Background / History

Flender once traveled the Soul Master world as the Flying Corner of the renowned Golden Iron Triangle. After the group disbanded, age and an unhappy love life diminished his youthful fighting spirit 18 20.

He founded Shrek Academy with several old companions, seeking both a peaceful place to spend their later years and successors who could inherit their experience. As a commoner-born expert, he also wanted to help talented Soul Masters who lacked powerful families, resources, or guidance 12 20.

Flender named the academy after the rare Shrek Soul Beast and set out to cultivate “monster”-class talents capable of shaking the Soul Master world. He also hoped that teaching such students would preserve his own reputation and give his life lasting value through education 20 23 36.

He accepted Ma Hongjun as his final personal disciple, valuing the boy’s phoenix Martial Soul despite its dangerous mutation. To relieve Ma Hongjun’s Evil Fire, Flender regularly took him to brothels in Suotuo City 12 14.

Flender is crafty, miserly, and attentive to expenses. His refusal to spend on academy meals contributes to their poor quality, while his travel planning avoids the inflated prices of Soul Beast hunting towns. His frugality also fuels a long-running dispute with Zhao Wuji over unpaid wages 11 19 37.

His ambition to train famous students is tempered by genuine concern for their safety. Although Dai Mubai’s unprecedented Soul Rings promise prestige for Shrek Academy, Flender repeatedly hesitates before allowing dangerous absorption attempts. He accepts the risks only after hearing Dai Mubai’s reasoning and seeing evidence of his capabilities 20 24 29 30.

He values gratitude and loyalty alongside talent. Rather than merely seeking fame through Dai Mubai, he asks him to help Oscar and Ma Hongjun once he becomes successful, planning ahead for students who lack resources of their own 21.

Flender can also be petty and hold grudges. After overhearing Zhao Wuji mock him, he flies Dai Mubai home and leaves Zhao Wuji to arrange his own return. Beneath the bickering, the two remain old companions who have worked together for more than ten years 39.
