History

Early Career and Interest in Uya

Orochimaru trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi, who regarded him as a genius appearing only once in a decade. His talent was considered greater than that of Jiraiya and Tsunade. Danzo supported him as a possible Hokage successor, although Orochimaru showed no outward reaction when the subject arose 31 158 356.

He noticed Uya’s potential during the Ninja Academy assessment, pointing out that Uya had reached the main arena before Minato Namikaze. After Uya subsequently killed Uchiha Kan, Orochimaru concluded that the Uchiha Clan, Danzo, and Hiruzen had all underestimated him 28 49.

Second Shinobi World War

Orochimaru encountered Uya while returning toward Konoha’s camp in disguise. Outside a small town, he revealed himself, questioned Uya about his Kusanagi Sword, and challenged him to test his abilities. Uya destroyed both Hidden Shadow Snake Hands and Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes, but Orochimaru survived the attacks and emerged unharmed from the muddy ground 129 130 131.

On the battlefield, Orochimaru recognized that Uya’s Quake Release was especially suited to mass combat. He later accompanied Uya, Jiraiya, Tsunade, and an elite unit on a mission to hold off Hanzo of the Salamander. His snakes scouted their route through the Land of Rain 141 159.

Hanzo injured him despite his Shedding Technique and broke through his Rashomon defenses. After Hanzo withdrew, Orochimaru credited Uya with repeatedly blocking the enemy’s attacks. Almost all the elite Konoha and Rain ninja on the battlefield had died 161 163 165.

Orochimaru then detected survivors nearby and prepared to kill them, but Uya stopped him after recognizing Yahiko and Konan. His subsequent scrutiny of Nagato preceded the emergence of the Rinnegan. Recognizing the legendary eyes, Orochimaru immediately attacked; Nagato’s Shinra Tensei swept his attack away 165 166.

Research Exchanges with Uya

After the war, Uya visited Orochimaru’s underground laboratory and returned the third stage of the Lightning Release Body Tempering Secret Technique. Orochimaru valued its use of external natural forces for his human modification experiments. He also explained that he had previously supplied the second stage to oppose someone attempting to restrict Uya’s access to resources 232.

Orochimaru disclosed his research into the relationship between body and soul, hoping Uya could obtain experimental materials for him. Uya responded by placing his Kusanagi Sword across Orochimaru’s shoulder, demonstrating that their strength was too unequal for Orochimaru to dictate a partnership 233.

Uya later supplied him with a pair of Mangekyō Sharingan. Orochimaru, who valued the eyes more highly than his senjutsu training method, recorded that method for Uya in return 246.

During the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru commanded Konoha’s forces against Iwagakure while continuing his laboratory work. His soul research became an important resource for Uya, particularly after Uya entrusted two jinchūriki to him as experimental subjects 321 323 328 330.

Defection and the Land of Water

Hiruzen refused to consider Orochimaru for the Fourth Hokage position because he recognized his ambition. After Hiruzen discovered his research into Living Corpse Reincarnation, Orochimaru defected and became an S-rank missing-nin 372 373.

He later spent three years in the Land of Water. Near Kirigakure, he explained to Uya and Haku how struggles for political power had led to the suppression of kekkei genkai clans. He also said that he was investigating the Akatsuki and the Rinnegan 386 389.

Orochimaru had been watching Kimimaro and had also collected information on Mei Terumi’s two kekkei genkai. Although obtaining Kimimaro was an objective of his trip, he abandoned that plan when Uya decided to take the boy in 387 389.

Otogakure and Karin’s Physique

Orochimaru established Otogakure as a base for experiments, shinobi training, and the selection of suitable vessels for Living Corpse Reincarnation. Almost all its ninja were brainwashed into fanatical loyalty to him 427.

Uya approached him to investigate Karin’s unusual healing constitution after Tsunade and Kushina failed to develop its properties further. Orochimaru requested direct access to Karin, but Uya allowed only blood and chakra samples. Orochimaru later sent his findings to Amegakure without requiring another visit 427 431.

After sensing Uya’s increased power, Orochimaru concluded that he might possess the Sage of Six Paths’ power and have participated in the battle that destroyed the moon. He immediately prioritized Uya’s research request over his other experiments 428.

Chunin Exams and the Konoha Crush

Before acting against Konoha, Orochimaru visited Amegakure to inform Uya of his plan. He understood that proceeding without warning could endanger people Uya cared about. Uya permitted him to continue 431.

Orochimaru infiltrated the Chunin Exams disguised as a Grass Ninja. Seeking a suitable body and the stronger Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, he targeted Sasuke after finding Itachi difficult to defeat. In the Forest of Death, he overwhelmed Sasuke and Naruto, suppressed Naruto’s Nine-Tails power, and attacked Sakura 443 447 448.

Kimimaro, Haku, and Karin intervened. Their combined sensory, sealing, ice, and bone techniques forced Orochimaru to expend considerable chakra, but failed to finish him. Uya ended the encounter by punching him into the distance 448 449 450.

After recovering, Orochimaru killed the Kazekage and assumed his identity. He took Hiruzen hostage during the exams, while Sound and Sand ninja attacked Konoha and giant snakes entered the village 464 465.

Rather than summoning the First and Second Hokage through Impure World Reincarnation, Orochimaru fought Hiruzen directly. His Mangekyō Sharingan allowed him to overwhelm his aging teacher, but the Four Violet Flames Formation also prevented his escape when Hiruzen used the Reaper Death Seal 467.

Uya’s destruction of the summoned Shinigami shattered part of Orochimaru’s soul. Orochimaru survived by immediately abandoning the damaged portion and severing the connection. The injury left him severely weakened and temporarily unable to use Living Corpse Reincarnation 468 469.

Encounter with Yuxi

Years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru maintained a hidden experimental base in a valley. With Uya absent from the Shinobi World for ten years, he believed that practically no one remained who could threaten him 503.

When Uya and Kushina’s daughter Yuxi discovered the base, Orochimaru intended to capture and dissect her. She attacked first, shattering space with a tremor-powered punch and driving him deep into the rock face. He survived and recognized her parentage from the familiar power, but could not crawl out for a long while 503 504.

Appearance

• Snake-like eyes: His pupils and gaze repeatedly evoke a serpent; he can replace their ordinary appearance with Mangekyō Sharingan 161 323 443.
• Long, dexterous tongue: He uses it to catch objects and habitually extends it when intrigued 232 449.
• Unsettling expression and presence: His smiles are consistently sinister. Haku instinctively regards him as dangerously inhuman 232 386.
• Convincing disguises: He passes as other shinobi and later as the Kazekage; even Uya does not immediately recognize his small-town disguise 129 447 464.

Personality

Orochimaru is driven by curiosity about hidden powers, unusual bodies, and immortality. He treats wartime prisoners and gifted shinobi as experimental resources, regarding Kimimaro, Haku, and Karin as research subjects rather than people. His interest in Yuxi likewise overrides his initial suspicion that something is wrong 232 449 503.

His scientific work receives a seriousness absent from his usual sinister manner. He explains experimental findings carefully and considers uncovering the world’s unknowns deeply rewarding. Research into immortality remains more important to him than even a world war 323 428.

He is also pragmatic about superior force. Once Uya becomes overwhelmingly stronger, Orochimaru shares findings he would prefer to keep, yields his claim to Kimimaro, and seeks permission before acting against Konoha. His caution does not prevent opportunism: during the Forest of Death battle, he still tries to obtain tissue and chakra from Uya’s protégés 323 389 431 449.
