Background

Sasuke survived the Uchiha Clan’s destruction at the hands of his older brother, Itachi. His memories include finding his parents in pools of blood and seeing Itachi carrying a bloodied katana. Killing Itachi and restoring the clan become his stated ambitions 4 67 70.

Hongshi was one of Sasuke’s few childhood playmates. They remained on good terms when assigned to Team 7, with Sasuke excluding Hongshi from his initial insults toward Naruto 4 24.

Appearance

  • Sharingan: His eyes change upon awakening the Uchiha ocular ability; the three-tomoe form is explicitly described during his match against Sakura 17 46.
  • Cursed Seal of Heaven: Located on the back of his neck, with flame-shaped markings that spread across his body when activated 24 70.
  • Stage One changes: During his confrontation with Naruto, his left eye turns black and his chakra becomes cold and sinister 108.
  • Stage Two changes: His body turns black, his hair grows longer and becomes white, and fleshy wings emerge from his back 108 109.

Personality

Sasuke is proud, competitive, and blunt. He calls Naruto “dead last,” initially attempts Kakashi’s test without considering his teammates, and decisively rejects Ino’s invitation to eat together. Strong opponents excite him: he welcomes the prospect of another dangerous enemy in the Land of Waves and describes his trembling before Zabuza’s clones as excitement rather than fear 4 6 12 15 27.

His early actions reveal attachments beneath his aloof manner. He shields Naruto from Haku’s needles without consciously deciding to do so, grieves Hongshi’s apparent death, and rushes after Naruto when he realizes Itachi is pursuing him 17 24 69.

Repeated reminders of his inferiority to Itachi, coupled with Naruto and Sakura’s rapid improvement, turn his competitiveness into jealousy. The cursed seal also erodes his body and will. Although he briefly considers Kakashi’s advice about valuing his companions, he ultimately chooses Orochimaru’s promise of power 72 96 97.

After gaining Stage Two, Sasuke openly treats his bonds as obstacles to revenge. He still acknowledges Naruto, Sakura, and Hongshi as his best friends, but uses that attachment as a reason to consider them worth killing 108 109.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Sasuke’s inherited ocular ability improves his perception and ability to anticipate attacks 17 46.

  • Tracks Haku’s movements after awakening, allowing him to dodge senbon and launch a counterattack 17.
  • Locates Sakura through mist and predicts her movements during their examination match 46.
  • Provides natural resistance to Sakura’s cherry-blossom genjutsu 96.
  • Cannot distinguish Naruto’s original body from shadow clones with identical chakra 96 108.
  • Prediction does not guarantee evasion: against Naruto’s three-tailed form, he can read the attacks but cannot move quickly enough to avoid them 109.

Fire Release

Fire Release is a central part of Sasuke’s arsenal, ranging from large frontal attacks to scattered projectiles and concealed weapons.

Technique Demonstrated Use
Great Fireball Technique Produces a large fireball during Kakashi’s bell test; later expands enough to engulf the hospital rooftop 5 96.
Phoenix Flower Jutsu Launches multiple smaller fireballs to attack Haku, restrict Ino’s escape routes, and intercept Naruto’s wind projectiles 17 27 109.
Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson Conceals shuriken within fireballs during his match against Sakura 45.
Dragon Fire Technique Commits his remaining chakra to the Forest of Death combination attack; later uses the technique against Ino and Sakura 23 27 46.
Fire Dragon Bullet Uses a Stage Two-enhanced version containing black flames that heats the surrounding lake water to boiling 109.
  • Combines his fire with Naruto’s Wind Release against Orochimaru and Itachi 23 71.
  • Uses cursed-seal energy to strengthen his flames enough to resist Itachi’s superior Great Fireball 71.

Lightning Release

Sasuke can channel Lightning Release through weapons and concentrate it into piercing or restraining attacks.

  • Chidori: Taught by Kakashi, who intended it to protect Sasuke’s companions. It penetrates Sakura’s wooden fist but fails to destroy it, leaving Sasuke to collide with the obstacle 46 97.
  • Right-handed Chidori: Uses his right hand to strike Gaara while his left arm remains broken; the lightning’s paralysis prevents Gaara from continuing his ninjutsu 52.
  • Black Lightning: In Stage Two, divides lightning into five streams that bind Naruto’s limbs and neck, inflicting pain and paralysis 109.
  • Weapon infusion: Powers the Five Release Blade and later attacks with Lightning Release-infused Kusanagi Swords 19 23 212.

Chidori’s power does not overcome a large skill gap by itself. Itachi neutralizes Sasuke’s charge simply by catching and redirecting his wrist 71.

Cursed Seal of Heaven

Orochimaru’s seal grants access to power associated with forced Sage Transformation, but threatens the user’s self-control and survival 24 97.

