Background / History

Previous Life and Hidden Parentage

Yu Tianshuang retains memories and cultivation methods from a previous life in the Cold Jade Ice Heart Pavilion. Its heaven-grade Ice Heaven Sword Scripture gives him a foundation for cultivation and combat, but he initially lacks knowledge of Douluo Continent’s Martial Souls and Soul Rings 2 4 11.

His parents, Yu Xiaoruan and Jian Suxin, entrusted him to Grandpa Wang before disappearing. After his Martial Soul awakening, Grandpa reveals his true surname, his descent from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and his mother’s position as the Slaughter Sect’s inheritor. Both of his Martial Souls are identified as beneficial mutations of his parents’ respective inheritances 3 18.

Rather than join Spirit Hall or immediately seek protection from either side of his family, Tianshuang chooses to grow stronger independently. He initially plans to attend Blue Tyrant Academy, while affirming that the man who raised him will always remain his grandfather 3 4.

Joining Skywater Academy

While seeking a first Soul Ring, Tianshuang nearly dies fighting an Ice Jade Scorpion. His Chief Disciple Purple Seal breaks the ice imprisoning him and blocks the scorpion’s pincers, allowing him to kill it. Shui Xinrou then teaches him how to absorb its ring and guards him through the process 6 7.

Shui Xinrou offers him admission to Skywater Academy despite its usual prohibition on male students and accepts him as her disciple. As the academy’s first male student, he receives a private room in a vacant instructors’ dormitory. He later joins its reserve team in preparation for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Elite Tournament 8 11 13.

Investigating His Parents

Shui Xinrou identifies his parents as Yu Xiaoruan and Jian Suxin and explains that Yu Luomian expelled his father from the clan after their disappearance. She also tells him that Sword Chen Xin confronted Spirit Hall and was injured by Qian Daoliu before escaping with Gu Rong’s help 18.

At the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, Tianshuang reunites with his maternal grandfather, Sword Chen Xin. He learns that his parents vanished after taking him to the Nine Heavens Rainbow Wind Clan, which Spirit Hall subsequently destroyed. Madam Ye gives him a Nine Heart Begonia pendant associated with the successors of the Undying Sect and Slaughter Sect 22.

After Tianshuang treats Dugu Bo’s poison, Dugu Bo agrees to investigate in Spirit City. He returns with information identifying Qian Xunji as the mastermind behind the earlier attack on the Lower Three Sects, but cannot confirm whether Tianshuang’s parents remain alive 24 27 28.

Arena Battles and Departure from Shrek

Under the name Frost Sword, Tianshuang enters the Heaven Dou Imperial City Great Soul Arena to gain practical combat experience. He wins thirty consecutive matches over six months, then defeats Huyan Qiang in a match contested for a historic Purple Gold Soul Fighting Medal 28 29.

During a later journey, he rescues Zhu Zhuqing from armed pursuers, treats her wounds, and accompanies her to Shrek Academy. He defeats Dai Mubai with one sword strike and enrolls as an auditing student 31 32 33.

His test against Zhao Wuji ends after Zhao continues fighting beyond the intended limit and injures him with his Fifth Soul Skill. Although declared qualified, Tianshuang leaves with Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing. Tang San and Xiao Wu remain, and Tianshuang invites them to seek him at Skywater Academy if they reconsider 35.

Dragon Transformation Training and Clan Rejection

After obtaining his third Soul Ring, Tianshuang distributes Immortal Herbs among his Skywater companions. Shui Bing’er then introduces him to Liu Erlong, who recognizes him as her nephew and teaches him the cultivation methods needed to awaken Dragon Transformation Soul Skills 41 42 43 44.

His training develops a close-combat style built around his two dragon claws and three ring skills. In battle against the Heaven Dou Royal Academy Team, he freezes its defensive fighters and overpowers Yu Tianheng in direct clashes 44 47 48.

Yu Tianheng subsequently identifies himself as Tianshuang’s older cousin and invites him back to the clan. Tianshuang refuses, condemning its abandonment of his parents and Yu Luomian’s failure to seek him out. He nevertheless accepts Yu Tianheng as a friend and renews his determination to uncover the full truth 50.

Appearance

• Face and bearing: Described as handsome, with a cold-looking expression and long, narrow eyes 23 33.
• Early clothing: Dresses plainly enough that classmates assume he is neither wealthy nor noble 12.

Personality

Tianshuang values care and loyalty over ancestry. He continues to regard Grandpa Wang as his real grandfather after learning that they are unrelated, and rejects the idea that his surname obliges him to return to a clan that abandoned his family 4 50.

He is candid with people who earn his trust. After Shui Xinrou protects him, he openly acknowledges his second Martial Soul rather than denying what she has witnessed. He is also willing to acknowledge mistakes, apologizing after leaving Meng Qu dangerously frozen during their duel 8 21 23.

His protectiveness can become anger when someone mistreats people close to him. He intervenes to save Zhu Zhuqing and sharply criticizes Yu Xiaogang for abandoning Liu Erlong at their wedding. His resentment toward Yu Luomian remains especially intense, though he recognizes that Yu Tianheng is not responsible for the older generation’s decisions 31 45 50.

Despite his formidable combat confidence, he is easily flustered by affection. His exchanges with Shui Yue’er and Shui Bing’er reveal a shy side that contrasts with his cold arena persona 38 39 42 50.
