Geography and Strategic Position
- Mountain frontier: Although designated a frontier city, Sunset City initially bordered no foreign country directly. Its inhabitants had grown accustomed to peace and regarded war as unlikely 8.
- Natural defenses: The Endless Mountains obstruct the movement of large armies, equipment, and supplies. Their vast terrain and roaming savage beasts provide an additional barrier 17.
- Connection to Wuling City: Xiao Changlin describes the two cities as facing one another across a river. Military officers place the journey between them at a little over half a month 21 23.
- Likely invasion route: Bai Yu’s officers expected the Wu Kingdom to attack Wuling City first, then advance toward Sunset City rather than march through the mountains 17 21.
- Nearby settlement: The rebuilt Hundred Stars Village, established on the abandoned Bright Virtue Academy grounds near Phoenix Cry Village, lies about half a day’s walk from Sunset City 10 22 39.
City Layout and Landmarks
| Location | Description |

| Walls and gates | Towering, exceptionally sturdy walls surround the city. Initially lax gate inspections became strict after Mo Cang disappeared; wartime defenses included bow-armed guards, frequent patrols, and torches along the walls 8 11 34 38. |
| Main streets and markets | Busy commercial streets accommodate merchants, vendors, food-and-drink sellers, and shoppers. Visitors remark on the wide, clean streets paved with bluestone bricks 8 23. |
| City lord’s manor | A lavish complex of dozens of Phoenix-nest red ebony buildings. Its grounds contain rare trees, gem-inlaid white jade paving, and roofs decorated with glazed tiles and gemstones. A hidden hall served as the meeting place for Mo Cang and the Wu envoy 8. |
| Bright Virtue Academy | Located in the western district after relocating from its former grounds near Phoenix Cry Village. Nearby shops display brushes, ink, paper, inkstones, and calligraphy 10 12. |
| City defense camp | West of the city lord’s residence; mainly houses troops dispatched from the national capital 23. |
| Three camps | East of the city lord’s residence; house locally recruited soldiers 23. |

History
Mo Cang’s Betrayal and the True Dragon’s Defeat
Sunset City’s apparent peace concealed corruption and foreign infiltration. Ma Yuan collected money from shops, using his patrol to block customers from businesses that refused to pay. Meanwhile, Mo Cang privately accepted the Wu Emperor’s offer of cultivation resources and handed over the city lord’s token 8.
The Wu envoy declared Sunset City subject to Wu jurisdiction and used the token to draw out its protective five-clawed golden true dragon. A Dragon-Trapping Formation restrained the dragon while the envoy summoned the Wu Kingdom’s purple true dragon. Residents knelt in worship at the spectacle, whereas cultivators recognized the danger and quietly fled 8.
The golden dragon insisted that the battle move outside the mortal city to avoid harming its people. There, the Core Formation envoy and purple dragon subdued it. The Qian Emperor sensed the loss of Sunset City’s true dragon power and immediately summoned his officials 8.
Disappearance of the City Lord
Mo Cang subsequently vanished, prompting strict inspections at the gates. Bai Yu arrived secretly to investigate the crisis and prepare the defenses. Reports that Wuling and Qixia had also lost their true dragon power confirmed that Sunset City’s troubles formed part of a wider threat to the Qian frontier 11 17.
Although Chen Haoran was assigned to seize Sunset City, the Wu campaign initially concentrated on Wuling and Qixia. Sunset City instead became a source of reinforcements for both fronts 14 21 30.
Resettlement of Hundred Stars Village
The elders of Hundred Stars Village traveled to Sunset City seeking permission to occupy the abandoned Bright Virtue Academy grounds. Gate personnel initially turned them away, but Chahar intervened after hearing the academy’s name 12.
Chahar brought them to Headmaster Song Yude, who approved using the old site as their new home. The commander also promised to arrange city registration and a public notice once the villagers arrived. A later supply trip brought Xiao Changlin’s party to the Ever-Normal Granary, where they renewed their acquaintance with him; soldiers subsequently escorted their grain, seeds, and other supplies back to the settlement 12 23 26.
Ye Fan’s Covert Visit
Ye Fan later surveyed Sunset City while concealed inside his Inner World. When he reached out near the city lord’s residence, Bai Yu detected an unusual energy fluctuation and appeared above the building. Ye Fan withdrew his presence and remained hidden until the commander left 34.
Ma Yuan’s Dismissal
After returning to a city post, Ma Yuan stopped Ye Fan’s group at the gate, scattered their medicinal herbs, and overturned a handcart. Bai Yu investigated the complaints, dismissed him, ordered the cargo put back in order, and apologized with a promise of compensation 50.
Commerce and Village Trade
- Regional transport work: Laborers from surrounding villages wait near the gates with wheelbarrows to carry goods for hire. Qi Dazhu of Heling Village works there throughout the year 38.
- Wartime herb demand: The war created a shortage of medicinal herbs. Ye Fan sold ten cartloads of high-quality herbs to Pharmacist Bai at Treasure Hall for 300 taels 38.
- Continuing supply agreement: Bai offered to fund expansion of Ye Fan’s herb production. Ye Fan agreed on the condition that Bai keep the source secret and never inquire about the garden’s location or workers 42.
- Bamboo wares: When the villagers’ baskets and hampers failed to sell at their roadside stall, Ye Fan arranged for Treasure Hall to buy the entire batch. The sale earned 20 taels and secured a substantial repeat order 41 42 43.
- Military purchasing: Guards from Sunset City’s grand governor’s residence bought medicinal herbs for the fighting at Wuling and Qixia 43.
