Background / History

Original Fate

In the original plot shown to Zhu Lianqing, Xie Lingchuan’s master coveted his spiritual root and subjected him to prolonged abuse and manipulation. At sixteen, he was persuaded to enter a sword-tempering pool as a sacrifice to his master’s sword. He understood that the pool meant death, but still asked whether he would survive, clinging to a final hope that his master might show kindness 1 27.

On the brink of death, he awakened his demonic bones, slaughtered his way through the cultivation world, and ultimately slit his own throat on the ruins of his destroyed sect. This was the fate Zhu Lianqing’s “Yandere Disciple Rescue Plan” mission sought to prevent, not the outcome of the changed storyline 1.

Life on Evergreen Peak

Zhu Lianqing took Xie Lingchuan as her only disciple and changed his course. Under her guidance, he avoided becoming a sword sacrifice at sixteen and instead developed into a promising young sword cultivator. His exceptional talent had attracted competing recruitment offers from multiple sects 1 2 3.

The pair lived together on Evergreen Peak. He was diligent and respectful but deeply reserved. When Zhu Lianqing tried to encourage him to make friends at another sect’s gathering, he confronted her about whether she found his quiet disposition tiresome. She apologized and stopped trying to change that part of him 1.

Zhu Lianqing’s apparent death left him without his master at seventeen. He carried her Autumn Water Sword beside her coffin without publicly shedding tears, encouraging the impression that he felt little grief. Two years later, his private behavior revealed that this composure concealed profound distress 1 3 14 44 45.

Wuxia Village and White Bone Cavern

During his first journey down the mountain, Xie Lingchuan helped protect Wuxia Village from moth demons. He instructed the juniors in how to fight them, maintained the village’s defenses with Shen Ji, and respectfully preserved Wei Mingchi’s body. Zhu Lianqing, traveling under the identity Wang Xianren, secretly freed him when the moth demon leader trapped him 7.

He later stopped Song Wensheng from drinking poisoned sugar water and helped Shen Ji break the Soul-Seizing Formation at White Bone Cavern. Inside, he used the Demon-Detecting Needle to systematically search the ghoul-filled chambers 15 18 19.

His relationship with Wang Xianren became strained when she argued that all yao and demons should be killed regardless of their conduct. Although he later suspected her of being a demon when the needle pointed toward her, he refused to execute her without investigation, citing his master’s teachings 20 23 24.

After Shen Ji pierced the moth yaoguai’s wing, Xie Lingchuan beheaded it. He subsequently established a Spirit Connection Spell with Wang Xianren, though he needed her help to complete its incantation 23 25.

Wang Xianren’s Escape

Xie Lingchuan accompanied Wang Xianren through town, bought her a fox-shaped jade pendant, and later retrieved her from a pleasure house using their Spirit Connection Spell. While helping her return to the inn, he also planted a gu that provided another means of finding her 28 30 36.

At Falling Snow Mountain, he vouched for A Man’s character and secured her acceptance by Seven Splendors Mountain. Wang Xianren used the distraction to break their Spirit Connection Spell and escape. His hidden tracking measure allowed him to locate her again, after which he watched her more closely and requested adjoining rooms 34 35 36 37.

Thousand Vines and the Inner Demon Illusion

While fighting Thousand Vines, Xie Lingchuan shielded the group from a barrage of leaves with a rapidly formed defensive formation. He then entered the pool, used a blood talisman to force the yaoguai out, and guarded the underwater fire formation 40.

Yesheng’s fragrance rendered him unconscious and trapped him in an inner demon illusion. Zhu Lianqing entered it through their joined divine senses. There, she witnessed an unusually cheerful young Xie Lingchuan with his master, followed by a vision of her violent death. His grief became so overwhelming that he wept blood and the illusion approached collapse 41 42 43.

Zhu Lianqing brought him out but collapsed from her own injuries. He carried her to safety, examined her meridians, and transferred spiritual energy to her. Her ability to rescue him despite her apparently low cultivation strengthened his suspicion that she was concealing her true power 43 44.

Pingjiang City

When a ghost abducted Liu Mingzhu into sealed Pingjiang City, Xie Lingchuan joined the rescue party. Before entering, he cast Live and Die Together on Wang Xianren so that he could share her injuries, telling her that he wanted to protect her despite knowing she was powerful 48.

