Personality

Lee is intensely disciplined and measures progress through demanding physical challenges. He attempts two thousand weighted push-ups to move closer to Hongshi's strength, with laps around Konoha as a penalty for failure. His determination can become dangerous stubbornness: during his first spar with Hongshi, he continues attacking after breaking a foot and his right hand 21 65.

He treats wholehearted effort as respect for an opponent. Before facing Yuhan, he promises not to hold back; against Kimimaro, he insists that he is at full strength “at every moment.” Guy calls him a “genius of hard work,” while Sakura praises his tenacious will despite disliking his eyebrows 27 66 105.

Lee openly admires Guy and immediately defends him from Sakura's ridicule. He is also impulsive in romance, asking both Sakura and Yuhan to date him shortly after meeting them. Later, he shows greater tactical restraint by withdrawing after striking Mizuki's forces, explicitly crediting Hongshi's advice 21 197.

Chunin Exams

Lee first appears with Neji and Tenten at the Ninja Academy, concealing his strength while disguised exam proctors humiliate the team. After Hongshi intervenes, Lee challenges him and repeatedly injures himself against his hardened body. Yuhan heals him, and Hongshi applies the seal that subsequently helps Lee overwhelm Sasuke before Guy stops the fight 21.

In his first Chunin Exams, Lee faces Yuhan. He escapes Water Prison, removes his weights, and uses Reverse Lotus, but Yuhan's five water men ultimately leave him unable to continue 22 27.

Land of Snow

Lee joins the film crew's escort as a Team 3 genin and volunteers to carry Hongshi as training. When Fubuki Kakuyoku captures Hongshi, Lee pursues her and breaks her armor barrier, but Zabuza interrupts the fight and escapes after revealing the capture of Koyuki and the defeat of Yuhan and Neji 31 33.

During the rebel assault, Lee uses experimental chakra enhancement and Chakra Armor against Nadare Rōga. Hongshi's hardening seal saves him from Nadare's final attack, allowing Lee to finish the fight and take his opponent's clothes after his own have burned away 36 37 39.

Shukaku and the Flesh-Fusion Experiment

Lee joins the coordinated attempt to wake Gaara and suppress Shukaku, attacking alongside Naruto, Tenten, Shikamaru, and Sakura 51 52.

Afterward, Hongshi modifies Lee with chakra-devouring flesh. Guy mistakes the transformed Lee for a monster that has eaten his pupil, forcing Lee into a seventh-gate battle with his own teacher. Hongshi treats his injuries, and Guy begins a new period of special training. Lee subsequently helps Guy strike Kisame and assists after Itachi incapacitates Kakashi 65 66 67.

Pursuit of Orochimaru

During the pursuit to recover Sasuke, Lee and Guy engage Kimimaro before Jūgo separates Guy from the fight. Lee defeats Kimimaro using absorbed chakra, Lightning Release, and seventh-gate Drunken Fist; the hardening seal protects him from the final counterattack. Ainz then shields Lee from Jūgo before departing with Jūgo and a revived Kimimaro 104 105 106.

At Venomous Snake Valley, Lee fights deep inside the Sound Ninja formation, uses Morning Peacock to support Sakura and Naruto, and receives a one-tailed chakra cloak from the Nine-Tails 113.

Katabami Gold Mine and the Land of Rivers

Tsunade assigns Lee and Hongshi a B-rank rescue mission, with Sakura and Naruto added to the team. Lee helps evacuate the miners before joining Sakura against Raiga. His incomplete Daytime Tiger is interrupted by Kairyū, who cancels both sides' attacks 119 123 124.

Lee later befriends Tōhachi through sparring, supervises the sea-stone miners, and learns Thunderstorm Unrivaled after absorbing Raiga's lightning. He then joins Raiga and Kairyū's force heading toward Windblown Sand Valley 129 132 133 134.

Beastmen Conflict

Against Mizuki's forces, Lee adopts Hongshi's commander-striking tactics, breaks Gelel Stone defenses with Daytime Tiger, and coordinates attacks with Choji. After striking down Temujin, he absorbs natural energy from dead beastmen and develops bull horns. Kyōai protects Lee and the wounded Choji until Sōsuke brings them aboard Kyōka Suigetsu 197 199.
