Personality
Ritsuka remains willing to make decisions despite being frightened and physically outmatched. In Singularity F, she accepts responsibility as the group’s Master despite having no personal combat abilities, then introduces herself to Mayuri even after the Servant’s presence nearly makes her knees buckle 69 76 77.
Her compassion extends to strangers and apparent enemies. She helps elderly refugees cross the desert and prepares to intervene against the Holy Selection. Rather than treating Quetzalcoatl’s membership in the Three Goddess Alliance as proof of murderous intent, she notices that the goddess deliberately avoids killing her opponents and seeks cooperation 152 246 253.
Ritsuka is also highly sociable, sometimes to an overwhelming degree: her enthusiastic attempts to befriend Kotori drive the shy Servant behind Tomoe Gozen. Her confidence can become overconfidence, but she acknowledges mistakes after the failed jungle mission and accepts Mash’s reassurance before returning to work 244 248 250.
Abilities & Skills
Battlefield Command
Ritsuka directs allied Servants rather than fighting enemies personally 69 126.
- Assigns frontline and support positions and orders targeted distractions during the battle against Belphegor’s phantom 126.
- Recognizes when additional firepower cannot overcome an enemy’s recovery and orders a retreat from the nightmare interlayer 123.
- Selects Metatron, Mash, and Arcueid as her side’s three representatives in the Dream Holy Grail War 135.
- Orders Merlin to evacuate the party after Jaguar Man overwhelms Mash and Ana 244.
Observation and Negotiation
Ritsuka uses an opponent’s behavior to identify motives and alternatives to direct combat 126 246.
- Belphegor’s phantom: Notices that its attacks avoid Astolfo and Atalanta, correctly connecting this selective hostility to Mukuro’s surviving feelings and memories 126.
- Diplomatic judgment: Accepts a temporary alliance with the People of the Mountain without prematurely declaring either the Holy City or the Pharaoh responsible for the Singularity 150.
- Quetzalcoatl: Recognizes the goddess’s nonlethal restraint and confronts her directly to seek partnership rather than submission 246 252 253.
Command Spells
Ritsuka bears Command Spells on her right hand and can use them to support allied Servants 66 260.
| Documented Event | Effect |
|---|---|
| Receives Mukuro’s three Command Spells from Merlin | Merlin transfers the spells taken from Mukuro’s original Master. Ritsuka senses their connection and locates Mukuro in the dream’s deepest layer 124. |
| Expends one Command Spell on Ishtar | Replenishes Ishtar’s depleted magical energy and dispels most of her fatigue, enabling another Noble Phantasm activation 260. |
Limitations
- Has no talent for magecraft and initially possesses no personal combat abilities 66 69.
- Has ordinary human endurance: running for more than ten minutes during an escape in Singularity F leaves her exhausted and trembling 72.
- Depends on allies for protection against Servants and other supernatural threats, especially Mash’s shield 67 76 252.
- Cannot resist Mukuro’s immobilization and memory-sealing abilities; her memories of Mukuro and the dream world are sealed before she is returned to Chaldea 146.
Equipment
- Chaldea uniform — Her usual field outfit includes a white jacket and tall white boots 66.
- Wrist-mounted communications device — Displays projections of Olga Marie and Dr. Roman for remote briefings and consultation 161.
Background / History
Recruitment and Singularity F
Ritsuka enters Chaldea as its forty-eighth reserve Master, an ordinary recruit without magecraft talent who becomes the last surviving Master through a twist of fate. She arrives in Singularity F alongside Mash, drawing the attention of Mayuri, who is contracted to oppose Chaldea 66.
The pair find Fuyuki engulfed in magical fire. Dr. Roman detects a nearby presence approaching Beast-class and directs them to flee; they collect Olga Marie while escaping. Unbeknownst to them, the source is Mayuri, who follows while initially failing to realize that she herself is frightening them 67 68.
With Cú Chulainn’s assistance, Ritsuka accepts that repairing the Singularity requires reaching Mount Enzou and defeating the Holy Grail’s guardian. The party also answers Heracles’s request to help his mortally wounded Master, Illya, and accompanies him to Einzbern Castle 69 72 73.
At Mount Enzou, Shirou Emiya attacks their approach but allows them through after seeing Illya. Ritsuka then meets Mayuri and asks her name despite Mash’s concern about the taboo surrounding Heroic Spirits’ True Names. When Goetia appears, Chaldea withdraws while Mayuri prepares to fight him 76 77.
