Background / History
Ma Hongjun comes from a commoner background and became Flender’s personal disciple before Dai Mubai enrolled at Shrek Academy. At the beginning of the story, he, Oscar, and Dai Mubai are the academy’s only three students, roughly two years before the expected arrival of Tang San’s group 1 12 21.
His incomplete Martial Soul mutation shapes his daily life. Flender regularly takes him to brothels in Suotuo City to relieve his Evil Fire, then brings him back early enough to continue his studies and cultivation. Despite these outings, Flender refuses to let him neglect either Martial Soul theory or training 14.
Dai Mubai’s Transformation
Ma Hongjun witnesses Dai Mubai reveal his level-30 cultivation and mutated Evil Eye White Tiger. He immediately asks his stronger roommate to look after him. The tiger’s new wings particularly affect him: although he possesses a phoenix Martial Soul, he cannot fly himself. His envy does not become resentment, and he remains genuinely happy for Dai Mubai 16 18.
After Dai Mubai returns from hunting Soul Rings, Ma Hongjun is astonished by his level-35 cultivation and purple-purple-black ring configuration. Their conversation turns toward Ma Hongjun’s own limitations, prompting Dai Mubai to explain possible treatments for his Evil Fire. Grateful for this guidance and the promise of further help, Ma Hongjun pledges to follow him 41 42 43.

Personality
Ma Hongjun is a show-off with a playful, shameless manner around his friends. He teases Dai Mubai about his unusual early rising and physically clings to him while asking for protection. Their roughhousing does not offend him; Dai Mubai’s playful kick accompanies an increase in his affection rather than anger 14 16.
Loyalty is one of his defining qualities. He sincerely recognizes Dai Mubai as his leader, celebrates his success despite envying his abilities, and offers Oscar help even when he does not know what useful assistance he can provide 18 43.
He has little ambition and would prefer to slack off, making Flender’s strict supervision important. However, his training difficulties are not simply laziness: circulating too much Soul Power worsens his Evil Fire. He also takes pride in being a Phoenix Soul Master, a pride Dai Mubai hopes to use as motivation 42 43.
