Background / History

Origins and Rise

The Black Emperor originally grew in the Desolate Ash Sea, absorbing its violent energy while being harvested as a Divine Medicine of Immortality. He escaped during an internal battle among its Supremes. Despite this treatment, he later said he bore no particular hatred over being harvested, regarding it as the ordinary fate of a captured divine medicine 30.

While wandering, he absorbed Heaven and Earth purple Qi in an exceptionally blessed location. He knew it greatly benefited his growth but could not determine how much it contributed to his awakening of sentience 35.

On the Ancient Starry Sky Road, he defeated cultivators who subsequently became his followers. By his imperial ascension, these included pinnacle Great Sages and numerous Quasi-Emperors. After attaining the Dao, he ordered them to establish the Black Realm 14.

The Immortal Lotus Banquet

The Black Emperor held an Immortal Lotus Banquet, offering demidivine lotus seeds and a Dao discourse to powerful cultivators and visiting prodigies. Lu Qingyun attended in disguise, studied his Dao, and provoked him by asking whether the seeds were his offspring 15 16.

When the disguised Lu Qingyun asserted that a Great Accomplishment Sacred Body could stand alongside a Great Emperor, the Black Emperor initially intended to confront Ye Mingyuan. Lu Qingyun instead revealed an unfamiliar Great Accomplishment Sacred Body and challenged him personally 16 17.

At the universe’s frontier, Lu Qingyun exploited his superior understanding of the Black Emperor’s own Dao, broke his defenses, and wounded him. He then trapped the emperor in an imperial array and stole his lotus dais. Humiliated, the Black Emperor returned home and sealed the Black Realm 17.

Rivalry with Ye Mingyuan

After this defeat, the Black Emperor became more restrained, emerging chiefly to patrol the universe and intimidate the forbidden zones. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed his ambition to suppress all rivals rather than accept inferiority 18 20.

He resented Ye Mingyuan’s attempt to attain the Dao while another Great Emperor still reigned, considering it a challenge to his standing. Yet he did not obstruct Ye Mingyuan’s successful tribulation and had previously helped treat his injuries. Ye Mingyuan thanked him for both before their imperial duel 23 28.

The Black Emperor won their battle, overturning public expectations that the newly ascended Sacred Body Emperor would prevail. News of his origins as an awakened Divine Medicine of Immortality subsequently spread throughout the universe 29.

Campaigns Against the Forbidden Zones

In Year 21,000, the Black Emperor announced his intention to wage war on the forbidden zones and seek peace for future generations. His first target was the Desolate Ash Sea, where he threatened its foundations until the False Immortal emerged. He killed this ancient human emperor and removed the corpse so the remaining Supremes could not consume it 29 30 31.

Ye Mingyuan followed him into battle, beginning their partnership against the forbidden zones. A thousand years later, their campaign against Chaotic God Mountain prompted Lu Qingyun to intervene. Rather than retreat, both emperors challenged him at the universe’s frontier 31 32 33.

Lu Qingyun defeated them with three punches in total, shattering the Black Emperor’s weapon and body before gravely injuring Ye Mingyuan. The Black Emperor escaped with his wounded ally 33.

In Year 26,000, both returned to the campaign despite the possibility of another intervention. At the Desolate Ash Sea, they divided seven Supremes between them: Ye Mingyuan fought four, while the Black Emperor faced three. All seven were executed, and Lu Qingyun did not interfere 34 35 36.

Final Years and Passing

The Black Emperor continued his raids even as Ye Mingyuan devoted more time to cultivation. By Year 30,000, his declining vitality had become noticeable. He accepted their different priorities without demanding that Ye Mingyuan follow his example 37.

Recognizing his approaching death, he became more provocative. He killed a Golden-Winged Emperor Peng in the Kunlun Divine Ruins and roasted its corpse at the entrance. Over the next two thousand years, he repeatedly entered forbidden zones to kill individual Supremes, avoiding the prolonged multi-opponent battles of his prime 38.

He asked Ye Mingyuan to protect his final days so that the Supremes could not seize his flesh, blood, and Dao fruit. In Year 34,000, shortly after another raid, his imperial presence faded. Ye Mingyuan witnessed him transform into an illusory black lotus and disappear into the void, suggesting nirvana rather than complete annihilation 38.

Posthumous Battle Intent

The Black Emperor left behind a condensed strand of battle intent intended to suppress future Dark Turmoil. When nine Supremes attacked the aging Ye Mingyuan, this remnant emerged from the Black Realm wielding his incomplete black lotus Emperor Weapon and fought beside his former ally 40.

This was not a confirmed resurrection. The remnant exhausted its strength against the nine Supremes and could not continue against the newly ascended Holy Spirit sovereign 40 41.

Appearance

  • Human form: A handsome, black-haired young man with an upright bearing and exceptionally robust physique 14 16.
  • Eyes: Carried the weight of great age despite his youthful appearance; his gaze was described as lightning-like 14 16.
  • Imperial presence: His overflowing blood Qi and imperial pressure made ordinary cultivators unable to look directly at him 14 16.
  • Original form: A black lotus, reflected in his domain, techniques, and Emperor Weapon 14 29 31.
  • In old age: His face remained unchanged even as his vitality declined 38.