Mayuri’s Arrival at Chaldea
Ritsuka is startled to encounter the former Grail guardian in Chaldea’s corridors, but awkwardly welcomes her. During the encounter, Fou immediately takes an interest in Mayuri and climbs onto her head. Olga Marie subsequently assigns Mayuri to accompany Ritsuka and Mash on the Sixth Singularity mission 83.
Romania and the Dream World
Ritsuka, Mash, and Merlin arrive outside Trifas and investigate a dream concealing the aftermath of the Great Holy Grail War. After hearing Atalanta’s account, they descend into a nightmare interlayer and assist Metatron against Belphegor’s phantom. Ritsuka orders a retreat when the nightmare’s automatic restoration renders their attacks ineffective 120 121 122 123.
Merlin transfers three Command Spells connected to Mukuro Hoshimiya to Ritsuka, allowing the group to locate her in the deepest dream layer. During their next assault, Ritsuka observes that Belphegor’s phantom avoids Astolfo and Atalanta and chooses them as companions for an attempt to persuade Mukuro 124 126.
The effort becomes a dispute over Earth’s future. Ritsuka supports restoring the original planet, opposing Amakusa Shirou’s proposal to make the peaceful dream world real. She keeps Astolfo neutral so that either side will retain a messenger acceptable to Mukuro 129 133.
Mukuro settles the dispute through a three-on-three Dream Holy Grail War on a dream version of the Moon. Ritsuka chooses Metatron, Mash, and Arcueid to face Atalanta, Karna, and Heracles. Later, Mukuro immobilizes the Chaldea group, seals their memories of herself and the dream world, and sends Ritsuka, Mash, and Merlin back to Chaldea 135 146.
Sixth Singularity
Ritsuka transfers with Mash and Mayuri to the vicinity of Jerusalem in AD 1273, finding a desert in place of the expected landscape. Chaldea has classified the Singularity’s Human Order Foundation rank as EX because of its extreme distortions and divine-level presences 147.
She accepts Cursed Arm Hassan’s temporary alliance and agrees to represent the People of the Mountain during talks with the Pharaoh while concealing the party’s Chaldea affiliation unless necessary. After Ozymandias denies causing the Singularity, she redirects the investigation toward the Lion King and Holy City 150 152.
Joining refugees bound for the Holy Selection, Ritsuka helps the elderly and investigates a suspicious armored traveler calling himself Lucius. At the Holy City, she realizes that the unchosen refugees are about to be attacked and urgently calls Mash into action. The party later participates in discussions about supplying and sheltering more than eight hundred refugees at the mountain camp 152 153 160.
At the Atlas Institute, Ritsuka and her companions meet Sherlock Holmes. Trismegistus Hermes identifies Caster and Marisbury Animusphere as the true victors of the 2004 Fuyuki Holy Grail War, contradicting the account Ritsuka remembers receiving from Chaldea. Holmes also identifies Mash’s Heroic Spirit as Galahad and explains the Lion King’s transformation under Rhongomyniad 162 163.
Seventh Singularity: Uruk
An anomaly during Spiritron Transfer separates Mayuri from the party. Ritsuka mourns her disappearance but resumes gathering information in Uruk. Gilgamesh then sends her group to retrieve Amakusa Shirou from the southern jungle 243.
Jaguar Man overwhelms the rescue party, forcing Ritsuka to order an evacuation. She apologizes for underestimating the danger; Gilgamesh reveals that the assignment was intended to demonstrate the Singularity’s threats 244.
Ritsuka subsequently seeks negotiations with Quetzalcoatl. In Eridu, after the goddess defeats four allied Servants without killing them, Ritsuka asks Kotori to send her forward—and is promptly thrown toward Quetzalcoatl. She directly requests cooperation rather than submission. The expedition ultimately rescues Ishtar and Amakusa, brings the Axe of Marduk to Uruk, and secures Quetzalcoatl’s agreement to stop attacking the city 252 253 254 255.
Ritsuka later leads the expedition against Gorgon and uses a Command Spell to restore Ishtar’s magical energy. After Merlin disappears, she prioritizes delivering his warning that Tiamat has awakened as Beast II. While returning to Uruk, Chaldea reports that Tiamat is expected to reach the city within forty-eight hours 256 260 262 265.
