Background / History
Childhood and Journey with Wei Mingchi
A Man and Wei Mingchi grew up together. Their elders died one after another, leaving her increasingly afraid of losing the people she loved. Others had called her a “baleful star” and blamed her for her parents’ deaths, but Mingchi refused to believe them 5 6 12.
The two traveled toward Falling Snow City in the Northern Territory to see Falling Mountain Snow. After nearly losing their way, they encountered Zhu Lianqing and Sister-in-law Little Liu, who directed them to Wuxia Village for shelter. Exhaustion and A Man’s insecurity contributed to repeated arguments with Mingchi 5 6.
Wuxia Village Attack
A corpse-eating demon and a poisonous moth demon attacked during their stay. Mingchi died protecting A Man. Although she was covered in blood, she had no physical wounds; moth-wing poison and extreme fright left her unconscious, and Shen Ji treated her with a medicinal pill 6 8.
Upon waking, A Man begged the cultivators to save Mingchi. Learning that he was dead, she blamed herself and attempted to kill herself by throwing herself against a wall. Zhu Lianqing caught her and challenged her belief that she deserved to die, emphasizing that Mingchi had sacrificed himself because he cherished her. Zhu Lianqing also told her that he had intended to return home and ask for her hand after their journey 12.
A Man chose to live and asked to help avenge him. She agreed to a plan that used his cremation fire to lure the moth demons into an array, provided his remains would be protected. The following day, she insisted on seeing his mangled body; afterward, she no longer spoke of taking her own life 12 14.
When the villagers disrupted the cremation, A Man tried to rush forward to protect Mingchi’s body, but Zhu Lianqing reassured her that Xie Lingchuan’s formation would keep it safe. After the villagers’ complicity in the travelers’ deaths was exposed, A Man rejected Liu Er’s apology: neither remorse nor revenge could bring Mingchi back 16 17.
Completing Their Journey
A Man remained behind a barricaded gate while the cultivators pursued the demons to White Bone Cavern. Some villagers brought her food and apologized, and she was relieved when the group returned safely 25 26.
She decided to continue north to see the flowers despite Mingchi’s death. Zhu Lianqing and the disciples invited her to accompany them, offering protection along the way. At Falling Snow City, she initially proposed finding separate lodging because she could not afford their inn, but the group assured her that she need not pay 26 28.
At Falling Snow Mountain, A Man knelt beneath the spirit tree to fulfill the wish she and Mingchi had been unable to complete together. Watching the blossoms fall, she spoke to him about their beauty 33.
Joining Seven Splendors Mountain
A Man admired Seven Splendors Mountain’s female disciples for establishing themselves in the cultivation world. Although she doubted her aptitude and felt ashamed of aspiring to cultivation while destitute, Zhu Lianqing encouraged her to ask about admission rather than leave herself with regrets 32 33.
The sect’s disciple found that A Man possessed mixed spiritual roots, the least suitable kind for cultivation. However, Seven Splendors Mountain’s spellcasting lineage placed relatively little importance on spiritual roots, making a few techniques attainable through diligence. A Man accepted that limitation: she wanted enough strength to defend herself and perhaps help someone weaker 34.
Xie Lingchuan vouched for her character, securing her acceptance. She departed with the sect’s disciples, disappointed that Zhu Lianqing had already left before she could offer a proper farewell and thank her 34 35.
Personality
A Man was once gentle, but successive bereavements made her sensitive and afraid of abandonment. According to Wei Mingchi, her temper arose from the fear that he, too, would leave her. He understood that she did not mean her hurtful outbursts, though their arguments still wounded them both 6.
She longs for close, dependable relationships. Watching Shen Ji’s affectionate interactions with his fellow disciples makes her envy their family-like bond. Nevertheless, she distinguishes genuine affection from cruelty, explaining that she expects kindness only from people who truly love her rather than hoping malicious people will change 27.
Her desire to cultivate is practical and compassionate rather than ambitious. She is willing to work for only a few useful techniques if they might protect her or help another vulnerable person 34.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation Aptitude
- Mixed spiritual roots: Her roots severely restrict her cultivation potential 34.
- Limited spellcasting prospects: Seven Splendors Mountain considers her capable of learning a move or two through diligent effort, despite her lack of talent 34.
- Untrained in the documented appearances: Her acceptance into the sect does not establish that she has learned or used any spells 34 35.
Equipment / Items
- Intricate die pendant — A cube-shaped pendant with holes on all six faces and a red bean inside. A Man intends to place Mingchi’s ashes alongside the bean, seal the holes, and keep the pendant with her 12.
Relationships
- Wei Mingchi — Childhood companion and romantic partner who dies protecting her. Their marital status is described inconsistently: he initially says they were already married, while Zhu Lianqing later tells A Man that he planned to return home and ask for her hand 5 12.
- Zhu Lianqing / Wang Xianren — Saves her from suicide, helps her confront her grief, and encourages her to seek admission to Seven Splendors Mountain. A Man regards her as exceptionally understanding and credits her encouragement with making that opportunity possible 12 33 35.
- Xie Lingchuan — Preserves Mingchi’s body, safeguards it during the cremation trap, helps cover the group’s travel expenses, and vouches for A Man’s character when she seeks sect admission 12 16 28 34.
- Shen Ji — Treats her poisoning, comforts her after she wakes, and offers assistance with Mingchi’s funeral arrangements 8 12.
- Liu Er — One of the villagers implicated in the travelers’ deaths. A Man refuses his plea for forgiveness 17.
- Seven Splendors Mountain disciples — Assess her spiritual roots, offer her limited but attainable training, and escort her to their sect after accepting her 34 35.
