade brings her to Amegakure after returning to Konoha to pay respects following Hatake Sakumo’s death 356.
  • Chiyo — Medical rival and enemy. Their rivalry begins through poisons and antidotes before their first face-to-face confrontation 117.
  • Karin — Medical student and subject of collaborative research into an unusual healing constitution 426 427 429.
  • Danzo — A political figure she deeply distrusts. She rejects his treatment of recruits as emotionless tools and agrees that he deserved to die after Uya confirms killing him 43 356.

Notable Quotes

“If no one else will do anything, then I’m definitely getting involved!” 43

“Adding medical-nin to mission squads could drastically reduce ninja casualties. Does something like this really need this much discussion?!” 205

“No need. We can’t have Uya step in every time a problem arises. Besides, all Five Kage are here this time!” 487

Trivia

  • Tsunade becomes Amekage, not Hokage, in this storyline. After Hiruzen’s death, Kakashi succeeds as the Fifth Hokage 380 469.
  • Her gambling losses appear almost inevitable unless something terrible is approaching. Uya investigates with Shockwave Sensing but finds no identifiable force causing the phenomenon 380.
  • Konoha’s leadership once regards her bond with Uya as a means of maintaining his connection to the village; she eventually leaves Konoha to join him in Amegakure 49 129 309.
