Geography and Strategic Importance
- Border approach: The road from Cloud Mountain Fortress to Wuling City passes through woods used by Qian hidden sentries and, later, Wu assault troops 27.
- Distance from Sunset City: A little over half a month’s journey. Xiao Changlin places Wuling north of Sunset City and states that the two cities face each other across a river 21 23.
- Invasion route: Qian commanders consider Wuling the most suitable breakthrough point among the three threatened frontier cities. Sunset City’s mountain approaches hinder large armies, while an advance through Qixia would stretch Wu supply and battle lines 21.
- Access to the heartland: Its fall could allow Wu forces to penetrate Qian territory and separate the kingdom’s northern and southern regions 21.
- Protection of Sunset City: Both Qian commanders and Ye Fan regard holding Wuling as essential to preventing the war from reaching Sunset City 44 47.

Defensive Methods
- Early warning: Hidden sentries monitor the fortress road; war drums and a beacon signal an attack once fighting reaches the walls 27 28.
- Wall defense: Soldiers use arrows, crossbow bolts, stones, logs, fire oil, and burning projectiles against attackers and scaling parties 28 31.
- Gate defense: Shield bearers, missile troops, and spearmen resist charges through the damaged entrance 29.
- Counter-bombardment tactics: During the prolonged siege, defenders take cover from catapults and return to their positions when the Wu infantry advances, refusing to be drawn into an open-field battle 44.

History
Loss of True Dragon Power
Wuling is one of three Qian frontier cities whose True Dragon Power is stolen by the Wu Kingdom. Its city lord is also beheaded. Exploiting the recent accession of the Qian emperor, the Wu emperor orders Yan Fengxiao to lead 200,000 troops against Wuling while separate armies target Qixia and Sunset City 14 17.
Wan Que initially handles the city’s affairs after the city lord’s loss. The imperial capital then sends Grand Governor Cao Zhouyuan to take charge. Anticipating an invasion, Qian authorities designate Wuling as the concentration point for reinforcements, and Bai Yu dispatches Qin Shan from Sunset City 21 27.
Surprise Night Attack
Wu Pojun’s Selected Vanguard eliminates the hidden sentries along the approach road, allowing the assault force to reach the woods outside Wuling without raising the alarm. He launches the attack during a change of the wall guards. Vanguard soldiers scale the walls with grappling hooks and attempt to reach the gate from inside 27 28.
Qian reinforcements kill the infiltrators, but the siege escalates as Wu troops bring up a battering ram and catapults. Bombardment breaches the walls and smashes a hole through the gate. Wan Que’s soldiers hold the entrance while Cao rallies reinforcements and restores order among fleeing civilians 28 29.
The overnight assault fails. Qian forces report approximately 7,000 casualties, most caused by catapults. Wu losses number several thousand, with the Battle Formation Breaching Battalion losing eight or nine out of every ten men. During the pause, the defenders repair the gate, work on the walls, and establish interior fallback positions 31.
Prolonged Siege and the Qixia Operation
Yan Fengxiao continues ordering attacks, and Wu troops enter Wuling several times only to be driven out. Meanwhile, Bai Yu and Commander Zha develop a plan to defeat Guo Youshan’s separate army at Qixia. Zha passes through Wuling, delivers Bai Yu’s letter to Cao, and departs with 50,000 troops; Cao remains responsible for keeping Yan occupied 30 32 36.
Despite Wu Pojun’s recommendation to request Chen Haoran’s reinforcements, Yan insists on continuing the assault independently. Wuling’s defenders maintain a defensive stalemate rather than answering Wu challenges to fight outside the walls 44.
Ye Fan’s Secret Assistance
After learning about the fighting, Ye Fan travels to Wuling concealed within his Inner World. He finds battered fortifications but confirms that Qian soldiers still hold the city. Concerned for the wounded, he secretly pours Spring of Life water into more than ten guarded wells before leaving 43 44 45.
Return of the Relief Army
Following the Qian victory at Qixia, Commander Zha and Qin Shan march back to Wuling. Yan temporarily leaves the front for Cloud Mountain Fortress after learning that fewer than a thousand men from Guo Youshan’s 200,000-strong army have returned 45 47.
Chen Haoran persuades Yan and Guo to unite their forces, offering to lead the vanguard against Wuling. As an additional 150,000 troops advance from the fortress, Wan Que estimates that the city will face more than 300,000 enemies. Cao orders stronger gate guards, deployment of the entire city defense battalion to the gates, and additional scouting parties 48 49.