Inside the city, he identified ghost matchmakers that hijacked wedding parties. After Shen Ji and Wang Xianren were taken into the He family courtyard, he deliberately attracted a matchmaker’s attention and instructed the juniors to follow the same route 50.

Appearance

  • Height and build: A head taller than Zhu Lianqing’s reconstructed body by nineteen; described as tall and sturdy, with firm muscles and long, straight legs 3 30 31.
  • Face: Refined, noble features whose youthful innocence has given way to greater maturity 10 34.
  • Eyes and hair: Dark eyes and long black hair, ordinarily secured with a ribbon 13 40 41.
  • Clothing: Usually wears the sect’s emerald-green disciple uniform; later changes into black clothing that emphasizes his slender figure and aloof bearing 31.

Personality

Xie Lingchuan is quiet, diligent, and protective of his personal boundaries. His dislike of conversation is longstanding rather than a temporary response to grief. Although rumors portray him as icy and unapproachable, Shen Ji finds him more tolerant of the juniors’ squabbling than expected. He expresses care through practical actions, including keeping watch while others sleep and distributing the best fruit to his companions while retaining the smallest, unripe piece for himself 1 3 9 10.

His restraint does not prevent compassion or moral independence. He treats the dead respectfully and rejects the idea that demons deserve death merely for existing. He is also observant and suspicious, noticing inconsistencies in Wang Xianren’s explanations and privately questioning whether Shen Ji deliberately allowed the villagers to fall under an illusion 7 8 20 24 25.

His attachment to Zhu Lianqing is far more intense than his public manner suggests. He reverently cleans her portrait, privately resents reminders that other disciples still have living masters, and refuses to expose secrets he regards as shameful. After denying that he cried for her, he breaks down alone in the darkness 38 44 45.

Connection and Tracking Techniques

He uses magical connections to locate companions and prevent Wang Xianren from disappearing 25 35 36.

  • Spirit Connection Spell: Establishes a connection that guides him to Wang Xianren’s location. He initially forgets part of its incantation and requires her instruction 25 30.

  • Examines spiritual meridians and transfers spiritual energy to an injured person 44.
  • Uses a pressure-point strike to make the drunken Zhu Lianqing more alert 30.

Limitations

  • His command of incantations is less reliable than his swordsmanship; even a repeatedly taught Spirit Connection Spell requires assistance 25.
  • Yesheng’s fragrance overwhelms him despite his late Golden Core cultivation 41 44.
  • Grief for his master leaves him vulnerable to an inner demon illusion that nearly traps both him and Zhu Lianqing 42 43.
  • He has not yet determined his own Dao 13.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black iron sword — His regular weapon. Its material is reasonably good, but it has no grade bonuses or sword spirit. He continues using it because he is accustomed to it, despite Zhu Lianqing having previously given him at least three high-grade weapons 20.
  • Green jade ring on a red cord — Hangs from his sword hilt and functions as portable storage 19.
  • Demon-Detecting Needle — A compass-like device invented by Zhu Lianqing that points toward demonic energy. He uses it to search White Bone Cavern; its fixation on Wang Xianren becomes grounds for investigating her identity 19 23 24.

Relationships

  • Zhu Lianqing / Perfected Lord Nanhua — Master and the central figure in his emotional life. He calls her better than anyone he has met, yet also considers her detached from worldly romance. Her apparent death remains the source of his concealed grief 11 13 42 44.
  • Wang Xianren — Zhu Lianqing’s concealed identity. He treats her as a suspicious senior cultivator, repeatedly prevents her escape, and nevertheless cares for her injuries and binds himself to her to offer protection. Her true identity has not been openly acknowledged in the supplied chapters 24 36 44 48.
  • Shen Ji — Fellow disciple and frequent combat partner. Their coordination is effective, but Xie Lingchuan privately suspects that Shen Ji’s benevolent reputation conceals a less merciful nature 18 23 25 40.
  • Jiang Tingxue, Song Wensheng, and Yan Qing — Younger sect companions whom he protects, instructs, and helps lead during their training journey 7 10 48 50.
  • A Man — A survivor who travels with the group. His testimony about her character secures her acceptance by Seven Splendors Mountain 34.
