Background / History
Previous Life and Academy Years
In his previous life, Tang San belonged to the Tang Sect. Determined to prove himself, he violated its rules by secretly entering the inner sect and studying its restricted techniques. He retained these arts after reincarnation and concealed the truth of his previous life even from Xiao Wu 145 150.
During Shrek Academy’s entrance examination, he fought Zhao Wuji using movement, grappling, hand-training, and hidden-weapon techniques. His unpredictable attacks affected Zhao Wuji despite the latter’s Soul Saint cultivation 113.
Later, at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, he defeated Tai Long and then Tai Nuo. Tai Tan’s subsequent intervention forced him to reveal his second Martial Soul, the Clear Sky Hammer 123.
Founding the Tang Sect
Tang San secured an order for five hundred hidden-weapon sets from Ning Fengzhi, worth five million Gold Soul Coins. The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect manufactured the components, while Tang San performed final assembly 123.
He subsequently established the Tang Sect outside Heaven Dou City. The Strength Clan and Speed Clan joined directly, with Tai Tan and Bai He becoming elders. The Breaking Clan and Defense Clan declined to join 129.
His commercial relationship with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect did not become an unrestricted exchange of techniques. When Ning Fengzhi required one of Tang San’s cultivation methods in return for Heart Separation Control, Tang San refused, straining his relationship with Ning Rongrong 131 137.
Soul Master Tournament
Tang San competed for Heaven Dou Team One. Against Blue Tyrant Academy, his Blue Silver Cage trapped the opposing team before Yu Tianheng’s lightning attack defeated and severely injured them. When accused of attempted murder, Tang San answered, “May I ask, are they dead?” 135 137.
Although still a Soul Ancestor, his combat strength was widely considered comparable to a Soul King’s. He nevertheless lost to Yang Ping’an: his strongest fifty-four-strike Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer attack was overcome by the Breaking Clan’s Ring Fusion 147 148.
During the journey after the tournament, Tang San repeatedly dreamed of studying the Tang Sect’s secret arts in his previous life. Without his knowledge, Yang Podi observed and guided these dreams, recording his techniques and hidden-weapon knowledge over seven days 150.
Lost Opportunities and the Tang Sect’s Decline
After Tang San reached level 50, Tang Hao took him to the Blue Silver Forest to awaken his inherited Blue Silver Emperor bloodline. The Blue Silver King and the forest’s older Blue Silver Grass were missing, making the awakening impossible. Tang San continued cultivating ordinary Blue Silver Grass along Yu Xiaogang’s control-and-poison route 191.
Meanwhile, Tang Sect manuals and hidden-weapon blueprints appeared on the black market. Major factions began producing their own weapons, eliminating the Tang Sect’s commercial advantage. Tang San recognized that the circulated cultivation manuals were incomplete, but concealed this to avoid revealing that he possessed complete versions 191.
His Slaughter City training also failed to deliver its intended reward. The depleted population made arena matches almost impossible to arrange, and he left without Divine Slaughter’s Domain. He later reunited with Xiao Wu and obtained his sixth Soul Ring, but by then had largely abandoned the struggling Tang Sect 198.
Heavenly Pursuit Academy and Sea God Island
At nineteen, Tang San secretly explored Heavenly Pursuit Academy, examining its defensive weapons, training facilities, medicinal baths, and cultivation environments. He entered Mount Aermo’s summit, attracted by its concentrated life energy, but was discovered, injured, and captured. Tang Hao and Tang Xiao intervened on his behalf 227 228.
He later travelled to Sea God Island with six companions. Bo Saixi recognized his connection to Tang Chen, his great-grandfather, and he undertook the Red Level Seven Trials 248 249 340.
News of Tang Hao’s death and the Clear Sky Sect’s destruction intensified his hatred of Yang Podi and the Spirit Hall Empire. He trained increasingly recklessly, extending his endurance in Tidal Body Tempering from eight hours to ten 314 320.
After completing all seven trials, Tang San became a candidate for the next Great Enshrined. He instead regarded Sea God Island as a cage and sought to leave for revenge. Bo Saixi warned that he could not withstand the continent’s enemies and refused to relax the island’s rules for him 340 341 342.
Descent into Darkness
After leaving Sea God Island, Tang San lost control upon hearing of further deaths connected to Bibi Dong. His Blue Silver Grass killed several Soul Beasts and absorbed their life force. Discovering that this increased his Soul Power, he deliberately repeated the process despite knowing its dangers 346.
Continued devouring contaminated his bloodline and soul with the victims’ despair and agony. His Martial Soul became Dark Blue Silver Grass, while his behaviour grew more extreme and bloodthirsty. He then rapidly increased his strength by obtaining rings for both Martial Souls, aided by Xiao Wu’s knowledge of the Star Dou Great Forest and Di Tian’s intervention 347 348.
Tang San returned to Heavenly Pursuit Academy to demand answers about Tai Tan and Bai He’s disappearance. The confrontation became a battle in which he held four opponents to a standstill with his Clear Sky Hammer. Di Tian later brought the severely injured Tang San back, and Bi Ji treated him; he healed further by devouring Soul Beast energy 354 355 356 367.
Spirit City and Death
Tang San sought to exploit war between humanity and the Soul Beast Clan, intending to absorb the resulting corpses and energy while pursuing revenge. At Spirit City, his successive ambushes killed two Spirit Hall Empire Titled Douluo before they could self-destruct 384 385.
