Appearance
- Round face, noted at her first appearance 3.
- Blue-green sect robes, worn while participating in the courtyard ambush against the moth demons 16.
Personality
Jiang Tingxue is outspoken, curious, and quick to argue, especially with Song Wensheng. Their rivalry began on their first day in the sect: because they entered under the same master on the same day, each insists on being the senior disciple. Even during combat, she refuses to acknowledge his claim to seniority 3 7.
Despite her sharp tongue, she is attentive to others’ feelings. She stops Song Wensheng from speaking carelessly about Zhu Lianqing’s death in front of Xie Lingchuan and later checks him for embarrassing their traveling companion. She also comforts A Man when discussion of Wuxia Village brings back her grief 3 9 26.
Her understanding of righteous cultivation is initially idealistic. Wuxia Village’s hostility confuses her because she expects mortals to welcome demon slayers. Nevertheless, she immediately affirms that she would still eliminate the demons even if the villagers drove her away, and accepts the lesson that her duty should not depend on gratitude 11.
She is deeply attached to her master and fellow disciples. Particularly doted on within her generation, she becomes homesick after little more than a month away. Her protectiveness is equally evident when she defends Yan Qing in battle and insists on carrying the unconscious Shen Ji safely down the mountain 14 40 43.
Jiang Tingxue says she has no romantic interest in anyone. She considers romance between masters and disciples a betrayal of proper relationships, and finds the idea of falling for her eldest senior brother absurd. Although fascinated by Mingzhu’s wedding, she rejects marriage for herself before finding her bonded sword 37 38 46.
Background / History
Training Journey and Wuxia Village
Jiang Tingxue travels with Shen Ji, Song Wensheng, Yan Qing, and Xie Lingchuan. At a restaurant, she notices Xie watching the veiled cultivator who has wagered on him and starts speculating about the stranger’s confidence in his abilities. The stranger is Zhu Lianqing, concealing her identity 3.
At Wuxia Village, Jiang fights the moth demons but is distressed by the discovery of a mutilated victim. She subsequently introduces herself to Zhu, who is using the name Wang Xianren. When the villagers resist the cultivators’ presence, Zhu helps Jiang distinguish her responsibility to slay demons from any expectation of mortal gratitude 7 9 11.
After learning that the villagers poisoned their sweet soup, Jiang participates in the planned ambush, throwing a fire talisman into the courtyard alongside Shen Ji 16.
White Bone Cavern
Inside White Bone Cavern, Jiang, Song Wensheng, and Yan Qing are left guarding the villagers. When an illusion draws the villagers toward a cliff, she attempts to stop them with immobilization-acupoint strikes. The technique fails, and they pull her over the edge. Song and Yan catch her, but invisible hands begin dragging her downward; Shen Ji’s sword disperses the hands and provides a foothold 21 22.
Shen Ji reminds the juniors that they have not learned sword flight and must not risk themselves near such drops. Jiang then follows him into the moth demon’s lair, where the creature’s hypnotic patterns and fragrance overwhelm the group until Xie Lingchuan joins the fight 22.
Afterward, she excitedly asks whether the sect issues Demon-Detecting Needles, only to learn that the device was made by the deceased Martial Aunt Zhu. She falls silent and checks Xie’s reaction 23.
Northern Journey and the Liu Residence
Following the Wuxia Village investigation, the group travels north for months, dealing with supernatural threats along the way. On reaching Falling Snow City, Jiang heads out shopping with Song Wensheng and Yan Qing 26.
At the Liu residence, she befriends Mingzhu, who is also fifteen. Their conversation exposes the difference between Mingzhu’s storybook expectations of cultivator romance and Jiang’s strict understanding of sect relationships 37 38.
During the mountain expedition near Pingjiang City, Jiang mistakes a giant spider’s leg for bamboo and narrowly escapes its web with Shen Ji’s help. In the subsequent Thousand Vines battle, she evades attacks by sound, protects Yan Qing, and joins the assault on the demon’s cores 39 40.
After Zhu rescues Xie Lingchuan from the water, Jiang and the other juniors pull them ashore. Jiang then carries the unconscious Shen Ji along the difficult mountain paths, handing him over to Song Wensheng only after they reach level ground 43 44.
Mingzhu’s Rescue
Jiang attends Mingzhu’s wedding—the first wedding she has ever witnessed—and joins the other juniors in barring the bridegroom’s way. She later interrupts Zhu and Xie standing alone together, innocently questioning why they are so close 46.
When Mingzhu is taken into Pingjiang City, Jiang insists on joining the rescue. Unable to fly on her own sword, she travels with Zhu, who uses Jiang’s weapon to carry them both 48.
Within the city, she spots the red lanterns that lead the group toward the ghostly wedding. After Shen Ji, Zhu, and Xie are taken away by ghost matchmakers, Jiang creates a disturbance to attract a matchmaker herself, allowing the remaining juniors to follow them into the trap 49 50.