Personality

Initially intensely proud of his origins, the Black Emperor proclaimed that his Dao surpassed those of ancient sovereigns and Great Emperors. He dismissed Ye Mingyuan as unworthy of discussing the imperial Dao and regarded Lu Qingyun as the more suitable counterpart. Challenges to his superiority could quickly provoke his temper 14 16.

His first defeat made him more restrained, but not passive. He deliberately rebuilt his resolve rather than surrender his ambition to stronger contemporaries 18 20.

His later priorities centered on fulfilling his promise to fight the forbidden zones. He accepted that he could not destroy them all at once and instead eliminated Supremes incrementally. He ultimately valued a clear conscience above either personal safety or an all-consuming pursuit of immortality 31 34 36.

He accepted aging without despair and retained a blunt, teasing manner with Ye Mingyuan. Even while requesting protection, he joked that the time lost from Ye Mingyuan’s cultivation would make little difference 38.

Abilities & Skills

Divine Medicine Constitution

His foundation as an awakened Divine Medicine of Immortality granted exceptional physical strength and longevity 14 29 37.

  • Slightly surpassed the newly ascended Ye Mingyuan in a direct contest of physical strength 29.
  • Rapidly healed a hole punched through his chest 17.
  • Remained alive beyond the ordinary lifespan of an emperor without obtaining another Divine Medicine of Immortality 37.
  • Still suffered aging, declining vitality, and accumulated damage from repeated imperial battles 38.
  • Possibly returned toward a medicinal form through nirvana after his passing; this remained Ye Mingyuan’s interpretation 38.

Imperial Dao and Heavenly Heart Imprint

As the reigning Great Emperor, he controlled the Heavenly Heart Imprint and projected imperial pressure throughout the cosmos 16 20.

  • Drew endless essence and starlight into himself to produce divine power 14.
  • Used a trace of imperial pressure to pin the banquet guests to the ground 16.
  • Later released the Heavenly Heart Imprint, allowing Ye Mingyuan to comprehend it and improve his cultivation 29 32.
  • Understood the limits of Divine Medicine of Immortality well enough to recognize that Ye Mingyuan’s restored cultivation required another, heaven-defying method 27.

Black Lotus Techniques

His combat techniques manifested the destructive and defensive properties of a black lotus 17 29.

  • Lotus barrier: His dais generated a pitch-black protective barrier. Lu Qingyun broke it by exploiting his deeper comprehension of the underlying Dao 17.
  • World-destroying lotus: Condensed destructive power into a blooming black lotus that repeatedly tore apart Ye Mingyuan’s body 29.
  • Forced emergence: Compelled attacking Supremes to leave their Immortal Sources 35.
  • Forbidden-zone disruption: Attempted to erase the Desolate Ash Sea’s internal laws and undermine its foundations 31.

Black Realm

The Black Realm’s enormous lotus form gathered essence from surrounding star domains, creating a cultivation sanctuary 14.

  • Contained a pool of Divine Source Liquid with dragonfish breathing auspicious Qi 14.
  • Resonated with the Black Emperor and supplied immortal-resonance Qi during his cultivation 20.
  • Contracted after his passing and unfurled again when his stored battle intent awakened 40.

Preserved Battle Intent

He condensed a combat remnant capable of wielding his Emperor Weapon after his passing 40.

  • Intended as a safeguard against future Dark Turmoil 40.
  • Retained enough power to fight alongside Ye Mingyuan against nine Supremes 40.
  • Had finite strength and was exhausted by that battle 41.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black lotus Emperor Weapon — Refined from his original body. It could lift layers of the void and attempt to banish an opponent into the eternal void. Lu Qingyun shattered it; it later appeared partially restored, with a fragment apparently deliberately left missing 31 33 40.
  • Black lotus dais — Produced a defensive barrier. Lu Qingyun believed it had been refined from part of the Black Emperor’s original medicinal body and stole it for study 17.
  • Demidivine lotus seeds — Distributed at the Immortal Lotus Banquet to benefit cultivation. A lotus seed also helped Ye Mingyuan recover after battling Supremes 15 16 36.
  • Purple-Qi bell — Seized from a Supreme and suppressed in his Sea of Bitterness. Its Heaven and Earth purple Qi was particularly nourishing to his medicinal constitution 35.

Relationships

  • Ye Mingyuan — Rival turned trusted comrade. The Black Emperor helped treat his injuries, defeated him in an imperial duel, and later campaigned beside him. Ye Mingyuan protected his passing and ultimately fought alongside his preserved battle intent 28 29 30 38 40.
  • Lu Qingyun — A desired Dao-discussion counterpart who became his overwhelming opponent. Lu Qingyun defeated him while disguised as a Sacred Body, stole his dais, and later crushed him alongside Ye Mingyuan. The Black Emperor did not recognize the disguised fighter as Lu Qingyun during their first encounter 14 17 20 33.
  • Black Realm followers — Former opponents subdued on the Ancient Starry Sky Road. Their descendants later served him and unsuccessfully urged him not to resume his dangerous campaigns 14 34.
  • Desolate Ash Sea Supremes — Former captors who harvested him in his medicinal form; later targets of his campaigns 30 35.
  • False Immortal — Ancient human emperor killed during his first forbidden-zone campaign 31.