He continued absorbing energy and attained godhood, but proved far weaker than Yang Podi in their divine battle. Yang Podi cut through his Dark Blue Silver Grass, sent the Clear Sky Hammer flying, and grievously wounded him. Tang San responded by detonating all ten hammer rings 388 389 395 399.
Left critically injured in a crater, Tang San was beheaded by Qian Renxue. Angel Divine Light dissolved his body, divine soul, and divine bones. His divine-artifact Clear Sky Hammer survived, but the phantom of Tang San within it was also destroyed 400.
Appearance
- Before his fall: Did not undergo the appearance-changing Blue Silver Emperor Second Awakening 198.
- After devouring Soul Beasts: Developed a deathly pale complexion and pitch-black eyes lacking their former lustre 347.
- Evil God Pearl mark: A black, pearl-like or tiger-like shadow appeared between his brows after the pearl merged into his ninth Soul Ring 348.
- Divine state: Shed golden blood when wounded by Yang Podi 399.
Personality
Tang San’s defining trait is an intense refusal to admit defeat. His competitiveness drives disciplined training, persistence under pressure, and an ability to surpass his apparent limits. The same trait led him to steal restricted techniques in his previous life and increasingly pursue strength without regard for consequences 145 147.
He is deeply protective of Xiao Wu and originally treats Yu Xiaogang with the respect he would show a father. His loyalty is strongly partial: he rejects exchanging his own secret methods while seeking other factions’ knowledge, and later insists that the Breaking and Defense Clans owe continuing service to the Clear Sky Sect because of their former subordinate status 133 137 341 350.
Bereavement and devouring progressively turn his determination into obsession. He dismisses warnings from Bo Saixi and Yu Xiaogang, convinced that Mysterious Heaven Skill and his spiritual strength can prevent corruption. Eventually, Xiao Wu is one of the few people capable of drawing ordinary human emotion from him; he views other lives with beastlike indifference 271 350 367.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass and Dark Blue Silver Grass
His first Martial Soul follows a control-and-poison cultivation route rather than fully awakening as the Blue Silver Emperor 191 226.
- Entanglement: Sends Blue Silver Grass toward an opponent to restrain them 148.
- Blue Silver Cage: Fourth Soul Skill; confines multiple targets simultaneously. His tournament-era version lacked the durability and control duration of its original-story counterpart 137.
- Potent poison: The sixth ring from a Jade Phosphorous Serpent makes its poison difficult even for Soul Emperors to withstand 198.
- Blue Silver Avatar: Seventh Soul Skill; multiplies poison potency and improves toughness and control 271.
- Illusory transformation: The Illusory Sea Serpent’s ring allows the grass to become partly tangible and partly illusory 340.
- Dark mutation: Repeated devouring replaces its original wood and life attributes with darkness and evil, apparently irreversibly 347.
- Early weaknesses: Before its later transformations, it is vulnerable to fire and sharp weapons 137 148.
Devouring Golden Threads
An ability granted by his seventh Soul Ring that converts Blue Silver Grass into threads capable of absorbing surrounding creatures’ life force 271.
- Accelerates cultivation and later helps heal serious injuries 346 367.
- Eventually absorbs energy directly from Soul Rings and Soul Bones through the Martial Soul as an external medium 388.
- Carries traces of victims’ souls into his body, corrupting his bloodline and worsening instability, bloodlust, and madness 271 347.
- Becomes less effective for advancement at high Titled Douluo levels; ordinary devouring cannot easily overcome the barrier to level 99 348.
Clear Sky Hammer
His second Martial Soul is reserved for later cultivation so that its rings can be older and more powerful. Tang Hao also warns that cultivating both Martial Souls improperly can cause mutual rejection and bodily explosion 145.
- Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer: A cumulative hammer technique; progresses from fifty-four strikes during the tournament to the complete eighty-one-strike sequence 148 198.
- Clear Sky Nine Absolutes: Clear Sky Sect techniques in which he becomes highly proficient 356.
- Ring Detonation: Sacrifices ring power for an explosive increase in attack strength; he ultimately detonates all ten hammer rings during his divine battle 348 399.
- Kill Character Art: An all-out attack empowered by Divine Power during his fight with Yang Podi 399.
- Late-stage properties: Weighs tens of thousands of jin and gains a darkness attribute 356.
Tang Sect Secret Arts
The Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record contains six principal martial arts 150.
| Technique | Function and demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Mysterious Heaven Skill | Internal cultivation method; Tang San repeatedly relies on its supposed profundity to justify his confidence in controlling devoured energy 150 271 384. |
| Mysterious Jade Hand | Hand-training method displayed against Zhao Wuji 113 150. |
| Purple Demon Eye | Eye-training method that develops spiritual power 150 271. |
| Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon | Grappling technique used in combat against Zhao Wuji and Yang Ping’an 113 148 150. |
| Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track | Movement technique; gives him a slight speed advantage even against Soul King Yang Ping’an 148 150. |
| Hundred Solutions of Hidden Weapon | Hidden-weapon method; his unpredictable attacks affect even the Soul Saint Zhao Wuji 113 150. |
Poison, Craftsmanship, and Concealment
- Poison expertise: Deep knowledge of poisons complements his Blue Silver Grass cultivation 198.
- Hidden-weapon engineering: Designs and assembles weapons, supplies blueprints, and readily identifies the principles and defensive advantages of unfamiliar crossbow equipment 123 129 227.
- Infiltration: Uses experience from both lives to conceal himself. At Mount Aermo, he temporarily hides in snow while appearing to be a stalk of Blue Silver Grass 228.