  • Stage One: Spreading markings increase Sasuke’s chakra and physical strength. Against Naruto, he favors a primitive activation method that grants a greater boost than Hongshi’s safer control method 108.
  • Stage Two: Changes his body and chakra, strengthens his techniques, and grants wings capable of keeping him airborne 108 109.
  • Control training: Hongshi’s earlier instruction helps Sasuke handle Stage Two after emerging from the coffin 108.
  • Mental cost: The seal contributes to his worsening resentment and increasingly frenzied behavior 96 109.
  • Time limit: Adapting to Stage Two does not make prolonged use safe. Orochimaru ends Sasuke’s transformation because maintaining it could kill him 97 109.

Taijutsu, Shurikenjutsu & Chakra Control

  • Sharingan-assisted close combat: Destroys Naruto’s shadow clones through predicted movements, shuriken, punches, and kicks 108.
  • Shadow of the Dancing Leaf and Lion Combo: Imitates Rock Lee’s movements to launch Naruto upward, strike him repeatedly, and finish with a downward spinning kick 109.
  • Shadow Windmill attack: Hides a second giant shuriken behind the first during Team 7’s coordinated assault on Orochimaru 23.
  • Chakra-powered movement: Escapes Haku’s surrounding ice needles by concentrating chakra beneath his feet 15.
  • Water and wall movement: Walks on water and adheres to the arena wall during combat 9 46.
  • Substitution Technique: Avoids the wall collision Ino attempts immediately before releasing her possession of him 27.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Five Release Blade: Hieimon’s chakra-powered weapon. Sasuke first tests its lightning-nature prototype, requests one of his own, and later uses the supplied blade to cut through Orochimaru’s Earth Clone 19 23.
  • Kusanagi Swords: Used with Lightning Release infusion to attack Kikin’s shadow clone at Mount Shumisen 212.
  • Shuriken and giant shuriken: Used for direct attacks, concealed projectiles, and coordinated tactics with Naruto 15 23 45.
  • Smoke bombs: Uses one to conceal the opening of the Shadow Windmill attack against Orochimaru 23.
  • Mind Awakening Pill: Takes the pill to enter suspended animation before the procedure that enables his Stage Two transformation 97.

Relationships

  • Itachi Uchiha — Older brother and principal target of revenge. Itachi’s destruction of their clan drives Sasuke’s ambitions; his later use of Tsukuyomi deepens Sasuke’s sense of powerlessness 4 67 70 72.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Teammate, rival, and acknowledged best friend. Sasuke initially risks his life to protect Naruto, but later attempts to kill him at the Valley of the End. Naruto survives and vows to bring him home 17 109 110.
  • Sakura Haruno — Teammate who cares for him during his hospitalization. Her victory over him and subsequent growth intensify his jealousy; she also prevents his rooftop clash with Naruto from ending in a direct collision 46 95 96.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Team leader and Chidori teacher. Gives Sasuke special training, urges him to abandon revenge, and joins the pursuit after his departure 45 97 99.
  • Hongshi — Childhood friend, former teammate, and later training guide. Sasuke mourns his apparent death, benefits from his cursed-seal instruction, then repudiates his teaching and declares an intention to kill him 24 108.
  • Orochimaru — Source of the cursed seal and Sasuke’s chosen route to greater power. Offers him the strength to defeat Itachi while privately coveting his body 23 96 97.
  • Ino Yamanaka — Former admirer and examination opponent. She helps care for Sasuke alongside Sakura, then quietly gives up pursuing him 27 95.
  • Hieimon — Weapon inventor who supplies Sasuke’s Five Release Blade after Sasuke asks him to make one 19 23.
  • Tsunade — Heals the condition left by Itachi’s Tsukuyomi, allowing Sasuke to wake from his hospitalization 72 95 96.

Chunin Exams and Konoha Crush

  • Loses decisively to Rock Lee before the examinations despite having grown stronger 21.
  • Helps Naruto and Sakura fight Orochimaru in the Forest of Death. Their coordinated fire-and-wind attack fails, and Orochimaru marks all three with the Cursed Seal of Heaven 23.

  • Is carried back toward Konoha by Guy and eventually healed by Tsunade 74 95.

Defection and the Valley of the End

  • Challenges Naruto on the hospital rooftop after becoming consumed by jealousy. Sakura blocks their Chidori and Fire Rasengan with Wood Release 96.

  • Undergoes the procedure for Stage Two and emerges from the coffin at the Valley of the End 97 108.
  • Rejects Naruto’s appeal to return and fights him with the Sharingan and cursed seal. Sasuke pierces Naruto’s chest with Chidori, but their escalating battle has no decisive conclusion 108 109.

Later Activity

  • Remains part of Orochimaru’s plans; Orochimaru explicitly intends to continue cultivating Sasuke’s strength 176.
  • Reappears at Mount Shumisen and attacks Kikin’s shadow clone with Lightning Release-infused Kusanagi Swords 212.
